The Zygaenidae moths are a family of Lepidoptera. The majority of zygaenids are tropical, but they are nevertheless quite well represented in temperate regions. Some of the 1000 or so species are commonly known as burnet or forester moths, often qualified by the number of spots, although other families also have 'foresters'. They are also sometimes called smoky moths.
All 43 species of Australian zygaenids are commonly known as foresters and belong to the tribe Artonini. The only nonendemic species in Australia is Palmartona catoxantha, a Southeast Asian pest species which is believed to be already present in Australia or likely to arrive soon.[1]

Description
Zygaenid moths are typically day flying with a slow, fluttering flight, and with rather clubbed antennae. They generally have a metallic sheen and often prominent spots of red or yellow. The bright colours are a warning to predators that the moths are distasteful - they contain hydrogen cyanide (HCN) throughout all stages of their life cycle. Unlike most insects with such toxins, they obtain glucosides from the plants they utilize so that HCN can be used as a defence.[2] However, they are capable of making HCN themselves, and when in an environment poor in cyanide-producing plants, synthesize it themselves.[3] They are known to have mimicry complexes based on these toxins.[4]
Larvae are stout and may be flattened. A fleshy extension of the thorax covers the head. Most feed on herbaceous plants, but some are tree feeders. Larvae in two subfamilies, Chalcosiinae and Zygaeninae, have cavities in which they store the cyanide, and can excrete it as defensive droplets.[5]
Evolution
The fossil species Neurosymploca? oligocenica, belonging to the subfamily Zygaeninae, is known from Lower Stampian (Early Oligocene) deposits in Céreste, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France.[6] Lepidopterans with preserved structural coloration from the Eocene (~47 Ma) shales of the Messel Pit, Germany, are suggested to be zygaenids, and more specifically procridines due to wing venation patterns.[7]
Economic importance
The grapeleaf skeletonizer can be a problem in vineyards, feeding on foliage and can also be found feeding on Virginia creeper.

Colmanara Wildcat is an intergeneric hybrid consisting of miltonia, odontoglosum, and oncidium. It grows in a wide range of temperature conditions from warm to cool. The flower spikes emerge often twice per year and are colored in yellow, burgundy, and mahogany.
Light:
Low to medium. 1000-2000 footcandles. If this plant receives too much light the leaf tips will begin showing blackish spots. This is not abnormal for many intergeneric hybrids in the oncidiae group. Keep shadier in the summer and give it more light in the winter.
Humidity:
50% or higher is required. Humidity trays are helpful in maintaining proper humidity levels around the plants. Misting can be done in the morning as long as the plant leaves are dry by nightfall.
Water:
Use rain, reverse osmosis, or distilled water for best results. Water thoroughly being sure water is coming out all the drain holes of the pot. Water as the plant approaches dryness but do not allow it to become bone dry between watering. The pseudobulbs can be your guide. If the new pseudobulbs shrivel, this is a sign that you are not watering the plant enough.
Fertilizer:
If using rain, distilled or reverse osmosis water, use CalMag 15-5-15. If using municipal water with pH of 7.5 or lower, use GrowMore Ureafree 20-10-20. Use either at the rate of one teaspoon per gallon of water if fertilizing every third watering, or 1/2 teaspoon if fertilizing every watering. If fertilizing every watering, flush with clear water once a month.
I also highly recommend Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time I water.
Flowering:
This plant can flower more than once per year. The spikes very often branch when mature and can have up to 50 or more flowers per spray.
Repotting:
Repot this plant in the spring to early summer months after flowering. Utilize a mix which drains quickly yet retains moisture evenly throughout. I recommend a medium grade bark mix using Douglas fir bark, charcoal, perlite, with the addition of poultry grade peat moss or coconut husk chips. Keep dry for the first week to 10 days after repotting.
A Sunday stroll past flocks of sheep.
In comparison to other German states, Baden-Württemberg, along with Hesse, Bavaria, and Schleswig-Holstein, stands out as a focal area for sheep and goat farming. In Schleswig-Holstein, sheep are primarily kept on dykes to maintain a short turf and compact the soil with their hooves. In contrast, Baden-Württemberg predominantly utilizes extensive sheep breeds in migratory shepherding for landscape management. The sheep herds migrate to different grazing areas according to the vegetative season: in the summer, for instance, they graze on the orchard meadows and the sparse, dry grasslands of the Swabian Jura. Without the sheep, juniper heaths, sparse and dry grasslands, and sloping terrains would risk becoming overgrown with shrubs and trees. However, across Baden-Württemberg and the entire country, sedentary sheep farming prevails.

This is an image of Westlake Park, located in the city center of Seattle. During this time of year, the park features illuminated trees and constructed, life-size Christmas presents, ornaments, and trees through which people can walk! Apparently, over 80,000 light bulbs are utilized to light up the park!
The title of the image is a parody of the popular Christmas carol, "A Holly Jolly Christmas", because, as you can see, almost everyone in the image is practicing some form of social distancing. Whether this was a coincidence or not, it was intriguing to observe.
Due to the pandemic, the holiday mood and spirit are very much subdued this year compared to previous seasons -- as is probably the same case in cities and towns around the world.
Nevertheless, it was heartwarming to see many parts of the downtown neighborhood here in Seattle sparkling and glistening in spite of our circumstances.
My latest blog article features several festive images of Seattle during the holiday season this year: "Happy Holly Jolly Holidays!"
Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Festivus, and a healthy, safe, peaceful, and restful holiday season!

Increasingly, these spheres took on an aspect of "Abstract Surrealism", something Max Ernst was a master of. His work in this area, toward the end of his life, is largely ignored and an over-looked body of extremely important art. At least I think so.

Fungi are manifest in a multiplicity of folktales and fairy tales, and in folk remedies and rituals. They appear as foods, poisons, diseases, decorations, dyes or tinder, and even in insults, compliments, graffiti and video games. These and other impacts of fungi on folkways are here concisely reviewed under categories likely to interest professional and amateur mycologists and accessible to the lay reader. The evolution of popular perceptions of fungi is sketched from Shakespearean times through contemporary European and American cultures. Provided are specific instances of how different cultures utilized or avoided fungi, responded to fungal diseases of crops or humans, or viewed fungi in the context of popular belief, superstition or religion.
The design and operation of a windmill depended on various characteristics of the wind such as wind speed and changes in wind speed, wind direction and changes in wind direction, wind turbulence, and the height of the wind above the ground. An average windspeed of 15 to 25 miles per hour and a prevailing wind were necessary for operation of a mill. The critical component of a mill's operation was the sails. The force of the wind on the sails caused them to turn and rotate the axle, or windshaft, on which they were set. The brake wheel, located inside the top of the mill, also was attached to the windshaft, and its movement drove the millstones and all other machinery inside the mill.
Mills usually had four sails, but five, six, and eight-sailed mills were also built. The earilest sails were wooden, cloth-covered frames known as common sails. They were light and powerful but had to be stopped for the miller to furl the sails. As windmill design advanced, the cloth sails were replaced with sails with shutters. In 1807, William Cubitt invented a sail which could be adjusted while the sails were turning. The shutters of this sail could be opened and closed automatically and worked like venetian blinds to aid in utilizing the wind. A windmill's sails had to always be square into the "eye of the wind" as the mill was designed and balanced to resist pressure from the front only. If a mill was tail-winded, the cloths or shutters could be blown out, the cap blown off, or the mill itself blown over, often with the miller in it. Because the wind changes, the mill had to be capable of being turned into the wind whatever the direction. This was called "winding the mill." The turning gear was the tail pole, and bodily force was used to effect the turn.
I often utilize the Ferries for transportation, and this time was parked by an opening. Guarding against the splash, and 90 degrees to the sun, gave my polarizer an optimal angle. I then worked on a presentable composition between the waves created by the Ferry and the snow peaked mountains. The wave became a leading line with snow capped mountains, the destination.

The next to join us on the stage is MISS SL ♛ Romania, Abbie!

MISS SL ♛ Romania tells us, "The Zodiac sign i have chosen for this competition is Aquarius. In Latin, it translates to 'Water Bearer,' and it is the eleventh astrological sign in Western Astrology. The reason I have chosen this sign is when researching, I found that I can relate to many of its qualities, even though I myself am a Gemini. My styling is partially inspired by the Dutch designer Iris van Herpen. Her designs are a form of futuristic Avant Garde, made possible by intelligent use of fabrics and 3D printing for some unique styles. I have used the element of water as a base for my outfit, with the water flowing around my skirt. And of course, what water bearer would be caught without something to carry the water in."
MISS SL ♛ Romania is wearing a bodysuit, skirt, sleeves, and leg chains from Ersh. She adds shoes from KC Couture, jewelry from Orsini and Michan, and makeup from both Goreglam and Identity Faces.
Finally, she utilizes water around her skirt, a headpiece, and nails that she has created herself to help complete her ensemble.

During the realization of the Rotterdam Market Hall (2014) emotions flared. The hall would economically disrupt the nearby street market and mess up sightlines. Well, it probably still does the latter, but it proved to be no problem for the street market - the two customer bases were sufficiently different.
Covered market halls can be found in many cities in the world. But due to the fact that apartments straddle the Rotterdam one, makes is quite unique. The 228 apartments are draped over the market in a horseshoe form. In the hall itself (6200 m2 there are about 100 sales units food stalls and food shops and several restaurants including a supermarket. Design: MVRDV. The Void Remains - by Dirk DZIMIRSKY - 2016
Charcoal/acrylic on canvas
Dirk Dzimirsky is a German artist best known for his hyper realistic drawings depicting human beings in a dark mood, thus revealing the vulnerability and tragedy present in their condition. He utilizes the interplay of light and shadow combined with extreme detail to create a melancholy mood in his images. In translating photographs into drawings, he wishes to go beyond merely recreating a single instant in time and instead create a photographic snapshot representing the culmination of his life experiences with others, succinctly encapsulated in the subject’s gaze (comment from Pixelelco - reddit webpage)

Just got back from our last camping/photography trip of the late summer season. It snowed on us! I'll be trying to catch up today on all the great photos from my friends and family! :)
I just got a new landscape lens for my birthday, a Canon, of course. :) We went to Mono Lake basin to try it out. I love this shot because of all of the textures and colors. The white "tufas" sticking out of the water make for great contrast and objects of interest.
Mono Lake is a very special lake, with a very unique ecology. Native American Indians called this place home, and utilized the brine shrimp that thrive in the salty mineral water. Mono Lake is ringed by ancient cinder cones (volcanic cores) and natural hot springs. Learn more about unique Mono Lake here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_Lake

After months of discussing the logistics of making this happen with Steven, and his coordination with GLC, when it finally happened we had something that neither of us planned on: A makeshift lake. After getting insidious amounts of rain the previous 48 hours to the tune of 5 inches, all that rain had no where to go except collect in the yard for us to utilize. With lights staged and pushed to the limits, limits I have never taken them to before, the calm wind made the perfect setting.

Thankfully only having one track of 40 cars and kicking out one bad order, train BP2 was able beat the evening sun after waiting for its turn out of Blue Island Yard.
Engineer Nick Justice wastes absolutely no time getting up to track speed, skirting across the diamonds at Blue Island JCT and the Cal Sag Channel in run 8 with the GP40-3 rebuild twins (IHB 4011/4013) bound for Union Pacific’s Proviso Yard. After 4 years, this pair is still looking as fresh as ever, as these units are two of six on the roster with PTC. After being assigned on the 115 Burns Harbor Turn that utilizes the NS Chicago Line for the past 3 years, they’ve recently been taken off since CP/Metra is making all Harbor trains into Bensenville Yard initialize PTC for the past 2 months…something that’s been a thorn in my side this year as they don’t always run to Proviso where they don’t need PTC and would use Harbor power. The past couple Bensenville trips in recent weeks have ran with foreign power, as Blue Island Yard doesn’t always have their PTC units around…something that should change here in the near future. The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad (YMSPRR) is a historic 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railroad with two operating steam train locomotives located near Fish Camp, California, in the Sierra National Forest near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park. Rudy Stauffer organized the YMSPRR in 1961, utilizing historic railroad track, rolling stock and locomotives to construct a tourist line along the historic route of the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company.
Service began with the purchase of three-truck Shay locomotive No. 10 from the West Side Lumber Company railway of Tuolumne, California. Built in 1928, No. 10 was recognized as the largest narrow gauge Shay locomotive—and one of the last constructed. After his retirement in 1981, Rudy Stauffer was succeeded by his son, Max, as the railroad's owner and operator. In 1986, the YMSPRR purchased Shay No. 15—also a former West Side Lumber Company locomotive—from the West Side & Cherry Valley Railroad tourist line in Tuolumne.
The two steam locomotives operate daily during the summer months, while the railroad's Model A "Jenny" railcars, capable of carrying about a dozen passengers, typically handle operations during the off-season. Passengers can ride in either open-air or enclosed passenger cars.
The large four-winged flying fortress utilized by the Torumekian military of the Nausicaa movie and manga. The ship features a large lower cockpit with space for several crew as well as a rear troop deployment space and several turrets toward the front and back. The Corvette is shown to be quite agile for its size and ancient mechanical components, but maneuvers tend to come at the cost of the lives of some of the crew.
I've wanted to make this vehicle for over two years, and I'm really glad that it's finally finished. The model has a wingspan and length of over two feet, and I hope to bring it to some Lego expos this year. Thanks for looking!
Composite artwork created 05-17-23, utilizing 21 layers in Photoshop 2023.
When I began creating composites to use on my blog from 2004 to 2013, most were cobbled together using "found" images from the internet. In 2015, after I bought my first DSLR, I vowed never to create any composite artwork that didn't use my own photography.
Over 200 of these images are featured here on Flickr in my Composite Artwork folder.
As I see more and more digital artists using AI programs such as DALL-E, Wombo Dream and Bing Image Generator, I am conflicted about whether to even call this original art since a lot of the images seem to be completely created in those programs.
I decided to give some of these programs a whirl, and settled on Bing Image Creator to create two of the elements in this image which I have never photographed.
The architecture is from a photo I recently took at The Huntington's Chinese Garden. The mountain is created from a photo I took at Arches National Park. The eyes and the castle were "created" by typing instructions into the Bing
Image Generator. I wanted "eyes with teeth" to be suspended from the portals, and I wanted a castle on a rocky mountain. The generator gives multiple choices. And I refined the instructions till I got what I was envisioning in my head.
I used the AI images just as I do with my own photos, subjecting them to various filters and making adjustments in Aurora HDR and Camera RAW.
I've adapted my "signature" which will always have "art photography" when compositing is utilized, to read "art/AI"
It took quite a few hours to make this little gem I call "Eyes of the Future".
Utilizing several textures including Lenabem-Anna J.'s texture "402" flic.kr/p/2hKVajT Thanks
Many thanks for faves & comments, they're much appreciated :-)
The creaking of rails and the resounding rumble of GE motors echo through Natural Tunnel as CSX trackage rights coal load C090 snakes its way through. They're are framed as they exit the south portal of the tunnel, making their way south for unloading at the massive Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN.
Natural Tunnel is a massive naturally formed limestone cave located in the Natural Tunnel State Park near Duffield, Virginia. The 850 foot long, 80 foot tall and up to 200 foot wide tunnel was carved over thousands of years as groundwater slowly dissolved the limestone. The railroad has utilized this natural oddity to haul traffic through the mountain since 1893 when the South Atlantic and Ohio railroad constructed the first tracks through the tunnel. This line would be a connecter from Bristol, TN, to Big Stone Gap, VA and the coalfields of southwestern Virginia. The line was later assumed by the Virginia and Southwestern Railroad 1899 and was dubbed the “Natural Tunnel Route”. The Southern Railway would acquire controlling interest in the line in 1906 and would run the "Lonesome Pine Special" until passenger service ended in 1939.
In 1967, The Commonwealth of Virginia purchased the property and the Natural Tunnel State Park was opened to the public 1971.
Natural Tunnel has been a tourist attraction for over a century and is one of the most iconic shooting locations for railroad photographers in the Appalachian Mountains. Today it provides passage for NS and CSX trains via Norfolk Southern’s Appalachia District.
If you live around here, you have this shot. A must see, the Snoqualmie Falls are a magnificent and easily accessible sight, made even easier recently with a nice viewing platform at the top and, ahem Stephenie, a parking lot at the bottom.....
I actually cropped quite a bit off the left of this and full disclosure lowered the exposure by one half stop everywhere except the falls utilizing Lr's radial filter. I didn't want to raise the exposure on the falls but I wanted the focus to go to them so, there it is. :-)
Try to utilize playing the different layers of single color as a metaphor of faded love, when love was away, one's heart would be lost , just like the flowers faded out , the color faded away.
In the serene woodlands of Hacienda Montecristo, near the culturally rich Santa Rosa de Copán, I captured a tender moment between an Azure-crowned Hummingbird, Saucerottia cyanocephala, and her fledgling. This photograph embodies the essence of a mother's care, set against a backdrop where the verdure of Honduras unfolds in harmony with the simplicity of these birds' existence. The adult's vibrant azure crown, a stark contrast to the juvenile's developing plumes, speaks volumes of the life stages that I, as a photographer, am privileged to witness.
Utilizing a shallow depth of field, I sought to crystallize the duo's interaction while allowing the lush environment to softly blur into bokeh, highlighting the birds as the focal point. The diffused lighting of the canopy gently illuminated the iridescence of the mother's feathers, while the careful composition preserved the integrity of their natural behavior. This image is not just a visual record; it is a story of survival and continuity in the avian world, a narrative I strive to share through my lens. ©2022 Adam Rainoff

While exploring the many geographical formations on the Miller Point trail, I encountered a cathedral formation in the valley. This one was not as massive as similar formations in some national parks, but still impressive. I instantly knew what I would be focusing on photographing while I was on the trail, and in the end, I had quite a few keepers of the sandstone spire.
For most of my images, I used the vertical relief of the rock formation to make it look bigger, but at the same time, I kept my eye out for something I could use to anchor my foreground. Most of the exciting foreground subjects were in the shadows, and I was getting desperate as the sun started to go down. In the end, I utilized some minor ridges far away as the foreground and used a 30mm focal length instead of the wide shot I originally planned.
The natural barriers of this place tend to keep people away. I've only seen a few photographs from this location, and although it's very well known, the challenges of the closest nearby town starting at 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). This definitely presents challenges for most people that would probably confront altitude sickness if going straight here from sea-level. The air is thin, and trekking feels like you're perhaps trying to hold your breath while hiking every 5 breaths. Interestingly, as remote as this place feels and is, there are plenty of villagers utilizing the pasture land to graze sheep, goats, cows, horses, donkeys, and a variety of water fowl seem to sustain here as well. In fact, I believe this area is not parkland, or protected, but the local people do make sure you pay to visit. Although I visited in August, which might be considered peek trekking season because of the fair weather, I'd suggest going in May or June to get the after effect of the wet season producing flowers, and green pastures. I searched for many miles to find flowers on some of the 4,800 meter hills surrounding the peaks, and there was nothing to be found to work with except rocks, and dry fields. This location, even in the dry season has some finicky weather, and it got very cold - which means very cold when coming from a guy use to spending lots of time in the arctic and alpine. This particular photo is a stich of shots from the air, with a launching point high on the hills surrounding.

Have you noticed that sometimes aspen seem to be watching us?
This is a composite, slud quite a bit in Lr and then in Ps.
The original, seen below in the first comment box (and if that comment doesn't show, hitting the browser's refresh button should do the trick), is an intentional camera movement image.
Using a pretty slow shutter speed, and panning the camera vertically created the original image.
The result of sliding in Lr is the next image in the first comment box. Clarity and Vibrance sliders were utilized. Tone curve sliders were adjusted.
At the same time that I had created the intentional camera movement image, I had also made some standard still images of this group of aspen.
In Ps, I composited in bits of the same trees from the still image, using masks, then sliding opacity.
I've often talked about using luminosity alpha channels to constrain adjustments to areas based on luminosity. I had created those channels and used them to increase contrast only within the mid tones, leaving the brightest and darkest tones untouched from the version created in Lr. Googling for Tony Kuyper's tutorials will give lots of wonderful information.
Lastly, I felt that the image was too far toward the yellow and green end of the color temperature range, so a photo filter adjustment layer was added with a magenta filter at the top of the Ps layer stack. And of course its density and opacity sliders were adjusted.
I hope your sliders sunday is going well. I haven't been able to be online much in the past few weeks. Work has been extremely busy. I've been needing to go in early and so have been unable to post to groups and properly view and comment on photos. So I haven't felt right about posting and running. Been getting home late after work and so haven't even had time to be working on photos. We've been helping friends move. We've had friends in and out of the hospital.
So today is especially appreciated. I haven't gone in to work, I'm staying home, and I get to now go visit the sliders sunday pool and see the intriguing images everyone has posted!
hss!

Originally placed in service in 1870 and rebuilt and strengthened during 1916-1919, the Pennsylvania Railroad bridge at Louisville, KY, is quite the sight to see. Seen from the floodwall on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, this northbound CSX train utilizing trackage rights over current owner-operator Louisville & Indiana gives one a perspective as to just how large this bridge is. Spanning the Falls of the Ohio, the McApline Dam, Shippingport Island, and finally the Louisville & Portland Canal, the span is almost a mile in length. When river levels are low, one can walk out on the fossil beds located in the lower right corner. If river levels are up, flooding and other incidents can occur, and acute viewers might notice two barges on the left that broke loose from the moorings and crashed into the both the dam and the bridge piers. It will take several months for the salvage company to extricate the barges from this spot.
New Topographics photographers utilized document style image making " to provide a format for the emerging ecological consciousness" which was evolving in the 70's.
Indeed many interviews show "they were not environmentalists, but rather they simply were artists making pictures in places that interested them."
