FORT IRWIN, Calif. -- The 2916th Aviation Battalion utilized an off-cycle window in their calendar March 20 - 23 to conduct brigade-level training in the National Training Center's "Box". The exercise culminated at the Fort Irwin Weed Army Community Hospital (WACH) March 23.
The goal of the training is to test readiness as well as hone emergency medical skills among the participating service members. One simulation presented the participants with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack on a troop transport that resulted in 16 casualties. The role players required triage at the point of injury in the training area, then airlifted back to the WACH on Fort Irwin for treatment. This was a large-scale training module that involved complex planning.
To make the exercise as authentic as possible training units had no warning of what they would encounter throughout the course of the event and participants were alerted only as the scenario unfolded, just as if the casualties and events were real. Large casualty events of this kind take a special type of planning coordination, material and geography to execute, and even more consideration to undertake, which makes the NTC an ideal venue for such training.
The 2916th assumed the role of air medevac, requiring multiple airlifts to bring all casualties back to the WACH, where staff members prioritized, stabilized and treated the mock casualties, then prepared to fly any they determined needing specialized care beyond WACH capabilities to other nearby available medical facilities for more extensive treatment.

What Is Ayurvedic Purifying?
Ayurvedic purifying, otherwise called Panchakarma, is a conventional detoxification and restoration treatment that has been utilized in India for millennia. "Panchakarma" signifies "five activities" in Sanskrit, which alludes to the five fundamental strategies utilized in the purging system.
The objective of Ayurvedic purifying is to eliminate poisons and pollutions from the body, further develop processing, and equilibrium the doshas, or the three principal energies that administer the body and brain. An all encompassing methodology includes a blend of diet, natural cures, knead, and different treatments to assist the body with wiping out squander and reestablish harmony.
the five fundamental procedures of panchakarma are:

Ayurvedic purging is a complicated treatment that ought to be embraced under the direction of a certified Ayurvedic expert. It isn't suggested for everybody, and there are sure circumstances that might make it inadmissible. It is vital to counsel a certified expert prior to starting any Ayurvedic purging project.
An Ayurvedic purge should be possible whenever of year, yet is particularly useful at the progress starting with one season then onto the next.
An at-home purge requires negligible supplies, yet takes care of business better in the event that you clear your schedule for the span you pick, so you can completely focus on the excursion with your brain, body, and heart.
There's an equivalent accentuation on readiness, purifying, and restoration.
This isn't the kind of purify where you gorge on the food sources you'll dispose of before you start and quickly eat French fries whenever you have finished. All things being equal, similar to everything Ayurveda, there is a delicate passage.
The purge occurs in three stages:
In the first place, there is a sluggish end of handled food, liquor, caffeine, and essentially anything with the exception of mung beans, rice, and veggies. This assists with setting up your body for eating just kitchari.
Then, at that point, there is the dynamic period of purging comprising of the kitchari diet and assigned taking care of oneself practices.
At long last, there is a restoration period. This stage is critical — whenever you have killed ama and redone your processing, your body is prepared to ingest what you consume. It's essential to pick an eating routine and natural enhancements that will assist with tending to any tissues, or dhatus, that need modifying.
Oh, the oil!
Assuming you have any involvement in Ayurveda whatsoever, you realize that oil is typically the solution for any illness.
We love our oil and the purge is no special case.
In the dynamic stage, you participate in outer oleation by doing Nasya Oil, Ear Oil, and abhyanga prior to showering and, when suitable, inside oleation by drinking ghee first thing.
Ghee is consumed in expanding adds up to go about as a vehicle (or for this situation, gheehicle) for releasing and eliminating ama, while the outer oiling serves to both flow lymph and feed tissues. Different choices for inward oiling during a scrub incorporate castor endlessly oil douches. For all inward oleation, it means a lot to work with a certified specialist.
Processing is the concentration — and not simply actual assimilation.
Ayurveda instructs that a large portion of our diseases start with absorption, yet legitimate handling of food isn't all we really want to process for imperativeness and wellbeing.
Ayurveda uniquely believes that we also have a mental and emotional digestive system.
Hence, an Ayurvedic scrub isn't just body centered, yet additionally urges us to get some margin to manage past and current feelings, contemplations, and encounters.
Valid, the kitchari is a major part because of its edibility, however you'll find a mono-diet can likewise let loose headspace. Also, when we have the opportunity to explore our psyche, we frequently understand that our prosperity relies upon things past the macronutrients.
As a matter of fact, you might take your Ayurvedic purge further and zero in on mental and profound purifying.
Likewise with all purifies, pay attention to everything that your body is saying to you. Notice and change depending on the situation, and arise feeling a recharged feeling of liveliness and connectedness with your entire self.

Best known for his innovative, award-winning 2005 short Uso Justo, Coleman Miller has been making films and videos for over 25 years utilizing a variety of techniques including found footage, collage, and various mash-up experimentation based on whatever tools he’s had at his disposal. We are happy to present this long-overdue overview of Miller’s work.
“It always starts with Play. Especially working with found footage – it’s like being a five year old in a brand new sandbox. Or playing with blocks. You start mixing and matching things… just to see. Then maybe a leaf blows into the sandbox and you incorporate that. Soon you have a foundation and it all flows from there. The hardest part is getting up from the sandbox and saying ‘Done’. But really, any sandbox will do.” – Coleman Miller
“Coleman Miller is destined for admiration and great poverty.” - Isabella Rossellini

Step Off A Ten-Foot Platform With Your Clothes On, by Coleman Miller
USA, 1990, 7 minutes, 16 mm
While working as a printer in a film lab in San Francisco Miller, was able to use equipment most filmmakers didn’t even know existed. Obtaining special use of a continuous contact printer, which he used every day, was particularly inspiring. By manipulating found footage he was able to create a body of work that turned the medium of film back around on itself. Miller was able to invent many new printing techniques, which he continues to incorporate today. During these years, the film lab became a ten-year festival of experimentation and from it came the most consistent additions to his body of work.
In Step Off A Ten Foot Platform With Your Clothes On, Miller expounds his foray into found and experimental film by compiling which had been, until Uso Justo, his most successful and critically acclaimed work. Produced while Miller was still working for a San Francisco based film printer, once again we see Miller playing with materials directly available to him. During this time time, he was turning film around on itself in a purely visual way – showing the sprocketholes, edge numbers, dirt and frame lines, etc. Again we’ll see the use of contrapuntal sound in order to punctuate dramatic and often playful images. Miller also takes the time to examine what lies in between or, more appropriately, just hidden aspects of film. Long stretches of dirty black or white leader touched with color, usually an annoyance to the traditional viewer, display an entertaining dance of schmutz that is allowed to take the focus. Platform briefly introduces it’s visual styles and slowly allows them to progress into a spirited visual mash-up of his techniques. Ordinary images sifted thru Miller’s mental machine, like the little dog in the film, yanked to unreasonable visual extremes.Platform would go on to win numerous festival awards, be screened at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, and become culled material for commercial exhibitions such as the 1992 MTV Music Video Awards and the opening title sequences for MTV’s 1991 television show The Big Picture.
Fixated Whereabouts by Coleman Miller
USA, 1983, 5 minutes, 16 mm
Deeply inspired by Bruce Conner’s Take The 5:10 To Dreamland, Miller’s initial dabbling into filmmaking shows natural mastery of his available tools. Shot simply with a super 8 camera, Miller’s exercises began to define the directions of his current work. What, upon first glance, appears to be the tired student project that pervade the novice class of experimental film, a deeper inspection reveals Miller’s creation of a bizarre and surreal world just around the corner from your house. Contrapuntal sound reverses commonly seen images, and simple experimental devices distract the viewer into provocative thought. San Francisco’s skyline watched out a window appeals to a strange unfulfilled longing, so it shouldn’t surprise the reader that the scene is shot from a postcard found in Miller’s hotel, years before he ever took up residence there. Please note the first display of existential angst. Every ordinary event, every car-ride or ballgame take on an otherworldly effect. An escalator, found sound, a mirror… all objects often overlooked, suddenly presented turned on their own ear. Fixated Whereabouts means what it suggests as Miller’s universe stops at a place, records what it sees, interprets the material with a clash of the surreal, and then punctuates with moments of fright and wonder.
Motion Pictures by Coleman Miller

In Miller’s most abrupt work- Motion Pictures – he begins pursuit of new layering techniques with found and manipulated materials. Produced at Monaco Lab.

The Bony Orbit by Coleman Miller

The dry narration of an educational film brings forth surprising results as a couple surrenders to love.
What Gives by Coleman Miller
USA, 1994, 2 minutes, digital projection
The larf of What Gives introduces Miller’s playfulness, foreshadowing a common theme throughout the future of Miller’s work. Surreal, experimental slapstick executed to perfection. Again produced at Monaco Lab, with materials and tools at his disposal.
Kirk, we hardly knew ya by Coleman Miller
USA, 1999, 12 minutes, 16 mm
Produced as an installation piece, ‘Kirk’ is the most basic of Miller’s work, never intended to be screened beyond that environment. But as we watch it today, the subject matter retains relevance. The pressures of business and technology barked out by the enigmatic Shatner, transposed with the inane pursuits of a culture that can’t understand why it should be bombed. Miller’s statement, though simple and cheaply produced, retains its’ humor in the light of such damning circumstance.
Take The L by Coleman Miller
USA, 2006, 3 minutes, digital projection
Using his 8 year-old, consumer level 1-chip digital video camera, Miller dials in the controls to capture a frighteningly sharp commuter train trip. Using a technique available to almost any beginner level FCP user, he transcends the viewer into a widely familiar but deeply disorienting and hypnotic landscape. In watching the center, the viewer can only imagine the thrilling moment when, as a child, they first held a kaleidoscope up to the light. But looking out toward the edges, Take The L will subtly reveal it’s common subject matter and remind the viewer of its’ reality. Once again Miller takes the most mundane of activities and develops it into an explosion of kaleidoscopic visual beauty and playfulness. Miller once again delivers stimulating execution of the most basic technique driven to its’ edges.
Heaven by Coleman Miller
USA, 2007, 3 minutes, digital video
Jon Nelson asked me to add some visuals to one of his audio mix cuts for a show in Minneapolis. I chose the one with Steve Martin talking about heaven. Of the two of those i really believe in Steve Martin.
Uso Justo by Coleman Miller
USA, 2005, 22 minutes, digital projection
Miller’s first narrative creation is like nothing you have seen before. Or since. Uso Justo (roughly translated: “Fair Use”) is restructured completely from an obscure 1959 Mexican film. Miller reaches deep into this black and white melodrama with both hands and turns it inside out. When an experimental filmmaker arrives to shoot his next film in the fictional town of Uso Justo, things start getting strange. The townsfolk are both thrilled and confused by the sudden arrival of this mysterious artist. As the invisible filmmaker pulls the strings, the unfolding story proves to be existential and hilarious, intelligent and stupid.

I put this together when my computer was acting like shit and crashing frequently. Coincidentally this was right after i had gone to my grandfather’s house and picked up a bunch of old metal sections of heating pipes, elbow joints, washer’s, nut’s, bolts, handtools, etc. So when the computer would crash i would go out on the back porch to my buckets of metal and try twisting up some sculpture. And i began to realize how much I liked working with my hands again. It was such a breath of fresh air – much better i thought than staring at a monitor. At the same time i would be watching and rewatching old 16mm educational films and noticing how almost every one of these had a close shot of hands.
The human hand. What a great tool. And taken for granted.

Utilizing a Heiland rod bracket, and a Spiratone twin head. The Spiratone has two swivel shoes on either side of the top mount, and is an interface between the cold shoe and PC cord. You plug the flash(s) into the sockets on the front of the mount, and the coiled cord into the camera PC socket.
The one advantage of this rig is it raises the flash two and a half inches from the level of the Heiland bracket mount. The disadvantages are bulkiness, and interference with the focusing dial.

Advanced Additive Manufacturing for Hypersonic Aircraft
Utilizing new methods of fabrication and construction, make it possible to use additive manufacturing, dramatically reducing the time and costs of producing hypersonic platforms from missiles, aircraft, and space capable craft. Instead of aircraft being produced in piece, then bolted together; small platforms can be produced as a single unit and large platforms can be produces in large section and mated without bolting. These techniques include using exotic materials and advanced assembly processes, with an end result of streamlining the production costs and time for hypersonic aircraft; reducing months of assembly to weeks. Overall, this process greatly reduced the cost for producing hypersonic platforms. Even to such an extent that a Hellfire missile costs apx $100,000 but by utilizing our technologies, replacing it with a Mach 8-10 hypersonic missile of our physics/engineering and that missile would cost roughly $75,000 each delivered.
Materials used for these manufacturing processes are not disclosed, but overall, provides a foundation for extremely high stresses and thermodynamics, ideal for hypersonic platforms. This specific methodology and materials applications is many decades ahead of all known programs. Even to the extend of normalized space flight and re-entry, without concern of thermodynamic failure.
*Note, most entities that are experimenting with additive manufacturing for hypersonic aircraft, this makes it mainstream and standardized processes, which also applies for mass production.
What would normally be measured in years and perhaps a decade to go from drawing board to test flights, is reduced to singular months and ready for production within a year maximum.
Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle (U-TBCC)
To date, the closest that NASA and industry have achieved for turbine based aircraft to fly at hypersonic velocities is by mounting a turbine into an aircraft and sharing the inlet with a scramjet or rocket based motor. Reaction Engines Sabre is not able to achieve hypersonic velocities and can only transition into a non air breathing rocket for beyond Mach 4.5
However, utilizing Unified Turbine Based Combine Cycle also known as U-TBCC, the two separate platforms are able to share a common inlet and the dual mode ramjet/scramjet is contained within the engine itself, which allows for a much smaller airframe footprint, thus engingeers are able to then design much higher performance aerial platforms for hypersonic flight, including the ability for constructing true single stage to orbit aircraft by utilizing a modification/version that allows for transition to outside atmosphere propulsion without any other propulsion platforms within the aircraft. By transitioning and developing aircraft to use Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle, this propulsion system opens up new options to replace that airframe deficit for increased fuel capacity and/or payload.
Enhanced Dynamic Cavitation
Dramatically Increasing the efficiency of fuel air mixture for combustion processes at hypersonic velocities within scramjet propulsion platforms. The aspects of these processes are non disclosable.
Dynamic Scramjet Ignition Processes
For optimal scramjet ignition, a process known as Self Start is sought after, but in many cases if the platform becomes out of attitude, the scramjet will ignite. We have already solved this problem which as a result, a scramjet propulsion system can ignite at lower velocities, high velocities, at optimal attitude or not optimal attitude. It doesn't matter, it will ignite anyways at the proper point for maximum thrust capabilities at hypersonic velocities.
Hydrogen vs Kerosene Fuel Sources
Kerosene is an easy fuel to work with, and most western nations developing scramjet platforms use Kerosene for that fact. However, while kerosene has better thermal properties then Hydrogen, Hydrogen is a far superior fuel source in scramjet propulsion flight, do it having a much higher efficiency capability. Because of this aspect, in conjunction with our developments, it allows for a MUCH increased fuel to air mixture, combustion, thrust; and ability for higher speeds; instead of very low hypersonic velocities in the Mach 5-6 range. Instead, Mach 8-10 range, while we have begun developing hypersonic capabilities to exceed 15 in atmosphere within less then 5 years.
Conforming High Pressure Tank Technology for CNG and H2.
As most know in hypersonics, Hydrogen is a superior fuel source, but due to the storage abilities, can only be stored in cylinders thus much less fuel supply. Not anymore, we developed conforming high pressure storage technology for use in aerospace, automotive sectors, maritime, etc; which means any overall shape required for 8,000+ PSI CNG or Hydrogen. For hypersonic platforms, this means the ability to store a much larger volume of hydrogen vs cylinders.
As an example, X-43 flown by Nasa which flew at Mach 9.97. The fuel source was Hydrogen, which is extremely more volatile and combustible then kerosene (JP-7), via a cylinder in the main body. If it had used our technology, that entire section of the airframe would had been an 8,000 PSI H2 tank, which would had yielded 5-6 times the capacity. While the X-43 flew 11 seconds under power at Mach 9.97, at 6 times the fuel capacity would had yielded apx 66 seconds of fuel under power at Mach 9.97. If it had flew slower, around Mach 6, same principles applied would had yielded apx 500 seconds of fuel supply under power (slower speeds required less energy to maintain).
Enhanced Fuel Mixture During Shock Train Interaction
Normally, fuel injection is conducted at the correct insertion point within the shock train for maximum burn/combustion. Our methodologies differ, since almost half the fuel injection is conducted PRE shock train within the isolator, so at the point of isolator injection the fuel enhances the combustion process, which then requires less fuel injection to reach the same level of thrust capabilities.
Improved Bow Shock Interaction
Smoother interaction at hypersonic velocities and mitigating heat/stresses for beyond Mach 6 thermodynamics, which extraordinarily improves Type 3, 4, and 5 shock interaction.
6,000+ Fahrenheit Thermal Resistance
To date, the maximum thermal resistance was tested at AFRL in the spring of 2018, which resulted in a 3,200F thermal resistance for a short duration. This technology, allows for normalized hypersonic thermal resistance of 3,000-3,500F sustained, and up to 6,500F resistance for short endurance, ie 90 seconds or less. 10-20 minute resistance estimate approximately 4,500F +/- 200F.
*** This technology advancement also applies to Aerospike rocket engines, in which it is common for Aerospike's to exceed 4,500-5,000F temperatures, which results in the melting of the reversed bell housing. That melting no longer ocurrs, providing for stable combustion to ocurr for the entire flight envelope
Scramjet Propulsion Side Wall Cooling
With old technologies, side wall cooling is required for hypersonic flight and scramjet propulsion systems, otherwise the isolator and combustion regions of a scramjet would melt, even using advanced ablatives and ceramics, due to their inability to cope with very high temperatures. Using technology we have developed for very high thermodynamics and high stresses, side wall cooling is no longer required, thus removing that variable from the design process and focusing on improved ignition processes and increasing net thrust values.
Lower Threshold for Hypersonic Ignition
Active and adaptive flight dynamics, resulting in the ability for scramjet ignition at a much lower velocity, ie within ramjet envelope, between Mach 2-4, and seamless transition from supersonic to hypersonic flight, ie supersonic ramjet (scramjet). This active and dynamic aspect, has a wide variety of parameters for many flight dynamics, velocities, and altitudes; which means platforms no longer need to be engineered for specific altitude ranges or preset velocities, but those parameters can then be selected during launch configuration and are able to adapt actively in flight.
Dramatically Improved Maneuvering Capabilities at Hypersonic Velocities
Hypersonic vehicles, like their less technologically advanced brethren, use large actuator and the developers hope those controls surfaces do not disintegrate in flight. In reality, it is like rolling the dice, they may or may not survive, hence another reason why the attempt to keep velocities to Mach 6 or below. We have shrunken down control actuators while almost doubling torque and response capabilities specifically for hypersonic dynamics and extreme stresses involved, which makes it possible for maximum input authority for Mach 10 and beyond.
Paradigm Shift in Control Surface Methodologies, Increasing Control Authority (Internal Mechanical Applications)
To date, most control surfaces for hypersonic missile platforms still use fins, similar to lower speed conventional missiles, and some using ducted fins. This is mostly due to lack of comprehension of hypersonic velocities in their own favor. Instead, the body itself incorporates those control surfaces, greatly enhancing the airframe strength, opening up more space for hardware and fuel capacity; while simultaneously enhancing the platforms maneuvering capabilities.
A scramjet missile can then fly like conventional missile platforms, and not straight and level at high altitudes, losing velocity on it's decent trajectory to target. Another added benefit to this aspect, is the ability to extend range greatly, so if anyone elses hypersonic missile platform were developed for 400 mile range, falling out of the sky due to lack of glide capabilities; our platforms can easily reach 600+ miles, with minimal glide deceleration.

The Provo City Center Temple is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) on the same site as the former Provo Tabernacle in Provo, Utah. Completed in 2016, the temple utilizes much of the external shell of the tabernacle, all that remained of the original building after a fire in December 2010.
The intent to construct the temple was announced by church president Thomas S. Monson on October 1, 2011, during the church's semi-annual general conference. The temple was announced concurrently with those to be built in Barranquilla, Colombia; Durban, South Africa; Kinshasa, DR Congo; and Star Valley, Wyoming, along with the temple in Paris, France which had been previously announced. At the time, this brought the total number of temples worldwide (either completed, under construction or announced) to 166 and the number of temples in Utah to 16. Provo thus became the second city in the LDS Church to have two temples, the first being South Jordan, Utah, with the Jordan River and Oquirrh Mountain temples. It is the second tabernacle in Utah to be converted to a temple, the first being the Vernal Utah Temple, and the fourth LDS temple converted from an existing building. (The three previous being the Vernal Utah Temple, the Copenhagen Denmark Temple, and the Manhattan New York Temple.) It is one of only two LDS temples not to include the name of the state/province or country in which the temple is located (the other being the Salt Lake Temple).
The temple is located on the property where the Provo Tabernacle once stood. Historically, the tabernacle was used for church meetings and cultural events. In the early morning of December 17, 2010, a fire was reported at the tabernacle where firefighters found smoke coming from the building. At first firefighters thought that there might be a chance to save the roof and thus the outward structural integrity of the building, but at around 6:00 AM the roof collapsed. The Provo City Fire Department concluded that "[t]he most probable proximate cause of the fire ... is a heat source, specifically an energized 300-watt lamp, which was placed too close to combustible materials, specifically a wooden speaker enclosure."
During restoration process, February 2014
Monson stated that the temple will "include a complete restoration of the original exterior," and the artist's rendition in the press release includes the central tower from the original building. Jeffrey R. Holland presided at the groundbreaking on May 12, 2012.
During construction, the remaining tabernacle structure was fortified with six to 10 inches of reinforced concrete, combined with three rows of brick. It was supported on a structure of steel and concrete piles set at the planned altitude for the final building. Space for two below-grade stories was excavated before beginning work on the above-ground portions of the temple. The excavation went down 40 feet. With the water level between 15 and 20 feet, a large amount of water was removed in the process. Consistent with construction of most LDS temples, on March 31, 2014, a statue of the angel Moroni was installed on top of the temple.

This version utilizes a PIC16F876, but it's easy to port the schematic and software to other PIC's.
The MMC is connected to the SPI pins of the PIC via simple resistor voltage dividers to transform the +5V high levels to about 3.3V used by the MMC. The supply voltage for the MMC (2.7V - 3.6V) comes from a LD1086V33 voltage regulator (3.3V) or equivalent. It is possible to run the PIC at 3.3V, but then the AD converters are not as stable as at 5V. The data-out pin from the MMC goes directly to the PIC, because 3.3V is high for the PIC anyway... read more at: www.captain.at/electronics/pic-mmc/
Desperate times call for desperate measures; or creative utilization. In studio apartment (officetel) living, one room must have multiple functions; if not, failure is inevitable. In Bizwell Officetel, there are technically two rooms, and both serve many purposes in the process of survival. The main room is segmented into regions, whose functions are similar to the those of rooms in a house. The regions of the main room include; foyer, kitchen, laundry area, dining area, library, closet, garage/stable, and bed. The adjacent room, most commonly referred to as the bathroom, doesn't have regions because that would be physically impossible in such a small space. Instead, the 'bathroom' has many functions bundled into one space. Within these confines, the user can; shower, use the toilet, cut hair, and wash a bicycle.

NETL utilizes its melt lab facilities to create controlled chemistry alloys for further evaluation in our other facilities. Alloys are initially conceived and evaluated using computational thermodynamics. Once designed, the alloys are formulated from industrial purity remelt stocks. Melt operations include non-consumable vacuum arc remelting (VAR) melting up to a few pounds, consumable VAR and electro-slag remelting (ESR) melting up to 440 lbs, and vacuum induction melting (VIM) up to 50lb in this lab (up to 300# in another). Once melted, ingots are sampled for chemistry. Heats that are destined for deformation processing are given a computationally optimized homogenization heat treatment and machined prior to hot working.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
I create bodies of work that explore subjects such as gender, artifice, and spectacle. Utilizing processes ranging from directorial to curatorial to anthropological, I showcase exuberantly irrepressible personalities who revel in challenging clichés associated with constructs such "masculinity" and "femininity". A sampling of subjects include Girls Girls Girls (the world's first and only all-female Mötley Crüe tribute band), Tazzie Colomb (the world's longest competing female bodybuilder), and LACTIC Incorporated (an avant-garde clothing brand that takes the detritus of corporate life and reinterprets it into one-of-a-kind structural garments that challenge the polarization of gender).
With this current and ongoing project "Life is Drag", I am documenting the most innovative and singular performers of the currently exploding international alt-drag and neo-burlesque scenes. I am 3 years into this project, and so far have created 250+ portraits. These are created in my studio as well as during residencies - in New York City (The Cell Theater, Bushwig), Pittsburgh (The Kelly Strayhorn Theater, Blue Moon Bar, Bloomfield Garden Club), and New England (3S Artspace).
This project began in early 2019 in my studio in Brooklyn, when I collaborated with a local visual artist by the name of Untitled Queen - a deeply beloved, highly respected, and uniquely visionary performer and conduit within the NYC drag scene who uses drag as a part and extension of her artistic process. I then worked with selected performers from Ohio and Kentucky in conjunction with a mid-career retrospective in my hometown of Cincinnati in the spring of 2019, and in January and February of 2020, I worked with 20+ New England-based drag artists as part of a residency and exhibition at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
From the autumn of 2020 until the summer of 2021, I was an artist in residence at The Cell Theatre in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC, where I expanded the project in the midst of the pandemic to also include neo-burlesque performers and performance artists whose work deals specifically with gender performativity. Most recently was a residency in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio - which included creating video portraits of performers from the drag haus ODD Presents, members of the neo-burlesque troop Smoke & Queers, and other alt-drag and burlesque artists from the tri-state area. This residency also included an exhibition featuring this ever-growing archive, as well as multiple live performance events.
My long-term goal is to continue to do a series of such residencies nationally and internationally, which will allow me to create a comprehensive archive of video portraits of drag, burlesque and performance artists from a wide range of locations, backgrounds, cultures, and ages. Each portrait includes video of the artist performing (lip-synching, singing, telling stories, reciting monologues, dancing, etc.) in addition to interview documentation, and will live online as well as in galleries and unexpected places in between. "Life is Drag" has so far been exhibited at such venues as the the Carnegie Museum of Art and Bunker Projects (PA), Satellite Art Club, Bushwig and The Cell (NYC), 3S Artspace (NH), and the Weston Art Gallery (OH).
I believe this project is innovative and important in that it is treating and respecting "drag" (defined as broadly and inclusively as possible) as a proper art form – recognizing it as an extremely vital and valid style of performance art, and every bit as deserving of the deference reserved for more traditional classical art forms like painting and sculpture. Drag is painting and sculpture and performance all at once - and quite often also activism, education, protest, therapy, resistance, catharsis, comedy, tragedy, enlightenment, inspiration - or some combination of the above - to those who practice it, and also to those who experience it as an observer. This project is about celebrating this experimental and expansive form of art and its wide range of practitioners and manifestations. It is about creating a record - an archive - of these brilliant but ephemeral performances, from dive bars to art galleries, city streets to grand theater stages. It is about trying to properly document and share these wildly diverse acts and profound stories that will surely open minds and capture hearts.
