I have been using my MacBookPro as my only production machine at work for about 3 weeks now and love it. I just plug it in to a 20" monitor in the mornings and unplug and take it with me in the evenings.

This power injector actually worked really well. But as expected, it broke apart after some plug & unplug of the cables.

I've had an idea in my head for an image with a striped background and curvy subjet, but haven't been able to find something that will give me the kind of background I want. I decided to unplug my Lacie external drive and use it's case to create the lines. I'm not totally happy with how it turned out, but I fugured I put in the effort so I might as well post the result.

Tumblr

During our sinkhole tour the night of 5/01/10 Jason Collard and I stopped at Warehouse sink. I expected to see the sinkhole filled with pooled up water the same as the last two sinkholes shown. However, this is what I saw instead.

The water is rushing directly into the swallet of the sinkhole, and (based on my prior knowledge of the this streams morphology) I could see that the stream had downcut considerably.

Three days later, after the flood waters had subsided, Jason Collard, Lee Pearson and I accessed Trash Compactor cave via this entrance.

This entrance is likely only accessible intermittently. Stream cross-sections of the creek, collected by Dr. Evan Hart of TTU, shows the sink collecting silt and backing up, alternating with times of deep down-cutting within the silt.

A few hypothesis could explain the cycle. It could be that a cave collapse unplugs the cave to accept more water and downcuts the silt making it the cave accessible. An alternative explanation could be that the stage of water in the sinkhole provides the necessary pressure to force water through a choke or to break the choke and then continues to downcut the silt.

In 2004 a dye trace by Dr. Peter Li and Dr. Hugh Mills of TTU connected Warehouse sink to Capshaw Cave. See TDEC karst study of the Cookeville area, Putnam Co., TN.

This power injector actually worked really well. But as expected, it broke apart after some plug & unplug of the cables.

Bags of trash litter the lawn of Robinson Hall to promote The Zero Waste Challenge. We asked fans on Facebook about their sustainable practices, and here's what a few said:

"Use your own mug if you can, those cups add up. And unplug things when not in use... that's about 10% of our national residential energy consumption a year!"

"Turn off the lights when you leave the room! And reduce the amount of water you use by taking submarine showers (rinse, turn off the water, shampoo, rinse, etc) or just take shorter showers. Make sure not to leave the water running while you brush your teeth."

"Also only do full loads of laundry - for me this is only once every two weeks! Save time, money, effort, water AND energy."

View On Black

From our Toronto evening gathering on August 4th, we then travelled via Ontario Northlands train to South River, Ontario.

From South River, some walked and drove, and the rest of us biked the 22-km route into the forest to the beautiful Northern Edge Algonquin resort. What an absolutely beautiful venue for Unplug'd.

For those who may take the bike option in the future, just be sure to remember to keep a little energy stored in your reserve tank for the uphill finish at the end. But it is a beautiful ride, well worth it!

Note: The photos in this collage are from my Unplug'd11 (CC) Flickr set, and were selected for a blog post co-authored with Kim Crawford.

LOLA Day 47

September 22, 2014

I must be fighting something, because I feel completely run down. So tired at work and according to this photo I am turning yellow, lol. The train is always a funny place. People push and shove so that they can get a seat, because you know, they are so tired from sitting a their desk all day. It's hard not to notice what people do on their phones; open email app, refresh refresh, nothing new, scroll down through existing message, refresh again, close mail app. Check text messages, nothing, look around, send someone a text, wait for response, no response, send another text. Close phone. Less than 30seconds later open phone and repeat. Look at pinterest, close app, immediately open it again, close it and immediately open yet again. Close and refresh email a couple times, nothing new.

This is literally what one girl was doing over and over for 30 minutes. She was looking at maternity photos on pinterest, so I try and see if she has a baby bump....... can't tell, i don't think so. Then next thing is to look for a ring, dang can't see that either. Should I ask her if I am one of the first people to know she is pregnant?

Then I decided to watch all the other interesting characters on the bus. Ohhh the people. I think about how much time they waste non-stop opening and closing their phones and wonder what they would think if they could see how often they check it and have no new messages and mindlessly open an app just to close it again right away. I think I am not like that.

Then right near the end of the bus ride I get a seat (YAHOO!!). Soon as I sit down I pull out my phone. Just a quick check, hmmm only a couple of message. Hmmm no new emails........ okay lets just check facebook real quick. Scroll through, not much new since the last time I checked. Close the app... WAIT what was that? Open the facebook app again, oh it was nothing. Close the app again.Oh wait I forgot to check, no, turn my phone off. Ding, oh I have a message, turn it on again. I would like to be able to just see how crazy I look with my phone usage........ or would I?

I really need to focus on unplugging more. I really won't miss much and if I do, I am sure it won't take long to catch up. I generally try to spend my time on the bus reading or listening to a book, but I can definitely get caught up in texting or obsessively checking random apps over and over again on my phone. Time to break that bad habit. Sorry friends if I don't respond to text messages right away. If it is urgent, please call me.

Quotes for today:

― Bill Maher

*The more ways we have to connect, the more many of us seem desperate to unplug.

I got this idea and directions from School for Us.

Put shaving cream on a baking sheet. Spread it out.Add drops of food coloring and smear around with toothpicks or forks. Place a piece of paper on top and press down. Lift up paper and scrape off shaving cream with a spatula. Then wipe clean with a cloth or paper towels. Paper dries fast!

"Gonna write myself a letter

about where I've been and why

Settin' down what really matters

if i can just get the words right

when we met i told you my story

and i sat rapt when you told yours

made our lives about us

some inarticulate perfect glory

laid our rocks on the opposite shore

walk this lonely road

carryin' this stone

looking for some place to rest these weary bones

tell our stories

and sing these songs

and we'll create a place we might belong

i think a lot about the place i'm from

where the forest meets the sea

even if you're from Ontario or Arizona //(ontarizona?)

you might feel the same as me

so what's your flag mean?

who's on your currency?

what's your sport at the Olympic games?

don't we share something between all of us?

and where you're from

did they give it a name?

...

look out across the ways

where Tom Thompson painted

strum some chords on a golden spruce

take these smoke'n mirrors we're made of

see if i take home some truth

...

we'll create a place we might belong"

The Matrix may very well be my - or one of - my favorite films. I don't remember when I saw the first one. I can vaguely remember going to see Reloaded with my parents in the theaters. That I remember, and though I didn't really understand a lot of it, I loved the action scenes as well as the music. Don't remember when I saw Revolutions.

I decided to write this post because...I've been meaning to for years. This trilogy actually means a lot to me, I have a lot of personal attachment to it. Truth be told, I actually do not hate the two sequels like everyone else. I like them. I recognize the flaws, but I like them. The entire story that was told - I loved.

And contrary to what many seem to believe, yes, the Wachowski's knew exactly what they were doing with Matrix: Reloaded and Matrix: Revolutions. They weren't just making this up as they went along, they knew what they were setting up from the very beginning - and everything that happens is deliberate. And I'll explain why throughout this post, where I'll mainly be discussing the first film.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});

The first movie is simple enough, right? It is pretty much a good vs. evil story, that's how it's given to us. Thomas Anderson/Neo is a lonely computer hacker, who is questioning reality...and is curious about this thing called the Matrix. He doesn't know exactly what it is, but he wants to know, there is something in him that is dying to know. Neo knows something isn't right. He can feel it. And he gets that message on his computer screen, telling him to follow the white rabbit. This is Trinity talking and Neo is aware of who she is and the fact that she is a hacker.

Neo is looking for Morpheus. He has the answers Neo is looking for. And thankfully, Morpheus gets a hold of him at his office while he's at work. The mechanics of the plot are actually moving fairly quickly, early on in the film. No time is wasted, which is really, really good. The Agents are after him, they know that Morpheus and Trinity are looking for Neo.

Neo is finally able to meet Morpheus face to face. And the red and blue pills are presented to him. In addition to a brief explanation of what the Matrix actually is. Laurence Fishburne's performance is just stellar. Rewatching the movie, I completely forgot how good he is in this role. The wardrobe, the glasses, his cadence, everything is great.

They're able to pinpoint his location in the human birthing chamber-place, and bring him into the real world. Furthermore, Morpheus actually shows him what the Matrix is: a massive computer program. A neural interactive simulation, designed by the Machines to use humans as batteries.

And this is the war. There is a small group of those who are resisting and fighting against the Machines. With this "prophecy" that claims the One will bring about the destruction of the Machines. I put that in quotation marks for a reason. Later on, Neo is brought to see the Oracle. An old Black woman - which is, actually, quite telling. Because believe it or not, the Oracle is the most important person in this entire trilogy.

In the car, as they are driving to see her, Neo asks Trinity if she has ever spoken with the Oracle. He asks what she told her and Trinity is about to tell him, but, they arrive at their destination, thus cutting her off. What the Oracle tells Trinity is extremely important and radically vital to the plot of all three films.

In the Oracle's apartment, there a bunch of children present, all whom have the potential to be the One. Which is why they're there to see her. They're all kids, which is important to remember, because freeing a mind once it has reached a certain age can be problematic. You always get 'em while they're young.

The Oracle displays her importance just within a few moments of meeting Neo. She tell him, "don't worry about the vase." Neo then knocks over a vase. She tells him, "what's really going to bake your noodle later on is...would you still have broken if I hadn't said anything?"

It feels like a nice little joke, right? But this is crucial. Most people seem to completely miss it, I know I did for several years. With that one throwaway line, she illustrates what she is capable of. The power of influence.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});

If she can change the future simply by saying something to someone, that's something that could be taken advantage of. That's a lot of power to have. All this means is, you should pay very close attention to everything the Oracle says in each movie. See, when she takes Neo's hands to look at him...she says that he has the gift, but "it looks like you're waiting for something." The Oracle doesn't tell Neo outright that he isn't the one. He says it first, and she seemingly confirms it by saying "you have the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something."

So Neo walks away from this scene thinking that he isn't the One. Later on in the film, he has to make a choice to hack back into the Matrix to save Morpheus from Smith. The Oracle tells him this will happen. Since he doesn't believe he is the One, there is no pressure. He's just another guy. So he decides to go back into the Matrix and risk his life. This is also just a tactic used to play out that question until the very end of the movie. Where it's more effective, after everything Neo has been through.

They had to do the Jesus thing where they kill him and bring him back to life. Thomas Anderson dies, and Neo is born, thanks to Trinity. I know the love angle here may be laughable or terrible to some, and I get that. It's cheesy. But, symbolically, I like it. And it just sets in place the very element that is necessary to ultimately winning the war. That's revealed in Reloaded. There are plenty of little easter eggs in this film that connect to the other sequels. They can incredibly difficult to notice. One of them appeared in the first act of the film. When Smith first captures Neo and brings him in for question, or whatever he was doing.

These screens. This is a very specific transitional shot, and it's not random. These screens are something you'll see in Reloaded, when we meet the Architect. Neo is being watched. Another key thing to point out is the fact that the Agents' jackets have gold inner-lining. Yellow or gold. This color scheme is also important. The green tint of the Matrix, the more blue tint of the real world and then this yellow/gold. This is more evident in the sequels, specifically Revolutions.

The Matrix can hold many different meanings for different people. Several interpretations can be made. The Jesus/Buddha symbolism is obvious and very much on the surface. But there are even deeper layers of symbolism and meaning. One that I picked up on points out that the Matrix is representative of the mind. The real world/Zion is representative of the body. And the Machines are representative of spirit. Mind, body and spirit. This is hinted at in this first film, when Neo fails the jump program. Crashing on the pavement, checking his bloody mouth when he unplugs inside the Nebuchadnezzar. Neo says to Morpheus that he thought it wasn't real - how could I get hurt in the Matrix and end up hurt in real life? Morpheus tells him the mind makes it real and "the body cannot live without the mind."

Fun stuff. There is symbolism like that scattered all throughout these three films. But what does the mind, body soul thing really mean? Well, these three domains are separated, fragmented, in a sense. They're at war with one another. They're not whole, they're not connected. And, any spiritual person knows that mind, body and soul/spirit need to sync, right? They can't be at war with one another. With that symbolic framework in perspective, the events of the next two films make a bit more sense...

I managed to cram my desktop, UPS, Altec Lansing 2.1 Speakers and other accessories into this 2.5' x 2' table.

The cool thing is, it's done without using any power strip or extension cord, there's nothing sitting directly on the floor, and I can move the whole setup around by just unplugging the one cord that plugs into the mains :D

August 28, 2011

Well, after the advance warning/hype/worry that felt endless, Sunday brought Hurricane Irene to Central NJ for real. We lost power sometime after 2am on Sunday and it was out the whole day. I didn't really see any crazy rain, although the winds seemed to increase mightily as the day went on. But our bright apartment showed its worth; Dan read all day, and I did a LOT of crafts before reading myself. Our new laptop's crazy battery life meant that we could watch a movie once it got too dark to read or craft, and all in all? The power outage was really kind of enjoyable. And the fact that our new place has a gas stovetop meant that we got to eat pasta for dinner. You know, to go with all of that beer we drank, because we surely couldn't let it go skunky.

The time: 2:00 PM December 1st. The place: Hwy 12 between Napa and Fairfield. I'm driving along happily minding my own business when I notice smoke coming out of the cigarette lighter where I plug in my iPod adapter. I immediately unplug the adapter but smoke continues to come out. The button next to the lighter is also smoking and melts away. Now I can see actual flames behind the lower dash. I'm swatting ineffectually at the smoke and flames while driving on the busy road. There is no place to pull over. It went from "I need to put this out" to "I need to bail out" in about as long a time as it takes you to read this. As flames begin licking up the dash and melting everything I finally spot a place to pull over. I hastily pull into someone's driveway. The dash is now engulfed in flames. The car is going to melt down to the tires if I don't do something so I did the classic thing: I began waving my arms to flag down some help. As I'm calling 911 on my cell I look up and here comes a truck driver running up with a fire extinguisher and he puts out the fire for me. Thanks dude! The Cordelia FD and the Highway Patrol arrive a few minutes later. I'm okay but my car is fucked.

I got home that night and did some research. Turns out there's a recall on the iPod adapter I was using due to fire danger from a faulty washer. I was not notified of any recall on the item. Because I was not injured I do not have the standing to file a product liability lawsuit. The way this works is that Allstate pays me off for my losses on the car and then turns around and goes after Belkin to recoup. I am working closely with my insurance agent to see that she takes a chunk out of Belkin's hide. See the attached pictures. The last picture is a closeup of the faulty washer. Notice the burn and scorch marks. And that's my story!

My first Miles Davis CD republished in 1997. Get this CD mainly for my favourite track "So What".

Found that there is an "Alternate Take" recording (track #6) for the song "Flamenco Sketches" (track #5) (Miles Davis, pianist Bill Evans and others). According to the "Kind of Blue" album introduction, all music artists didn't play the sketched (draft) music notes before the recording day, they refined the "sketches" at the studio and then started recording. Rotated instruments at some sections at each "take". So all takes having a similar structure but different in detail. I played these two tracks on my computer at the same time (I should play them at two stereo systems on my left and right) and found that they have significant variations in transitions, loudness, and length of some sections. Like live jazz players extend the notes or jam in in a different timing to make each play unique.

Recalled my "Chris Botti in Boston" CD also including this song in a live performance, there are new arrangements for the piano, sax, drum, electronic guitar, and bass, and of course with digital recording and mastering that made the Chris Botti's version a massive jazz jam sounds glamour.

Back to the original "Flamenco Sketches" recorded in 1959, performed with the same kind of music instruments but sounds like an "unplug version" in contemporary terms. This 56 years old masterpiece was arranged like today's music, this is one of Miles Davis' timeless pieces base on his "Group Improvisation" concept.

BTW, this CD is the second best remastered copy of all "Kind of Blue" copies next to the gold Mastersound edition. All previous LPs and CDs were reproduced from slightly faster master tunes. So songs on this CD are true-to-life and right on keys. Louder and richer in tones.

I've taken my 360 to the next level.

So for the past couple of months I have been watching videos off my computer on my Xbox 360. This was wonderful and all but it came at a price. The 360 only supports Mpeg-2 and WMV files for some sick reason so I had to jump through many hoops to turn an .avi file into a WMV file. First I had to use a program to encode the avi into an mpeg because the other program I was using couldn't perform the task of encoding avi directly to wmv. So once I had my mpeg (a process that took almost 2 hours) I could start encoding that into a wmv using Sorenson Squeeze. Not only did this step take an ungodly amount of time (at least 9 hours) but it strained my aging computer to where I couldn't perform any other tasks on it besides that one without it lurching to a near dead-stop and produced files of over 1.5 gb in size for each step. Because this took so long and took up so much space, I was juggling the processes on mine and Shelby's computers. However, because Squeeze uses the same cd-key (ahem) it wouldn't allow the two programs to run at the same time on my network. So because of that, I had to unplug Shelby's computer from the router thus cutting her off the internet for hours at a time. This severely limited my opportunities to perform the encoding process.

And to kick a guy while he's down, for some unknown reason after I would transcode the avi to a mpeg, the audio became out of sync. This occurred on both computers and I never did understand why. I even uninstalled and reinstalled codecs, drivers, programs, and files but to no avail.

Once this began, I decided to scrap the whole thing and graduate to something better.

I got XP Media Center.

However, like everything else in our stupid lives, we have to work for sweet things. Installing Media Center meant a fresh install of XP and a clean wipe of my hard drive. I, um, borrowed a friend’s copy of Media Center but had to burn it onto a DVD. Now I'm a bit behind the times so I'm new to the whole DVD burning thing. I got some DVD-Rs and looked forward to the future. But wait, I needed DVD+Rs to burn this OS. Son of a.... So that delayed me a bit as I had to get some new discs but once that was done with I had to move all my files off of my computer. I've accumulated a lot shit it seems over the past few months so this took quite a while as I had to rearrange and juggle in order to get it all onto Shelby's computer and her laptop.

Time to begin installing! Almost there!

No, wait, my DVD-ROM drive is a POS and doesn't work anymore. Of course. Time to cannibalize Shelby's computer! So I have to open up her tower and yank out her drive and put it in mine. I unfortunately bought her the most awkward computer desk imaginable so all the cords running to the back of her tower are already stretched tight and the computer won't move an inch out of its enclosure. So I have to basically hang upside down and use an extraordinarily large amount of energy and muscle to unplug each cord.

Now to install! Oh, it fails and freezes up a few times for reasons unknown to me. Now it's about 3:30 in the morning so start it off one more time and go to bed. Wake up in the morning to find that it actually worked while I wasn't watching it! Huzzah!

Now I had to put Shelby's drive back in her computer after which I did the stupid thing of having too much confidence in my technical abilities so I attach everything and place it back in it's awkward cubby without testing it. The computer won't boot. It gets stuck on "Checking NVRAM..." Oh god, I've seen that before too many times. Do not tell me I fried her motherboard somehow.

My punishment for over-confidence is to hang upside down again and battle with the computer desk from hell.

Turns out I didn't push the IDE cable in far enough. Grr.

That was the worst of it though. Aside from Media Center taking at least an hour to add all my media to it's library, things start going smoother.

I download Transcode360, a third-party program that streams Divx and Xvid videos to the 360 and encodes on the fly. My god. It's awesome. I've only tested the start of Deadwood (pictured, obviously) but it works like a fucking dream. All I do is find the video on my Xbox, select it and choose "transcode" from the options. Bam. I'm watching it. And it even looks better than the files I was converting multiple times over. I would even call it DVD quality. And no out of sync dialog. YES!

I haven't even checked out it's functionality with pictures and music.

So all my problems are solved and I now have access to anything my heart desires. My life is streamlined, my hair's growing back, and I think I'm on the verge of curing cancer. All thanks to my 360, Media Center, and Transcode360. Life is good.

Did you read all that? No? Good, because you'd be a weirdo if you did. I just wanted to vent.

"Unplug the drug...A real American Idol"

A fantastic portable, rechargable solar lamp from the good people at pollinateenergy.org

The light is warm and extremely bright. After a day of charging I unplug it from the solar panel, and can use it as a desk lamp anywhere on the boat. At it's highest setting, one day's charge will last 6 hours...since buying it I have been able to stitch, write, read or paint well into the night. I used to have to stop doing finer work, because the reguar solar lights installed in the ceiling of my boat were bluish and not bright enough to do detailed work.

Even better, buying one Sunking Pro light makes 5 lights available to families living in the slums of India, so that kids don't have to study, and parents work at their livelihoods, in the poor, smelly, toxic light of a kerosene lamp.

The Concept:

As a culture, we have found ourselves entwined with the exponential growth of technology. Our everyday lives are entangled with the necessity for electronic machines, digital devices, chiming alerts, charging ports, LED screens and high speed connectivity.

This summer, we are extending the invitation for you to come unplug with us.

For three days and two nights, we will power down the communication devices and engage in conversation without texting. We will eat meals by the fire and connect socially without the social network. We will appreciate nature in its true form: up close and personal, without the pixels.

We welcome you to our tribal village.
