The war in ex Yugoslavia started twenty-five years ago in 1991. Firstly it was Slovenia to move towards independence and then the Croatian War of Independence contributed to the continued dismantling of Tito's united Yugoslavia. The conflicts in Bosnia and Kosovo in the mid-nineties completed the bloodiest decade in recent European history.
Twenty-five years have passed since the start of the independence conflicts in the 90s and the Balkans still represent the symbol of the most atrocious war on European soil after the Second World War. The Balkans are only a few hours away from Paris, London, Berlin or Rome by air but Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia are still considered 'strangers' to the European Union. The region still evokes images of Kalashnikovs, mafia and slivovitz fruit brandy, rather than peace and prosperity. Though the dream of the Balkan region was to become part of the common European dream, we are currently witnessing the Balkanization of Europe.
The Balkans represent the heart of Europe, situated at a major crossroads between mainland Europe and the Near East. The identity of the region still represents the point of collision between the former Yugoslav republics. Starting from a period of Ottoman influence, the rule of Christian Orthodoxy to the dominion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, for the Balkans the whole 20th century was marked by war and corruption.
And what about now?
How do the citizens of the former Yugoslavian republics live today? How do they perceive the war in ex Yugoslavia? What do its younger generations aspire to? What about Yugo-nostalgia and Tito? How is the European Union perceived in the moment of the greatest migrant crisis in European history? And above all: what about dialog in the region?
Goodbye Tito, hello chaos! originally is the motto from the project Balkans and Beyond, launched and edited from the European magazine cafebabel.com that unites fourteen young journalists, photographers and video makers from the region who represented the current political, social and cultural situation across the Balkans through their own lenses. The seven countries were covered: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia.
Each story was covered by a journalistic partnership, bringing together one writer and one photographer/video-maker. The panel will integrate the presentation of the Balkans and Beyond e-book.

Screen City Symposium: Rethinking the City - Spaces, Images, Communication: Improving New Urban Models.
Michelle Teran (CA) presented ‘Folgen’, a 45-minute lecture performance drawing on the existing narratives of video makers found on YouTube to build a multi-layered media landscape of Berlin. Teran’s subjective approach, which weaves together mapping, literature and live performance, combines fragments of images and sound from YouTube videos with her own narration, using the traces video makers have left in the public sphere of the internet to follow people throughout the city. Through this process, the city becomes a place to be inhabited and experienced through another’s narrative — stepping into somebody else’s shoes. The performance is a deliberate mixing between reality and fiction, an interweaving narrative about desire. The many protagonists involved in the making of the work create the stories told during the performance.
The German word ‘Folgen’ has several meanings. As a verb it means ‘to follow’, while as a noun it refers to episodes, consequences, implications or effects. The project draws on several meanings of the word. The act of following someone or something builds up a collection of stories, pieced together in different orders and variations. Concurrently, both the disclosure and the act of following personal information towards its geographical source has unanticipated effects and consequences.

Call for Entries: HYBRID EFFECTS . From Solid Body to Liquid Cities
Palazzo Radetzky, Milan (Italy) – April 14 – 19, 2015
Deadline: March 25, 2015
It’s LIQUID Group and International ArtExpo, in collaboration with VALORIZZAZIONI CULTURALI | ART-EVENTS, are selecting all interesting architecture and design projects, photo works, experimental video-art works and performance art works to include in the next 2015 exhibition:
HYBRID EFFECTS . From Solid Body to Liquid Cities, international exhibition of architecture, design, photography, video-art and performance art, hosted in Milan, in the prestigious and luxurious Palazzo Radetzky, in the heart of Brera Quarter, from the 14 to the 19 of April 2015, in the same period of the renowned international fair “Salone del Mobile”, the most keenly awaited event in the world of furniture.
Architects, designers and urban planners are invited to take part in the festival submitting panels, video-architecture works, photos, installations and scale models, projects and visions about contemporary desertification of the real cities and repopulation of the digital world. They are invited to analyze the evolution of the liquid architecture and the integration between reality and virtual world/technologies; the relationship between architecture and the new virtual no-places, and the possible future results. Selection will be made by It’s LIQUID, VALORIZZAZIONI CULTURALI and ART-EVENTS.
Artists, photographers and video makers are invited to submit photos, art videos and performance art pieces, which represent and analyze the current evolution of the physical body inside the liquid reality of the virtual world; its transformation from a concrete state to a “liquid” extension. Artworks will investigate the relationship between real cities and virtual places, and how the man lives this dualism and the disaggregation of the physical identities. Selection will be made by It’s LIQUID, International ArtExpo and ART-EVENTS.
To take part in the selection, send your works’ submissions with a CV/biography, some still images (for video-art), links of videos/performances, pictures of artworks and architecture/design projects via e-mail to lucacurci@lucacurci.com.
Deadline for applications is March 25, 2015 (11.59 PM of your local time).
The event will be curated by Arch. Luca Curci (founder of LUCA CURCI ARCHITECTS, International ArtExpo and It’s LIQUID Group) and organized in partnership with VALORIZZAZIONI CULTURALI | ART-EVENTS.
Luxury, prestige, and comfort are the features of Palazzo Radetzky. The accurate and skilful renovation work that is still underway, will permit to transform the ground floor of the Palace in a private gallery with an exclusive courtyard located in the heart of Brera Quarter, in a unique position of Milano city centre. Equipped with all services and facilities. Designed in the second decade of the Nineteenth century by renowned architect Pietro Pestagalli and built close to the Sforzesco Castle, this palace strikes at the first glance because of its extraordinarily elegant façade in late neo-classical style with decorations and precious external finishes.
The Salone del Mobile is the global benchmark for the Home Furnishing Sector. An invaluable tool for the industry as well as an ongoing, quite extraordinary promotional vehicle. After the success of the 2014 edition – attended by 311,781 trade operators – 205,464 of whom from foreign Countries; over 39,000 members of the general public and 6,276 communication operators – the Salone Internazionale del Mobile is reconfirmed as the acknowledged exclusive showcase for the latest in furnishing, with a vast range of top quality products in every conceivable style.
Starting from 2001, Luca Curci with International ArtExpo and It’s LIQUID Group, have curated and organized more than 80 contemporary art events, with the participation of about 2.500 international artists from all-over the world (UK, Spain, Italy, France, Austria, Portugal, The Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Greece, Germany, Turkey, Poland, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Israel, UAE, Russia, Thailand, etc.) with an average of 45 artworks exhibited in each show (with a maximum of 108 artists involved in the great MORPHOS festival held in Venice during the Architecture Biennale 2014). The organization has international partnerships with art venues in Italy, Turkey, USA, Spain, Argentina, UK, Middle East, etc., and collaborates with museums, galleries and institutions such as MuMo – Museum Montanelli in Prague, Laura Haber Gallery in Buenos Aires, MIXER gallery in Istanbul and MECA art center in Almeria.

URBAN PAINTING GALLERY is pleased to present "fever of the worn land", recent works by artist DAL EAST, in what will be his first ever solo exhibition.
DAL EAST was born in Beijing, China in 1984 and is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa.
He studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts and began doing street art at 2004 under the alias DAL. He is inspired by the way the material world revolves, how the spiritual world unfolds, life’s emotions and the infinite space around us. He uses different mediums, methods, disciplines and spaces to create his works.
Fever of the worn Land.
The city, inhabited by ghosts, has disappeared, abandoned buildings are melting down, returning to the earth.
Fever is coming from a worn land, crossed by animals that seem to have forgetfullness of the human being.
This is the work of DAL East, Chinese street artist, born in 1984.
One of the most promising artists of the new international scene. Painter, photographer, sculptor and video maker, the work of DAL is representative of a new season in street art.
He is taking from contemporary art a multidisciplinary approach and a critical vision and combining it with the spirit of urban art that plays with architectural elements and perspectives.
With ink, brush and spray, DAL starts an incredible journey into the possibilities of art, giving shape and substance firstly to feelings, around which bodies are brought to life.
In his works we can find a gesture that seems a deliberately continuous path. The technique of the sketch becomes the matrix through which DAL has developed a new visual alphabet. The choice is clear, to describe the breath of life, the physical energy hidden in the relationships between elements, being it dark omen or intimate glow.
It may seem an attempt to focus on change and DAL's work contains a reflection on the balance of power through the composition, representing the empty space, leaving emotions uncovered.

URBAN PAINTING GALLERY is pleased to present fever of the worn land, recent works by artist DAL EAST, in what will be his first solo exhibition in Italy.
He uses different mediums, methods, disciplines and spaces to create his works. www.daleast.com

This time I used Hollywood FX Video Maker to slow the video down and
add a filter. Then I used ReelDirector to edit it.
In May 2018 I was invited as artist on board on Kleronia, a 18 mt. cutter, in team with a video maker, a writer and a few skippers, to support the “Cognition in the wind” research project directed by Roberto Casati (Institut Jean Nicod, CNRS ENS EHESS, Paris).
