Love is noise. The noise of pleasure and wounded flesh, the sounds of the impacient belly where your head rests, and the murmur of bus conversations over a long distance call. The hammering of blood in your brain trying to scream ‘always’ and ‘never’ at the same time.
And if love is noise, the opposite to love has to be silence. Maybe that is why, since Hector gave me that last kiss on the forehead, like a child who deserves no explanations, I hadn’t been able to unplug my earphones.

I was chatting a bit with a long time client and friend today about our awesome opportunity to make it over there last year. For me, anytime I get a chance to actually leave the country is in essence, a license to unplug from any real responsibility. I guess I have a bit of a split personality. Although I am an entrepreneur and need to be running my own ship for most of the time, it sure is nice to jump of the gang plank and abandon ship. I can remember bumbling about Europe a few years ago during one of my first trips over there. Just before leaving, I let Carl (the guy I left in charge) know that I would check in often. Well, 3 weeks later, I finally got around to checking in. I kinda miss those days without internet and cel phone. Kinda hard to REALLY escape these days. There's must be some place thats virtually unreachable on this planet. Guess I gotta do a little more work finding that place perhaps....LOL!
Ah yes, the feeling of wanderlust....

This is what today looked like. At least the parts when Lily and Anya weren't taking off in different directions to explore the sitting room, poke the television, or perhaps climb the stairs. Or clamber over family members, unplug the laptop, or dance to music. It's been a busy day!

While hiking, I have been seeing a growing number of people taking only a brief view of the surroundings and then burying themselves in their electronic devices. This ongoing project highlights the need to re-examine our need to unplug and just enjoy the beauty of this world.

Well I tried to post this first thing this morning but we've been plagued by gnarly non stop storms here for days,REALLY starting to get on a plugged-in-the-wall comp users last nerve. Log on,type 2 sentences,thunder starts,unplug comp for 6 hours. Repeat. Guess I need a cordless laptop if I'm gonna live in Tornado Alley!
Here's the first item in my crazy good birthday MAD PAK,and yeah,I freaked! The fact that it included Roosevelt Franklin and The Count,as well as BOTH Bert & Ernie,was a huge joy. Thanks Michele!

The worst thing that could happen almost happen today; I was downloading some photos to my newly bought external hard driver when it suddenly stopped responding! I could access any files! I rebooted my computer in hope of mercy but now the computer didn't even find the hard disk! Damn I thought, I've lost all photos I had taken between December 25 until date, including these firework shots!! (I have made backups of everything else on another disc luckily ) I tried to unplug the power to the driver and, *pof*, it started working again! Woohoo! I did a quick backup so now I'm all set, don't now if I'll ever trust the disk thou..
It's been a wonderful, lazy week off for Sassy and I. Yesterday, I don't know what I was thinkin', I decided to hard wire a switch for the heat lamp in the dogs kennel area in the garage. We always had it plugged into a extension cord and often times didn't unplug it when they came back into the house. Pain in the ASS but goterdone. Today, it was house cleaning in the morning. The kids are coming over for a early new year get together. I've got a sweet prime rib slow cooking on the Weber and then a salmon fillet to throw on the grill a little later. Twice baked potatoes and asparagus. That leaves us tomorrow and Sunday to be lazy sloths together, once again, before I go back to work on Monday.
I haven't been out taking pictures much lately so this is one from the archives that I liked and thought would be fun to process. Had my D90 and my all in one 18-200 lens with me while I was walking the dogs last June. What a delight it is to have a place like this, not far from home, to walk the dogs, and get some exercise. Spring is on the way!

Not the best capture but I wanted to show my solution. In the past 4 days, we've had a low of -10, second coldest day in Oregon history (my area of Oregon). Even with the heat lamp, ice crystals are still forming on the top of the solution at 9 degrees F. I was amazed to find them at the feeder the morning of -10, that they had survived the night.
They feed from the warm side until it gets around 20 degrees. Once I see them on the other side of the feeder, I unplug the lamp.
Life is what happens to us when we are busy making other plans, or so it's been said. Maybe so, but 2014 came at me so fast, I'm not certain it left time for me to make other plans.
I've run a photoblog for my own amusement for over five years now, and each year I end it with a post of my favorite images from the previous year. I'm not certain, but I suspect 2014 is the year in which I've taken more photos but shared fewer than any other. Instead of a re-hash of 2014, I'd rather share a few words of wisdom, newly gained (but surely not new). Aimed at my fellow photographers, I think there's something in them for each of us.
WHY?
Though I've done this for five years, the reason I pay to host a blog has changed substantively over that period of time. So too has changed my feelings toward the broader online photography community, what it has to say, what it values, what it produces, etc.
Photoblogs, photo rumor / news sites, photo pundits, photo communities, social networks are everywhere suffused with mediocrity: gear reviews, best business practices for photographers, "why I switched to camera company A," ceaseless re-hashes of the basic pedantic explanations of camera operation, and so on. It is an echo chamber - you can enter this photo enthusiast / professional world and keep yourself busy all day, every day, and never speak to another soul outside of the echo chamber.
Why bother? Why do you spend time with a camera? Just to make a few pretty pictures, or is there a narrative you're laboring to deliver? What story does your work tell?
Unplug from the echo chamber, even just for a bit - unsubscribe, unfollow, ignore. Your story will be the richer for it.
ONWARD TO 2015
Last year I ended 2013 with a series focused on the twisted and magnificent pines that rim the Grand Canyon:
I remember the way the canyon begins and the south rim ends. It ends in mausoleum silence punctuated by the crunch of boot on fresh powder.
This year I remember the way the year ends, with my footfalls matched by Oliver's on Candoglia marble. We walked past candles, tourists, and Saint Bartholomew Flayed to the stairs beneath the choir. We walked down into the crypt.
Saint Carlo Borromeo lay interred behind us, but our attention was upon a bright blue reliquary shining forth through its case and cage. Oliver asked me, with the irreverence only a toddler can conjure, "What's that?"
How to answer? Every answer from direct to evasive would equally have been a lie. In the end I don't know what I said, something close to "an object that people in the church believe is very special."
When we came to Borromeo, he posed the same question. Though I doubt he understood any of what I said, I was nevertheless heartsore to say, "Remember when we lived in California? Well a long time ago a man named Junipero Serra built a small church along the cost and named it after the person who rests here."
We ascended the steps to regain the square, I bought some almond torrone, and Val and Henry had their chance inside the Duomo. As we ate, I reflected on my path from California to here, on the threads of history and fate that enshrine the globe and that can whisk me from the crypt of the Duomo to my uncle's memorial in Serra's church, the smell of the incense, the way that wind beat the fog onshore afterward. The world is too much with us, late and soon.
So again doing another quick 365 before i get cracking with some revision have a bio exam on monday, Eeek....

1. Host a Green Party
Get your friends together for an Earth Hour eco-party. Fire up the flashlights and battery lanterns, serve organic food, avoid the disposable utensils, use natural décor (like flowers and hanging plants) and have a friend provide acoustic music. Talk to your guests about how you're each reducing your environmental footprint and share ideas and solutions for saving more energy, money and carbon dioxide.
2. Give Yourself an Energy Makeover
Use Earth Hour to make your home more energy efficient: Replace your old light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs; install power strips (so you can turn computers and electronics on and off more easily); and change your air conditioner filters. Or go one step farther and install one new energy-efficient item, like an EnergyStar qualified DVD player. And on Monday, call your local utility and sign up for green power-like wind, hydro or solar.
3. Go Green with Your Kids
Earth Hour is a perfect time to talk to your kids about the environment and why we need to protect our planet from the dangers of climate change. Check out books on the environment from the library and read by flashlight, or head into the yard and have a night picnic. Or how about a night of board games? 4. Do a Recyclables Scavenger Hunt
Get your flashlights and scour your cabinets and shelves for cans, bottles and cardboard (like cereal boxes) that you don't normally recycle. Make a list of all the non-recyclable containers you're using now (like plastic shopping bags and butter tubs), and figure out ways to reduce your consumption of items that end up in landfills. One easy tip: get reusable grocery bags... and reuse them!
5. Green That Workspace!
Working the night shift? Even if you can't turn off all the lights at work, look around and see what you can unplug, turn down or use less of (like consuming less paper by printing double-sided). Every day millions of computer screens and speakers are left on overnight--shut 'em off! And talk to your coworkers about what they can do to help make a difference, too.
6. Involve Your Local Leaders
If your city or town isn't hosting an Earth Hour event, ask your local government to set up a community "green" discussion this spring. Help organize attendance by reaching out to local environmental and community groups, and come prepared to ask your leaders what they're doing to make your city greener.
7. Clean Up Your Neighborhood
Grab a flashlight and take a long walk through your neighborhood, picking up trash and recyclables as you go. It's a great chance to do some stargazing, too!
8. Unplug and Chill Out
Most of our daily activities--like watching TV, shopping online and texting friends--require loads of electricity, but do we really need to do so much stuff all the time? Take one hour for yourself to just chill... turn off the screens, put down the handheld devices and just take some "you" time to reflect, read or talk to your family. After all, why do more when you can do less?
9. Take Your Temperature
Your thermostat and your refrigerator are responsible for a huge portion of your carbon footprint. If you lower your thermostat by just 2 degrees and set your fridge to 37 degrees F. and the freezer at 0 degrees F., you'll make a big difference.
10. Make a Pledge for the Planet
Earth Hour shouldn't end at 9:01 pm--it's a chance to take a first step toward lowering your overall impact on the environment. So use part of that hour to make a personal pledge to do more--recycle, drive less often, turn off or unplug electronics, and beyond. The only way we're going to stabilize our climate is if we make real changes in our everyday lives. That change begins with Earth Hour, and ends with a healthy planet.

Very solid setup. Notice the power supply charging the battery I installed inside the pier. A 14ah gell cell battery fits nicely on the top alloy stanchion inside the pier. Unplug the charger connection, plug in the mount connector and you're ready to go 12 hours on a charge.

The Pemberton and District Community Centre will be hosting an Unplug and Play event on Sunday, May 1 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm as a kickoff event to Screen Free Week.
The event is geared towards creating awareness for families on the importance of balancing technology use with time with family, creative pursuits, recreation and nature. Children today are increasingly connecting to technology and disconnecting from themselves, their close relationships, and nature. Parents are encouraged to participate.
I almost took this shot with my phone but then thought "Wait, my Barbie film camera makes more sense." :)
I hope everyone gets to unplug for a bit this weekend and get out into the fresh air and find something pictureful to enjoy! ox

Deboxing the Rapunzel Feature Doll. Rapunzel's inner box slides out from the bottom, not the top of the box. First you have to detach the 'try me' switch from the front window by undoing two layers of tape. Once freed from the tape, it can be pushed back through a hole in the box to fall inside the box. The other end of the switch plugs into a socket in the back of the doll, and is detachable once the doll is deboxed. Then the doll is removed from the box, still attached to the inner backing. The backing can free stand, and now the doll is in the clear. Next the doll is removed from the backing. She is still attached to the plastic supports and the Try Me button, and there is tissue paper under her skirt. All the plastic supports have been removed. I left the lantern tied to her hand with clear rubber bands. The Try Me button is still connected to the doll by a long wire, and the tissue paper is wrapped tightly around her waist. To remove them we have to open up the back of her dress. We see the top of the tissue paper and the wire goes under it. To remove the tissue we slip the bodice off her shoulders and move her dress down, so we cut the tape at the top of the tissue wrapping. Then the end of the wire is exposed, where it plugs into a socket in the waist of the doll, below the battery compartment. We unplug the Try Me button's wire, and we can now use the lantern to make the doll sing the full length of her song.
The recently released Disney Store Deluxe Feature Rapunzel Doll. She is part of the line of new 16 inch singing Princess dolls for 2015. They not only sing, but each also comes with an accessory and have other special features. They also come in a sturdy reusable box with a satin carrying handle. They are available online and in stores in North America, and cost $49.95 each. Rapunzel I think is the most impressive doll in the line, and the most different from previous singing dolls of the same character.
Once the 'try me' switch is detached, you trigger the sound and lights by sliding the lantern back and forth a little way along her hand. There is a LED light in the palm of her hand that flickers while she is singing, and lights up the lantern. She sings about 35 seconds of the 'Healing Incantation' song very clearly and just the right volume. The sound is better than any previous DS singing doll that I have heard. The gentleness of the song, with accompanying lights, and the beauty of the doll, makes for a very moving experience. I don't think I will get tired of hearing the song and seeing the lights on this doll.
I found out today that an old friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer. She's 38, a wife, and a mother. My prayers and thoughts go out to her and her family for the battle ahead. Ladies, please do those self-examinations if you don't already do those.
I know 2016 is almost over, but I'm honestly looking at the next few days with a little bit of paranoia and dread. What a year.

of course as i am heading out the door to work out (hence the hair), my new computer arrives. way to kill my entire day. but i decided to be good and go work out first, while my old computer backs up onto time machine since it keeps reminding me i havent done it in 91 days. thennnnnnnn macbook pro here i come! i need a name for it. from anchorman. as all my electronics are named. maybe i'll just name is anchorman. thats manly.
ps great timing for a new computer. photobooth is being really weird with its videos, anddd when i plug in the charger, it says not charging. so it keeps dying if i unplug it. funn.

That being said, its been really great taking a few hours here and there to really unplug, hang out with my little one, and bumble about the local arts and music festival. Although the music hasn't really been my cup of tea, the precious time spent with a loved one is what its been all about for me. (guess I'll have to head to Europe to catch the music I REALLY want to hear LOL!)

My basement flooded a couple of winters ago, and this workspace became unusable. Even the fume hood blower (lower right) succumbed to water damage. Over the past week, I've salvaged the usable raw materials, bought some new materials, and hacked the motor on the blower to make it work again. I removed the motor's rusted out centrifugal switch and replaced it with an external 1-second time-delay relay. This hack works because the motor isn't subjected to variable loading that might cause it to stall; once it's up to speed, it stays there until I unplug it.

I tried to rename the ext to .mpg they wouldn’t rename. I tried to use a bulk rename utility but it didn’t see the files… Twighlite zone. I see the files and the media player plays them. I want to cut them but do not understand.

THE LAPTOP RECEIVED GARBAGE. But I am wondering why Bella can send me the same thing and it was OK on Laptop when yours wasn't. So it is not you.

It’s a sugar coated version of XP that conflicts with my video editing programs. Microsoft has made it harder to move files with no “move” feature. They have taken away the windows picture viewer and gif images don’t work without extra software.
The switch to box wouldn't let me switch mto moizilla on a download for an upgrade to snagit.

Installing windows 7 signature edition on 32 bit and 64 bit. I had to wipe the 32 bit because 7 wouldn’t recognize windows 7 RC. Install of fresh 7 took About 40 minutes. From Vista 64 bit 7 copied and saved programs and data of @ 400gb on my lt and @ 80 programs in @ five hours! That was nice!

A wipe did not fix the ati glitch on a reinstall.
Windows 7 changed back to windows 7 basic color scheme and the tuner came back on. I had just plugged the tuner into Laptop 2 64bit vista and ati 650 worked. Then all of a sudden the tuner started working again on my 7 lt. Weird coincidence.

Uninistalling Roxio and using a windows basic or Aero theme in Display settings then re-installing the 650 program over the existing install made the 650 work for me again. I dare not mess with Windows TV tuner!
For those with simple need that don’t need a TV tuner I sugest Windows 7 Ultimate. For those willing to troubleshoot your ATI tuner I also suggest Windows 7 Ultimate!

A clean uninstall of the 650 then re-install AFTER re-installing roxio fixed it so far.It’s working with roxio now. Roxio’s TV tuner and the ati tuner are working. If you put in ati first before Roxio then Roxio won’t let you install ati.
Hp 7350 photo printer won’t work with hp laptop 64bit and 7 desktop 32bit. No compatible drivers I have found so far have helped.
I can’t figure out how to sort icons in Quick launch with 7.
As you may already know, I'm a cyborg. No, really! I've had medical equipment implanted in my body not once but twice to manage chronic migraine headaches.
The equipment, called a spinal cord stimulator, consists of electrical leads in the back of my neck, wires running down my spine, and the main unit in my lower back. All of the equipment is inside my body and not visible from the outside, but I do have an x-ray of the leads and wires.
Like any piece of electronics, in order to function the main unit in my lower back must stay charged. I recently received requests for a photo of the device I use to charge the main unit. So here it is!
The rectacular "brick" is a battery pack. Most of the time, it is plugged into the wall. When I'm ready to use it, I unplug the brick from the wall and attach the black cable and paddle shown. Then I place the paddle against the skin of my lower back and turn on the brick. Power runs from the brick, through the cable, and into the paddle, through my skin, and into the main unit under my skin. Lighted icons on the brick indicate if the brick has power, if the paddle is positioned properly, and when the unit is completely charged.
The charging process is not painful in any way, and I do it at a frequency of once a day to once a week, depending on how I'm using my implants.

I am surprised that my eyes are open in this shot, as I have been walking around half asleep all day. I fell asleep in the car like three times today while I was out shopping with my mom. Anyway, we went to Barnes & Noble. I didn’t allow myself to buy anything though because they didn’t have what I REALLY wanted, which is Andrea Gibson’s book Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns. So, I guess I will just have to suck it up and order it from bn.com.
I was really disappointed about them not having the book in stock but THEN, my day was completely brightened up when I found this sweet necklace at Bob’s! I have been searching for a peace sign necklace for a while and FINALLY found one to love. Which, by the way, this shot is for Angie because I was telling her all about my necklace and she wanted to see it. :)
That’s about it. I’m watching Everybody Loves Raymond now and about to update my MySpace since I rarely bother. Add me if you have one! :)

Today was the first day of a new initiative at church called the "hardware co-op" which provides a computer recycling and re-use solution for the congregation.
The EPA has a good explanation of why this important.
We are going to re-use what we can and recycle the rest through Recycle Force in Indianapolis.
We will extend the option to drop off e-waste to more people as resources permit. I hope to grow the idea by documenting what we are doing in a way that other organizations could easily replicate it.
