it has been 40 years since I had occasion to spend time in a laundry mat - 42 years!!!!! So what to do? Well let's just see if there is anything of interest in the machinery and atmosphere of the business.

'There's nothing to photograph'. It's a familiar feeling for any photographer at some point – yes really, been there, done that. And while it's familiar feeling, it's easy to fool yourself thinking that you need to be somewhere far away or there needs to be special circumstances like great light for good photographic opportunities. Sure being away from home or having beautiful golden hour in the park makes things easier, but in the end I think it's just a harmful way of thinking which doesn't open up new possibilities to one's photography. Once you decide that 'the weather is no good today' and leave the camera at home, you don't only cut out the possible photographic opportunities, but also reinforce the way of thinking that good photographic opportunities are somehow rare. It's easy to confirm this kind of rationale by not taking photographs and the field of view only gets narrower. Finally you are lost like a sitting duck with nothing to photograph.
But the truth is that there are photographic opportunities everywhere. We just don't see them, because we are so engaged with all kinds of ideas of what makes a good opportunity for a photograph. While the light is important, good photographs can also be found from the shadows. Even if being far away for photographic adventures sounds great, other opportunities are also present in home. In my personal search for the photographic opportunities I've learned to find some of them while working with mundane every day home appliances like washing machines, ovens, refrigerators and so on. Actually I've been quite surprised how easy it is to find interesting images if one just puts some imagination and effort in to it. Sure not all of them make into Tate Gallery, but it is an valuable experience to learn to make your own opportunities of what you have in hand. At least to me it has been a delight that has turned into a healthy addiction. So watch out for those opportunities that already live within your apartment. For example, the refrigerator offers interesting images easily while I've yet to find a working idea with the blender. And once you run out of the ideas, there are, of course, more home appliances available at the store, hah!

Today was fun. :) Spent the whole day with this awesome guy, Andrew, who also doubled as my assistant for this shoot. He gave me boosts into various dryers and got some "behind the scenes" shots on his phone. He was also kind enough to play me "Dirty Laundry" to rock out to. haha.
The laundromat was empty except for one other guy who acted like I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary by climbing into dryers and rolling around in this cart. I'm getting more and more confident waltzing into places like this and just going for it.
I apologize for the inconsistency in my editing...I'm going through a metamorphosis of sorts so I'm experimenting. Kit lens is becoming my friend and I'm not using a square crop? Go figure...
Now I have to study for a midterm. Woo...
This one is connected to the motor. I seem to remember that the one my grandmother had was hand-operated. If you have the need, brand new clothes wringers are still available today. Google "Calliger Hand Crank Clothes Wringer."
The scourge of fly tipping, ever present even in the most stunning places of the world. WTF is wrong with people..??!

Here are three photos I took of Mr K parrot eating some tasty sunflower seed on top of our washing machine! It had been a very warm and hot day, and Mr K parrot was sitting on our back railing wings slightly open and panting a little, So we opened our back fly screen door and put a bowl of sunflower seed on top of the washing machine, to see if he wanted to eat there, and he did. It was much cooler in the laundry. he sat they for 5 minutes enjoying his seed, and then he flew back outside and took off. It was only a once-off.
I haven't been to a laundromat in many years but had to make a trip when our 33 year old washer finally gave up the ghost. The trip required that I learn the modus operandi of washing clothing at a laundromat. Turns out that when you use one or more machines you place one of these little magnetic numbers on the machine to brand it as yours for the moment. Who knew...
