URBAN PAINTING GALLERY is pleased to present fever of the worn land, recent works by artist DAL EAST, in what will be his first solo exhibition in Italy.

DAL EAST was born in Beijing, China in 1984 and is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa.

He studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts and began doing street art at 2004 under the alias DAL. He is inspired by the way the material world revolves, how the spiritual world unfolds, life’s emotions and the infinite space around us. He uses different mediums, methods, disciplines and spaces to create his works. www.daleast.com

Fever of the worn Land.

The city, inhabited by ghosts, has disappeared, abandoned buildings are melting down, returning to the earth.

Fever is coming from a worn land, crossed by animals that seem to have forgetfullness of the human being.

This is the work of DAL East, Chinese street artist, born in 1984.

One of the most promising artists of the new international scene. Painter, photographer, sculptor and video maker, the work of DAL is representative of a new season in street art.

He is taking from contemporary art a multidisciplinary approach and a critical vision and combining it with the spirit of urban art that plays with architectural elements and perspectives.

With ink, brush and spray, DAL starts an incredible journey into the possibilities of art, giving shape and substance firstly to feelings, around which bodies are brought to life.

In his works we can find a gesture that seems a deliberately continuous path. The technique of the sketch becomes the matrix through which DAL has developed a new visual alphabet. The choice is clear, to describe the breath of life, the physical energy hidden in the relationships between elements, being it dark omen or intimate glow.

It may seem an attempt to focus on change and DAL's work contains a reflection on the balance of power through the composition, representing the empty space, leaving emotions uncovered.

The war in ex Yugoslavia started twenty-five years ago in 1991. Firstly it was Slovenia to move towards independence and then the Croatian War of Independence contributed to the continued dismantling of Tito's united Yugoslavia. The conflicts in Bosnia and Kosovo in the mid-nineties completed the bloodiest decade in recent European history.

Twenty-five years have passed since the start of the independence conflicts in the 90s and the Balkans still represent the symbol of the most atrocious war on European soil after the Second World War. The Balkans are only a few hours away from Paris, London, Berlin or Rome by air but Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia are still considered 'strangers' to the European Union. The region still evokes images of Kalashnikovs, mafia and slivovitz fruit brandy, rather than peace and prosperity. Though the dream of the Balkan region was to become part of the common European dream, we are currently witnessing the Balkanization of Europe.

The Balkans represent the heart of Europe, situated at a major crossroads between mainland Europe and the Near East. The identity of the region still represents the point of collision between the former Yugoslav republics. Starting from a period of Ottoman influence, the rule of Christian Orthodoxy to the dominion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, for the Balkans the whole 20th century was marked by war and corruption.

And what about now?

How do the citizens of the former Yugoslavian republics live today? How do they perceive the war in ex Yugoslavia? What do its younger generations aspire to? What about Yugo-nostalgia and Tito? How is the European Union perceived in the moment of the greatest migrant crisis in European history? And above all: what about dialog in the region?

Goodbye Tito, hello chaos! originally is the motto from the project Balkans and Beyond, launched and edited from the European magazine cafebabel.com that unites fourteen young journalists, photographers and video makers from the region who represented the current political, social and cultural situation across the Balkans through their own lenses. The seven countries were covered: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia.

Each story was covered by a journalistic partnership, bringing together one writer and one photographer/video-maker. The panel will integrate the presentation of the Balkans and Beyond e-book.

This is the first half of a slideshow on bloodwood. The scenery is from around Central Australia and particularly the bush around Alice Springs and between Alice Springs and Hart's Range, NT

.

The tune is an original composition by an Australian, Dan Gordon. Fiddle and bodhran playing, as well as the photography and clip making, by me ... tee hee hee!

The significance of the Bloodwoods coming into flower in such abundance is that the trees, hither-to hidden in the mellieu of the bush, become hugely apparent.

The gumnuts of this tree (after they have lost their seeds to the ground) are very good for beading into necklaces and things ... and the trees are generally very bountiful (insects and birds) when they are in flower ... sigh!

I made this audiovisual I think on Windows Video Maker? in June 2011 ... when my fiddle playing was a tad better than my photography. There are a lot of memories in this you just cannot see ... tee hee hee!

In May 2018 I was invited as artist on board on Kleronia, a 18 mt. cutter, in team with a video maker, a writer and a few skippers, to support the “Cognition in the wind” research project directed by Roberto Casati (Institut Jean Nicod, CNRS ENS EHESS, Paris). Photo: On YouTube I don’t reveal how I make any of my videos because it takes away from the illusion that what you are seeing isn’t real. But the point of these Flickr assignments is to teach so this photo shows you how to make flying M&M’s. The table is turned on its side and propped up with 2x4’s on each side to give me room under the table edge to move the M&M blocks. The table edge is rounded so to make it look like the M&M’s were on the table, I glued wooden skewers to wood blocks (seen on the floor) raising the M&M’s up five inches so they would appear to be resting on the table surface as they marched out. The M&M package is just taped to the table. It’s this illusion that they are on the table that sells the idea that the M&M’s are going up in the air. But in fact, like all Stop Motion Animation (SMA) videos, most things are done horizontally. Once they start firing into the air, everything is done on the floor. A couple other things. I made a simple rig to extend the camera out over the scene and counter balanced it with a five-pound weight. The lighting is just the overhead dining room lights with paper towels taped under them so they wouldn’t shine straight down. The other light is just a floor lamp next to the camera and I used my car sunshade to reflect the light horizontally so any shadows would come from what appears to be overhead, which is in fact the side. The one thing that I like about this video is something so simple. It’s the reflection of the M&M’s on the table. I didn’t notice it while taking the photos, but it reinforces the fact that this wasn’t done with a computer which makes it that much more believable.

In the assignment I made the statement to keep reminding yourself “What you are doing isn’t real”. This video is exactly what I mean by that statement. The movie viewer thinks everything is being viewed normally when in fact the actual world is turned sideways. Taking individual pictures to create a movie vs. filming an actual movie gives the SMA video maker so much more control of their environment. For the person using a real movie camera, to make M&M’s go up in the air, they need to use computers while the SMA video maker only needs to turn their camera on it’s side. Another thing that is an example of not real is the first firework when it sparkles. That’s just two photos duplicated several times and run back to back to back etc. You don’t always need to create a new scene for each frame. Sometimes you can reuse photos.

The photos for this video took me as I said off and on, two days to complete. Just so you know, this could have been done in one day except for a few issues. One, I was using peanut M&M’s. I thought of using plain but I felt they weren’t big enough. The issue with the peanut M&M’s was trying to keep them from rolling away. The second issue was the camera rig. Because of the counterweight, it would wobble every time I picked up the shutter release and so I would have to wait a few seconds before I could take a picture. If I had used coins it would have been so much quicker, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun to watch.

A final thought, at six frames per second, this video is far from being high quality, but that doesn’t stop it from being something fun to watch and if you can do something like this (maybe not turning the table on it’s side) with your kids, they will be excited at the end result. Something as simple as this might lead them to a career at Pixar. You never know.
