The temple has several features to be appreciated. The main complex houses ten thousand miniature gold Buddhas. The Buddhas are housed on shelves throughout the complex. The grounds also host a seven story stupa utilizing authentic Chinese architecture. But the real treat lies within the stupa, a 5 story tall bronze statue of Buddha. The Buddha is a truly awesome work of art that needs to be see

If you ever travel to the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, one of the many attractions available to you is Kayaking. In this case we went out with a group utilizing double Kayaks and toured about from 6pm to 10pm. And yes, that meant the potential for wild life viewing on the ocean, a colored sunset, and Kayaking in the dark. We were treated to all that and more. In addition, the water was almost dead calm. I joked with the others that we were the one's making waves as we travelled along at about 4M/H.

In this shot, we arrived at one of the many islands along the way staying more in an inlet than actually travelling out along the ocean. A shot I otherwise could never have, this one is from our Kayak as we peacefully floated enjoying the quiet, stillness, and the pleasures of nature. And, if you look very closely into the shot, you will notice a tug boat just off the shores of the lighthouse. We watched as both it and the log boom it was towing made its slow, inexorable way down the channel.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas (Spanish: Valle Sagrado de los Incas; Quechua: Willka Qhichwa), or the Urubamba Valley, is a valley in the Andes of Peru, north of the Inca capital of Cusco. It is located in the present-day Peruvian region of Cusco. In colonial documents it was referred to as the "Valley of Yucay." The Sacred Valley was incorporated slowly into the incipient Inca Empire during the period from 1000 to 1400 CE.

The Sacred Valley is a major tourist destination. In 2013, 1.2 million people, 800,000 of them non-Peruvians, are estimated to have visited Machu Picchu, its most famous archaeological site. Many of the same tourists also visited other archaeological sites and modern towns in the Sacred Valley.

Stretching from Pisac to Ollantaytambo, this fertile valley is irrigated by the Urubamba River. The Chanapata civilization first utilized this area starting at around 800 BCE because of the rich soil used for agriculture. The Qotacalla civilization lived in the Sacred Valley from 500 to 900 CE. The Killke civilization then lived in the Sacred Valley from 900 CE until the Incan Empire took over the region in 1420. The Incan Empire ruled this area until the arrival of the Spanish. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Valley

Exposure, is there a right one? I often utilize my histograms and the theory of ETTR. (Expose To The Right) However, that does not always render the most ideal image, even when manipulated in post. This shot was slightly underexposed and shot in RAW. The result better reveals the suns rays than the one with the right histogram. Perhaps it is best to keep on learning,

As the heavens prepare for an imminent downpour, nature paints a breathtaking scene in the mountains of Tuscany.

Italy experiences a period of intense rainfall as dark clouds dominate the sky. The relentless downpour transforms the landscape, turning streets into temporary rivers and fields into saturated patches of earth. People navigate through the rain, seeking shelter and utilizing umbrellas and raincoats to stay dry. The heavy rainfall showcases the power and unpredictability of nature, reminding us of our vulnerability in the face of natural forces.

I utilized the occasion of that sometimes sunny weather today...

I've taken lots of photos over the years of this bridge from this vantage point at the Knoll Hill Little League park.

Usually I'm not shooting the bridge from inside the ballpark, but outside the fence on the other side of the knoll. This shot is at 85mm from the street, utilizing the zoom to bring the bridge closer. I really like the way this turned out.

Fungi are manifest in a multiplicity of folktales and fairy tales, and in folk remedies and rituals. They appear as foods, poisons, diseases, decorations, dyes or tinder, and even in insults, compliments, graffiti and video games. These and other impacts of fungi on folkways are here concisely reviewed under categories likely to interest professional and amateur mycologists and accessible to the lay reader. The evolution of popular perceptions of fungi is sketched from Shakespearean times through contemporary European and American cultures. Provided are specific instances of how different cultures utilized or avoided fungi, responded to fungal diseases of crops or humans, or viewed fungi in the context of popular belief, superstition or religion.

Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.

These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.

I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.

Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Overblaak, Kubuswoningen, Blaakse Bos (slightly cut)

The `Kubuswoningen` (Cube houses) aka the `Blaakse Bos` (Blaak forrest) have the phycical appearance of a set of cubes, flipped to one of their vertexes and placed on variable height pillars. It was designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom (1934-1999) who followed his structuralist agenda here, trying to create an integrated urban living space (`Living in an urban roof`' it was called) that both stimulates/facilitates the communal spirit of the dwellers of this urban forest and create a strong rhythmic architectural pattern in the process. In `A structuralist's embrace` here there’s more about Dutch structuralism.

The 7Artisans fisheye was utilized again here. The lens‘ album is here.

For an architecture shot like this, minimalist music is called for, but in this case let’s settle for the basic drumwork of the Cure’s Lol Tolhurst in A forest.

Please accept my apologies for the quality of this image. It leaves a lot to be desired. I am posting it simply for what it includes. We are standing on the highway overpass at the east end of Norfolk & Western’s yard in Crewe, VA on January 13, 1974. A yard job was switching with GP38AC No. 4137 and a GP9. With that established, let’s move from left to right.

In the upper left is a scrap yard operated by N&W. Retired cars were cut up and loaded into gondolas for shipment. Some equipment was reclaimed for reuse and shipped to other locations for reconditioning. The wooden cabooses above the 4137 were stored awaiting scrapping. They would be set off the track to the far left, torched, and the remains scrapped. The shack between the 4137 and the scrap yard was utilized by yard crews and car inspectors.

The east end of the yard can be seen above yard job. The left side was principally for eastbound traffic, the right side for westbound. Note the coal staged to go east. Almost all coal trains had to double their train together before departure.

The two tracks to the right of the yard job are the main line tracks. The shack in the center right is for the switch tenders. There weren’t any power switches. The switch tenders appeared to handle everything at the throat of the yard and on the mainline. The switch tender can the seen in the bottom center of the image. To say the job was physically demanding would be an understatement.

In the upper right is the engine terminal. One track was for the wreck train and three for the locomotives. At this time most trains swapped engines at Crewe.

The circle is a building complex in the Kloten airport in Zürich. It offer a vast utilization mix of corporate embassies, hotels, offices, medical clinics, schools and gastronomy covering more than 180.000 sqm.

The woodpecker in the image is a female just outside her nest cavity in a dead tree.

The red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is a medium-sized woodpecker of the Picidae family. It breeds in southern Canada, northeastern Mexico, and the northeastern United States, ranging as far south as Florida and as far west as Texas. Its common name is somewhat misleading, as the most prominent red part of its plumage is on the head; the red-headed woodpecker, however, is another species that is a rather close relative but looks quite different.

Look for Red-bellied Woodpeckers hitching along branches and trunks of medium to large trees, picking at the bark surface more often than drilling into it. Like most woodpeckers, these birds have a characteristic undulating flight pattern.

Red-bellied Woodpeckers are common in many Eastern woodlands and forests, from old stands of oak and hickory to young hardwoods and pines. They will also often venture from forests to appear at backyard feeders.

Though the species is not globally threatened, it depends on large trees for nesting. In areas that are extensively deforested, the birds will sometimes utilize gardens, but for the most part simply will not be present in any numbers. – Wikipedia

Just got back from our last camping/photography trip of the late summer season. It snowed on us! I'll be trying to catch up today on all the great photos from my friends and family! :)

I just got a new landscape lens for my birthday, a Canon, of course. :) We went to Mono Lake basin to try it out. I love this shot because of all of the textures and colors. The white "tufas" sticking out of the water make for great contrast and objects of interest.

Mono Lake is a very special lake, with a very unique ecology. Native American Indians called this place home, and utilized the brine shrimp that thrive in the salty mineral water. Mono Lake is ringed by ancient cinder cones (volcanic cores) and natural hot springs. Learn more about unique Mono Lake here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_Lake

After a relentless summer of cloud cover in western NC, I finally got back to the telescope. Amazing that all the gear still communicated properly... and more so that I remembered how to use it! This was taken through a monochrome astro camera, utilizing RGB and luminance filters. Over 7 hours combined for the full integration.

This is a reflection nebula illuminated mostly by a single star near the center of the glow, with darker surrounding dust. A bit more from NASA:

Reflection nebulae glow because they are made up of extremely tiny particles of solid matter, up to 10 or even 100 times smaller than dust particles on Earth. These particles diffuse the light around them, giving the nebula a second-hand glow that’s typically bluish (like our sky).

The image was built up using a multitude of stellated mirrors but "Consummation", while still using mirroring, is patterned more with right angles. Some may see 'Crosses' and 'Stars of David' and wonder if there's a covert religious message here. There isn't. It is all about shapes and visual relationships ... nothing more. Besides, both the stars and the crosses are truncated in certain places, so they really bear no connection to religious icons. 6 Point stars and cross shapes exist in many Non-Abramic cultures. Art in the service of pure Abstraction is the intent here.

Again, I indulged in the play between symmetry and asymmetry. When utilizing previous images in these collages, elements and features of those pieces still show, which adds to the interest of the finished "Extreme Mirror" work. Bits of line, text and parts of discernible images peek through. And one is hard-pressed to find where one element, shape or graphic begins and another begins. Layers are deliberately mixed and layered in such a way that very little has total dominance. These pieces then, weave back and forth between fore, middle and back grounds. This falls in line with my view that no single, fixed view of reality can be the total picture.

Storm clouds break over the Broadacres Farm near C

Carnation, WA. This historic dairy farm is on the National Register of Historic Places

Six years after they were married, William and Estella Adair bought 110 acres in the Snoqualmie Valley next door to her parents place near the community of Vincent which lies northwest of the current town of Carnation in Kings County Washington. In the early years flood and shifting river channels caused them to abandoned there home and establish a new place on their property to the south. In 1915 they built a farmhouse in the Craftsman style. William set about replacing his temporary structures with more permeant ones. In 1922, Will Adair constructed a hay bam using the new bow-truss roof configuration. He was among the first Snoqualmie Valley dairymen to build such a bam which was designed to maximize the interior volume of the hay loft. Other farmers quickly followed Adair's example and today many barns in the Snoqualmie Valley utilized this design. High on the barn's north end, in bold black letters below the hay door ,were painted the words “Broadacre Farm-1922” This is the first time this name for the farm appears in public Will Adair milked his 55 cows by hand until he retired in 1945.

In the photo the building in front of the barn is the Milkhouse and Milking Parlor. It was built in the late 1940s after peter Sinnenas bought the farm. This complex of four adjoining buildings were altered by Peter’s son Ed over time as milking technology and size of herds changed. The milking parlor was one of the first in valley, and the additions date from the 1970s to 1990s. The complex is attached to and functionally integrated with the 1922 hay bam.

A significant place utilized by the Snuneymuxw people for thousands of years and traditionally known as Saysutshun, Newcastle Island is a wondrous escape from the bustling urban center of Nanaimo just across the harbour.

Alongside the strong First Nations presence and culture on the island, it is also home to many rich histories which include coal mining, a sandstone quarry, and herring salteries, all of which make Newcastle Island a must-see eco-tourism destination for those visiting Nanaimo.

When I began creating composites to use on my blog from 2004 to 2013, most were cobbled together using "found" images from the internet. In 2015, after I bought my first DSLR, I vowed never to create any composite artwork that didn't use my own photography.

Over 200 of these images are featured here on Flickr in my Composite Artwork folder.

As I see more and more digital artists using AI programs such as DALL-E, Wombo Dream and Bing Image Generator, I am conflicted about whether to even call this original art since a lot of the images seem to be completely created in those programs.

I decided to give some of these programs a whirl, and settled on Bing Image Creator to create two of the elements in this image which I have never photographed.

The architecture is from a photo I recently took at The Huntington's Chinese Garden. The mountain is created from a photo I took at Arches National Park. The eyes and the castle were "created" by typing instructions into the Bing

Image Generator. I wanted "eyes with teeth" to be suspended from the portals, and I wanted a castle on a rocky mountain. The generator gives multiple choices. And I refined the instructions till I got what I was envisioning in my head.

I used the AI images just as I do with my own photos, subjecting them to various filters and making adjustments in Aurora HDR and Camera RAW.

I've adapted my "signature" which will always have "art photography" when compositing is utilized, to read "art/AI"

It took quite a few hours to make this little gem I call "Eyes of the Future".

The creaking of rails and the resounding rumble of GE motors echo through Natural Tunnel as CSX trackage rights coal load C090 snakes its way through. They're are framed as they exit the south portal of the tunnel, making their way south for unloading at the massive Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN.

Natural Tunnel is a massive naturally formed limestone cave located in the Natural Tunnel State Park near Duffield, Virginia. The 850 foot long, 80 foot tall and up to 200 foot wide tunnel was carved over thousands of years as groundwater slowly dissolved the limestone. The railroad has utilized this natural oddity to haul traffic through the mountain since 1893 when the South Atlantic and Ohio railroad constructed the first tracks through the tunnel. This line would be a connecter from Bristol, TN, to Big Stone Gap, VA and the coalfields of southwestern Virginia. The line was later assumed by the Virginia and Southwestern Railroad 1899 and was dubbed the “Natural Tunnel Route”. The Southern Railway would acquire controlling interest in the line in 1906 and would run the "Lonesome Pine Special" until passenger service ended in 1939.

In 1967, The Commonwealth of Virginia purchased the property and the Natural Tunnel State Park was opened to the public 1971.

Natural Tunnel has been a tourist attraction for over a century and is one of the most iconic shooting locations for railroad photographers in the Appalachian Mountains. Today it provides passage for NS and CSX trains via Norfolk Southern’s Appalachia District.

I have purposefully posted this landscape immediately after yesterday's landscape to highlight the similarities and differences in landscape photography.

'New Topographics' tenants utilize a straight forward approach. Striping away the extraneous, and focusing on the beauty and simplicity of humanity's intrusion upon the land. Avoiding the picturesque it brings formality, and focuses on the conscious awareness of 'space'.

I was lucky with the harsh sunlight which Robert Adams used when he photographed his series in Colorado.

To achieve this effect I shoot through a vintage glass Wratten 5N5, 3x3 inch filter, then post edit with 'Photoscape' black and white tool.

The Lotus flower (Nelumbo Nucifera) holds great significance in Thai culture and Asia.

In Thailand, the lotus is revered as a sacred flower closely linked to Buddhism. It represents purity, enlightenment, and spiritual awakening, flourishing beautifully even amidst muddy waters.

The pink hue of this lotus signifies reverence and is commonly utilized in religious offerings or ceremonies.

Photographed in a lotus pond from a paddle boat.

The natural barriers of this place tend to keep people away. I've only seen a few photographs from this location, and although it's very well known, the challenges of the closest nearby town starting at 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). This definitely presents challenges for most people that would probably confront altitude sickness if going straight here from sea-level. The air is thin, and trekking feels like you're perhaps trying to hold your breath while hiking every 5 breaths. Interestingly, as remote as this place feels and is, there are plenty of villagers utilizing the pasture land to graze sheep, goats, cows, horses, donkeys, and a variety of water fowl seem to sustain here as well. In fact, I believe this area is not parkland, or protected, but the local people do make sure you pay to visit. Although I visited in August, which might be considered peek trekking season because of the fair weather, I'd suggest going in May or June to get the after effect of the wet season producing flowers, and green pastures. I searched for many miles to find flowers on some of the 4,800 meter hills surrounding the peaks, and there was nothing to be found to work with except rocks, and dry fields. This location, even in the dry season has some finicky weather, and it got very cold - which means very cold when coming from a guy use to spending lots of time in the arctic and alpine. This particular photo is a stich of shots from the air, with a launching point high on the hills surrounding.

This is from my new set, "Automatic Photography," so called because like Automatic Writing I utilize many different software programs on my realistic photographs and let Spirit lead the way into these abstractions.
