Better is one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

I took this picture while in South Beach because it instantly reminded me of this visual artist.
She does a lot of illustrations of people with animal heads or are they animals with human bodies? I don't know.... I let you decide ;-)

The Kodak 35 is arguably the ugliest camera ever made. I own one. It is not only ugly physically but functionally the beast is cursed. It ate two rolls of my 35mm films. No it just didn't eat them. It devoured them and spit them out or whatever were left of them like fishbones. I never made any single decent shot out of this camera. That is why I think it is only appropriate to have this camera proped in front of the most beautiful voice ever around: Louis Armstrong. He not only played beautifully but he sang like he played. It was dearly. Hail to the king. Satchmo's outstanding photo was taken by Philippe Halsman, who shot this for Life magazine. The Kodak 35's paltry photo was taken by Juzno, who shot this for himself for lack of anything better to do with his time.

This photo of a trio strangely started without a single stranger. Here is how things happened.
September 8th was an important day for the visual arts community in Montréal. It was the evening of an event titled Rentrez! de Gaspé. On that night, 8 prominent artist run centers located in the buildings at 5445 and 5455, avenue de Gaspé, in the Mile-End, held simultaneous exhibition openings to launch their fall 2016 season. In the communicating ground floor lobbies of the buildings you could see a DJ, find a bar and some things to nibble on and also watch a tech geek doing computer mapping. As you can guess, there was a good overall party atmosphere.
As I hopped from an exhibition to another, I was struck by the ingenuity, effectiveness and graphic strength of “Bend and stretch” a two part installation by a collective named “We make carpets” at Diagonale. This installation was made with three elements only: nails, thin rubber bands and paper clips of exquisite colors.
I thought the artists had to be in the room on such an evening and tried to guess who they were. I saw two ladies keeping an eye on the crowd and approached them. It turned out they were Diagonale staff members. One of them, Chloé, was its Artistic director and the person that had invited this collective for a two week Art residency. She said they were from Netherlands and she had appreciated their work in Europe. I explained her that I liked the work in front of me a lot and would like to do a portrait of one of the artists. She told me they were wandering around soaking up the evening’s atmosphere and ran right out to find them.
Chloé first came back with Bob and Maria. I understand doing portraits of career artist is a bit touchy, so I showed them a few of my previous stranger photos and explained what I wished to do. Bob and Maria said OK but we are three and then ran out to find Stijn. At that point I figured I had no choice but to follow through and forget about a solo portrait. In a way, it’s OK, as I hope to do contextual group portraits one day.
Luckily, Stijn also said yes and I was able to get a shot that worked well for all them in four of five clicks. Stars were lined up right I guess.
After I took this photo, they explained me that the name “We make carpets” came from their collaboration for the “Instant Nature” exhibition during the Dutch design week in 2009 and that they actually never intended to make carpets. They had collected pine needled and cones and put together a piece titled “Forest carpet”. The three friends have since pursued independent solo careers but still collaborate on collective projects that stem from this work.
I strongly invite you to have a look at their web site. Their collective work is based on a simple process not unlike canvas embroidery but expanded to a larger scale. It is characterized by a highly innovative use of material. All of their collective work is ephemeral and lives on only through photographic documentation. You will appreciate the variety of concepts they have built for events throughout Europe and find detailed photos of the pieces shown at Diagonale.
For their first North-American venture at Diagonale, all the material they needed likely fitted in a single handbag but their installation nonetheless fully occupied the space. At that time, I was getting ready to leave myself in four days for an out of town exhibition and was bit weary everything would fit my Focus station wagon. Imagine how smart I thought they were!
I went back to see their work in a quieter context the next day. As I was leaving, the artists walked in. They were going on a canoe trip in the Québec wilderness. Perhaps another great opportunity to collect pine needles and cones!

“Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.”

Nevermind the heat
Coming off the street
She wants to party
She wants to get down
All she wants to do is
All she wants to do is dance
And make romance
All she wants to do is dance
[All She Wants To Do Is Dance, Don Henley]
She was definitely on something. I have been staring at her for the last few minutes as she kept dancing and singing to the crowd at the market. Some were laughing at her. But many just ignored her. Finally, she saw me taking pictures of her. She came closer and performed for me. I never understood a word she said but I knew she wanted some money in return for her performance. I gave her Php 20, and she seemed happy with it. I was glad that I was there to capture her.
