Watches are good at keeping time

Shot for the "Macro Madness" event on Facebook. Basically someone created an event where the focus for the week is macro type shots.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Bought this yesterday to help with a running training schedule.

It was nice to find that, in a world where opal fruits have been renamed and sherbert dippers now come in plastic pots, this watch is exactly as I remember it from 15-20 years ago: no cameras, wifi, gps - just a clock, an alarm and a stopwatch.

Classic! I can't think of a better way to spend £8.99 in Argos :-)

Apparently this is also the watch of choice for the modern terrorist. I probably just got myself onto some lists.

Description soon, or please comment!

For us, Amsterdam was about museums. And one of the great musuems of Europe is the Rijksmuseum - kinda the National Gallery of the Netherlands. And if you mention the words Dutch and Art in the same sentence, it often comes down to Mr. Rembrant van Rijn, or as we call him simply - Rembrandt.

There is a Hall of Honor on the top floor of the Rijks - and Rembrandt's most celebrated painting - titled long after it was done as Night Watch hangs there. (for much of its existence, the painting was coated with a dark varnish, which gave the impression that it depicted a night scene - leading to the name. The varnish was removed in the 1940s, 300 years after it was added. Thanks again Wikipedia.) Essentially a group photo - the title is officially "Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq", but it is a group photo of this Dutch militia company. But being Rembrandt - it's lit exquisitely; there's a reason we call it Rembrandt lighting in photography...

Unlike the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, there wasn't nearly the selfie hysteria for Night Watch - widely considered the most famous Dutch Golden Age painting (at least according to Wikipedia). But there was still a crowd around it at all times. There are actually quite a few paintings like this; could I have made a killing as a group portrait photographer in the 1640s? Well, only if I had Rembrandt light it all...

Night's Watch Oath

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all nights to come"

Juneteenth Parade & Celebration,

Evanston, Illinois, USA

Evanston, a suburb 12 miles north of Chicago, became the first American city to approve reparations to be paid to black residents which will include housing grants. On June 19, the city held its first in-person Juneteenth parade and celebration where local leaders, musicians, and residents participated.

Majestic theatre demolition on a walk around the city to see what is happening May 18, 2014 Christchurch New Zealand.

Opened on 1 March 1930, The Majestic Theatre was built for John Fuller & Sons. Billed as ‘The Showplace of Christchurch’, the Art Deco building contained three upper floors of offices, known as Majestic House. It is Christchurch’s first fully steel-framed building. The building is a Group 2 scheduled heritage building, of ‘national or regional significance’.

This landmark building in Christchurch’s central city is to be demolished. More than 235 listed heritage buildings have been demolished in Christchurch city and suburbs and in Lyttelton over the three years since the earthquake emergency. Heritage buildings are still being demolished by CERA: citizens still have no recourse to the RMA process in defence of a demolition such as this.

Sited on the corner of Manchester and Lichfield Streets, The Majestic is a key building with a rich history in cinema, performing arts and Christian worship. It is now one of the few surviving twentieth-century heritage buildings in the CBD. CERA compulsorily acquired the building, have issued a Section 38 full demolition notice, and have begun the early stages of demolition.

Earthquake damage is said to be moderate and repairable. Demolition is primarily for the land needed for the CERA-CCDU plan for the 9 metre widening of Manchester Street and as part of the eastern frame. There is strong support in arts, heritage and business communities for retention. The building would be ideal for future use in the east frame urban living zone and Innovation Precinct.

In December 2013 the Christchurch City Council vowed to help save the historic theatre and agreed the council should meet with CERA to emphasise the importance of retaining it. Historic Places Canterbury wanted the City Council to seek a moratorium on the demolition while a thorough engineering assessment was done.

Marches and rallies in protest at the demolition have been small but vociferous: many Christchurch people who would support retention of The Majestic are ‘exhausted’ living in post-earthquake Christchurch.

Save The Majestic spokespeople are calling for a halt to the demolition, consideration of Manchester Street widening alternatives and investigation of repair and strengthening costs. Possibilities of a legal challenge to the demolition are currently being explored (mid April.) For More Info: www.docomomo.org.nz/majestic-theatre-christchurch-demolit...
