Can dogs be better artists than us? Here I was shooting this still life of my toy cameras and Sergio Larrain's photo, and our Pomeranian started complaining. She insisted that she needed to direct the shoot.
My tribute to toy cameras. I have a few of them, couple of Holgas and a Diana, which I cherished and made remarkable photos. They say that post-modern art is about the process. Yeah, the ones I've taken with these toy cameras may look crappy but the process resulted in very interesting experience and stories to tell. The photo on the middle was shot by Sergio Larrain in 1957 at Valparaiso, Chile. The original photo must have been taken with a professional medium format camera or maybe a Leica. (Somebody please tell me if you have this information.) But what would it looked like if it had been taken with one of the toy cameras? Hence my interpretation of Larrain's iconic shot. I think it still looks good. Personally, I think it even looks better. Anybody wants to trade their Leica or Hasselblad with my Holga. I'll trade two Holgas for either one.

Chapter 5: Dispirited & Fractured - That's the problem when people reveal things they shouldn't, and there is only one side of the story. And you have a hint of the other side. When the dust settles, a split in your psyche occurs. You end up asking the question: why did you do that? You've tried to cast doubt on someone else but instead you've hurt yourself, and disappointed me ... your friend. Their past with you was not relevant.

“As my sufferings mounted I soon realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation -- either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course.” - Martin Luther King Jr.
A few years ago, I thought I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a Street Photographer. It didn't take long for me to realize that I sucked at it at times. Sometimes I would get fortunate in getting killer shots. But oftentimes my best shots are miserable lots. But this is the essence. Perhaps, that is why I fall back into portraits. And nowadays when I'm sober I just take pictures of non-moving objects. They usually don't complain a lot.
Like any other skills, I need to practice taking pictures. I've always wanted to take photos of vintage cameras. I do own a few but I felt that I didn't have the right elements to make it work. Until today. I just remembered Andreas Feininger's photo of Dennis Stock, the face behind the camera. Stock went on to become a leading photojournalist with Magnum Photos, which is famous for their street photography.
Which brings me to vintage cameras. The Fed is a neat rangefinder that kind of works like a Leica, the most coveted camera by every street photographer. Not really comparable as far as quality. But it's a poor man's Leica. I could count with my one hand how many fine photos I've shot with the Fed. Actually, I'm lying. I don't have any decent shots I made with it. But the camera looks cool. For that, it scores some points. It has to.
This is my tribute to Feininger's iconic photo: A picture of my Fed 4 in front of the picture.

Black and white photos tend look timeless in my opinion. As someone commented this is a Kodak moment. Though maybe Fujifilm -- the camera I used to shoot this -- will probably resent the reference to Kodak.
The picture of the two girls could have been taken in the 1950s. Yet they have just been captured last summer. That's 2012 for those of you reading in the future.
I like how their dresses appear 50'ish. Even their hairstyles look retrospective to me. Somebody told me it's called the Betsy Johnson look. Now I know what to tell my hair stylist next time I go for a hair cut.
And the M&Ms. Did you know they were created in the 40s so that the chocolate won't melt?
The two girls are focusing on something other than the M&Ms -- that is a bit of a mystery because it is out of the frame. What was it?
