The ancient castle of Carpiano near Gubbio in Italy dates back to 10th Century. Having subsequently been abandoned for many decades, Riccardo & Marilisa Parisi discovered the old hamlet in 2001 and immediately fell in love with that "pile of rocks". Beyond the careful and stunningly beautiful restoration of its buildings, they have also created the "Borgo di Carpiano" - by far our favourite place to take a holiday and "un-plug".

We were warned that the seagulls were nesting on these rocks. The closer we approached, the louder they squawked. So we gave ground and left them to their business. But we did notice that they were among the largest and healthiest seagulls we had every seen. They looked like fattened chickens next to the seagulls of downtown Toronto.
