"Belek! Belek!"
© 2014 Rob Castro
In the Old Medina at Fes, if you hear "Belek! Belek!" behind you, stand aside because a heavily-laden donkey is bearing down on you. I was told by a local store owner that the word Belek comes from the root Bel, which means the mind. Hence, literally the cry of "Belek" is calling your attention - or calling to mind. More fascinating for me is that Moroccans don't have the letter B in their alphabet that to my untrained ears I hear "Puh-lak" instead. Our local guide warned us that if we don't heed, then we will be "Fuh-lat" or flat.
Taken at Fes, Morocco.

Chapter 4: Shut It Out - When you shut things out, most of it goes away - except for a lingering discomfort ... of betrayal. Who can you trust? Who is fair? Who is kind? Who has empathy? The lack of decorum is disgraceful. You keyboard warriors and trolls; You screen shooters and virtual gossips - Are you this way In Real Life? Or do you skulk away in a corner? Regardless. I shut you out.

Between December 16, 2012 and January 3, 2013, I met some of the most beautiful people in the Philippines. This is part of the series that documents their stories. The title "Bukas Na Kami" is a play on words in the Pilipino language. It could either mean "We are open" or "Tomorrow it's us." I'll let the viewers decide which translation they like.
Message me if you are interested in the book. Thanks.

“My name is Ketut Lasia. I was born on March 3, 1945 as the youngest son in a Hindu family in Peliatan, close to Ubud, the village of artists on the island of Bali in Indonesia.
“My parents were no painters. They were simple rice-farmers. Their life’s work consisted in growing rice, the daily food needed for us children. In my childhood I went to primary school, but no further. My parents were too poor to provide for any further education for me and my siblings. As a child I often went to the painters in our village. I watched them for hours and was amazed at the way they could take the images and pictures in their minds and turn them into paintings. I wanted to be a painter too."
“When... I began to work on my own. Over and over again religious questions kept bothering me. I wrestled with what I had heard from the Christians. I was uncertain and felt that I needed solid ground in my life, some sort of affirmation.
“But, of course, I was a Hindu. In my religion that did not exist. There was no faith in any rescue or healing for humankind in Hinduism. In my religion the law of Karma ruled.
Grace, mercy, forgiveness were unknown." Crossings Community, Inc.
Wrestling with this issue and inspite of exclusion by his Hindu community and by his brother, he chose to identify as a Christian.
Lasia's paintings of Christian gospel are expressed in Balinese settings and styles.
His principal paintings include the accounts of the birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. Also the stories of Jesus told are significant in his folios, for they are readily contextualised in Bali, for they explore the artists' seeking of affirmation in life, and are a means to communicate the life values he embraced.

Berliner Pflanzenwelt auf Blau
These flora portraits, were born out of an awareness of my own loneliness, so the making of them has forced me out of the house more often. After twelve years of doing little else, they have become my passion and delight. I now exhibit them in Berlin and London and in group shows around Europe.
These photographs are all daylight, made in city green spaces, with virtually no post processing. They are cooked in the camera.
When I look back at my pictures I always think, look at what I would have missed if I wasn't looking through my camera.
“As if you were on fire from within.
The moon lives in the lining of your skin.”
