Hook mountain hike on Thanksgiving Day 2017. My aim is to see where Major John Andre and General Benedict Arnold met to in Sept 1780 to plot to hand West Point over to a the British Adjutant General Major Andre.
The meeting was fateful for both. Andre's ship the HMS Vulture would be forced to head downriver away from a cannon across the river at Teller's point. The Vulture had been hovering too close the front lines and the militia at Croton requested a cannon to fend her off. The request went to General Arnold who dragged his feet but ultimately, to avoid arousing suspician gave them a small cannon and small amount of powder. When the Militiamen turned it on the Vulture she fired back and then floated downstream stranding Major Andre behind American lines. Under "protection" of Gen Arnold, out of uniform and carrying the details of westpoint Andre was caught a few days later and tried as a spy. Instead of heading a force of picked troops to walk in and take West Point from Arnold, he was shipped to Tappan and hung. Arnold fled and lived the rest of his life in reviled by Americans and British alike. He had lost the British one of their most gifted and beloved soldiers and personality,cost them tens of thousands of pounds and never delivered up West Point or Washington. John Andre however is still admired. There is a Major Andre Drive but no Benedict Arnold Drive in Stony Point!

Long walk in the snow, 70 years after the Rhineland Battles
The Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial (French:Le Cimetière de Guerre Canadien Groesbeek) is located about three kilometres north of the village of Groesbeek, Netherlands. The cemetery contains 2,338 Canadian soldiers of World War II.
The cemetery is unique in that many of the dead were brought here from nearby Germany. It is one of the few cases where bodies were moved across international frontiers. It is believed that all fallen Canadian soldiers of the Rhineland battles, who were buried in German battlefields, were reinterred here (except for one who is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery). General H.D.G. Crerar, who commanded Canadian land forces in Europe, ordered that Canadian dead were not to be buried in German soil.
Thousands of Dutch children tend the graves of the soldiers buried here as they do throughout the Netherlands.
The cemetery also has a Cross of Sacrifice within it.[1]
