This is the actual frame, not a crop. The watch has a diameter of 37mm. This was a hand held macro shot at the minimum focusing distance. Under these circumstances, my technique is to not use the focus ring, but to set it maximum magnification, and move the camera (along with my upper body, lol) back and forth to nail down the focus. Of course, it is necessary to stop breathing for a few seconds to accomplish this.
Rather than perfectly aligning the watch and the image plane, I kept the lens at a slight angle to see how much defocus I would have from the upper to the lower end of the watch. In the shot above, I focused on the Ulysse Nardin lettering. In the shot below, I focused on the little "SWISS MADE" lettering. I have also listed 100% crops of actual pixels.
