Je n' ai pas pour habitude de prendre les animaux en photo, mais celle-ci représente très bien mon chat, Athos. Il est toujours à l' entrée de la maison pour souhaiter la bienvenue ☺

Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) at Crusoe Reservoir, Kangaroo Flat

Pinkie and I stopped at this closed motel to take some photos and while we were oohing and aahing over how cute the place is, a very nice man came up to us and talked with us for a while.

He lives close by, and his parents ran the "Welcome Inn" for many years (I think he said from 1965 to right around 2000); he was even nice enough to go back home and bring us back a gift! He brought us one of the few remaining promotional ashtrays that they used to give out.

Valley Forge, Pennsylvania is best known as the home to General George Washington's Continental Army for the winters of 1777-1778. Back in those days, large scale combat wasn't conducted during the winter since snow and cold weather presented a logistical nightmare so armies would build up large camps where they could spend the winter. Despite popular belief, the winters during these years weren't especially harsh (the belief that they were is mostly due to America's romanticism of this period). The winters however were full of disease which plagued the troops who were in extremely close proximity to one another. During those two winters at Valley Forge, the Continental Army trained and became an even stronger unit.

I had visited Valley Forge once before (shortly after I graduated high school) but for some reason didn't remember it well. Walking around the park in the summer's high heat and ridiculous humidity was worth it. It's a beautiful place that's fully of amazing history.

ABOUT THE SERIES

In June 2010 Michelle and I traveled to Philadelphia (and surrounding areas) for a summer vacation and to visit her extended family. I'd been to Philadelphia twice before, once in eighth grade and once during college but I only remember bits and pieces of each previous trip. The trip during college was during the 2010 Republican National Convention (I wasn't there for the convention) and I remember the entire city resembling a police state with police everywhere due to all the protests.

Anyway, it was great to return to the city and see some of the surrounding areas I hadn't explored before. We visited during a heatwave (90 degree heat with intense humidity which apparently is a little unusual in June but typical in August) but it was well worth the trip.

13 years ago on February 26, 2005 my friend David Medaris called to tell me about the message that he had shoveled into the snow the day before. He wondered if I might want to go see it and photograph it. Well hell yes I said. So I grabbed my kites and camera gear and met David for the hike out onto Lake Monona. Well out from shore, out under the final approach to the airport, David had shoveled a greeting visible to air travelers as they came into Madison. It was a huge message using a 20 or more foot font. You can see David cleaning up the "o" in welcome from the dusting of snow that had fallen on his letters overnight. Sadly, David passed away in 2016 and I will always remember him for this incredible art installation and his joyful uplifting spirit. This was one of my last projects that I shot on film and this image was created by scanning and merging two slides together to piece together the entire scene.

The tradition of Salubong or welcome is the culminating holy week ritual that celebrates the resurrection of Christ. It is an pre dawn reenactment which requires a child dressed as an angel that would be lowered by ropes from a high platform to lift the mourning veil of the statue of a grieving Mother Mary . after the veil is lifted church bells are rung and fireworks exploded as a jubilant procession of the images of Christ and his mother are done all over the town eventually ending up inside the church.

Just above the plane's nose you can see the iconic green sign on top of Terminal 1. I love seeing that sign out of the window as I land in Dublin, to me it says "Welcome Home".

Interstate 80 follows fairly closely the old wagon routes of the early settlers from points east into California, and my AAA maps noted this. It was fun to imagine their impressions as they came over certain mountains and caught the vista of what was ahead. Many of the rock formations remain the same, even if much else has usually changed.

Or not. Me and Jay bought this annual membership card for National Trust about 18 months ago - the price was about 80 quid (!!) special offer. This year, over £100 to re-new. Have to say, I'm not overly impressed with we're seeing from the NT here in Norfolk.
