The Concept:

As a culture, we have found ourselves entwined with the exponential growth of technology. Our everyday lives are entangled with the necessity for electronic machines, digital devices, chiming alerts, charging ports, LED screens and high speed connectivity.

This summer, we are extending the invitation for you to come unplug with us.

For three days and two nights, we will power down the communication devices and engage in conversation without texting. We will eat meals by the fire and connect socially without the social network. We will appreciate nature in its true form: up close and personal, without the pixels.

We welcome you to our tribal village.

Unplug, wait a few minutes, then reboot...

my diet will consist of nothing but seafood, butter, and beer for the next week. yeehaw!

Had my yearly checkup today, I've been monitored for low tension glaucoma. I don't actually have it, but I have strange cupping in my optic nerve, and they just like to make sure everything is okay.

And everything is okay.

I took two shots in the office, and this is the better of the two, but I must have moved. It's fitting though, because those drops they use to dilate your eyes make everything just a little bit strange...

I like to come to places like this when I get fed up being around people. It's nice to unplug from civilisation and experience nature in its raw state.

No music, pointless smalltalk, overly-demanding bosses, annoying neighbours, unkept commitments, barking dogs, screaming kids, litter, or general sign of man's imposition on the landscape. Just the sound of the rolling sea, sculpting the coastline.

Added larger photoresistors to Andromeda Rocker then using Arduino Lilypad as LFO with them. The Rocker is plugged into a bent ElectroHarmonix Memory Toy analog(ish) delay. The Memory Toy delay is easier to deal with without its case, eventually to get 'bent'. Each LED on the lilypad is running on a different LFO duty cycle to allow for more flexibility with Andromeda Rocker. The delay effect can create infinite sustain (via self oscillation). You can actually just unplug the Rocker and the delay will run on indefinitely. The use of the delay with the Rocker allows you to create nice sweeps using the lights or a flashlight.

I help the earth by recycling. I unplug to Save electricity, and I take 5 minute showers. I think others should help the earth because it's imperfect. My drawing shows how we can change the world to make it a better place.

It’s a sugar coated version of XP that conflicts with my video editing programs. Microsoft has made it harder to move files with no “move” feature. They have taken away the windows picture viewer and gif images don’t work without extra software.

shaneksmith1957@gmail.com

Installing windows 7 signature edition on 32 bit and 64 bit. I had to wipe the 32 bit because 7 wouldn’t recognize windows 7 RC. Install of fresh 7 took About 40 minutes. From Vista 64 bit 7 copied and saved programs and data of @ 400gb on my lt and @ 80 programs in @ five hours! That was nice!

10/10/2009 9:39:53 PM

Wipe 7 32 bit because of ati problem. Starting re install

To ready desktop:

10/10/2009 10:08:59 PM

A wipe did not fix the ati glitch on a reinstall.

Windows 7 changed back to windows 7 basic color scheme and the tuner came back on. I had just plugged the tuner into Laptop 2 64bit vista and ati 650 worked. Then all of a sudden the tuner started working again on my 7 lt. Weird coincidence.

10/14/2009 4:21:42 AM

Uninistalling Roxio and using a windows basic or Aero theme in Display settings then re-installing the 650 program over the existing install made the 650 work for me again. I dare not mess with Windows TV tuner!

For those with simple need that don’t need a TV tuner I sugest Windows 7 Ultimate. For those willing to troubleshoot your ATI tuner I also suggest Windows 7 Ultimate!

10/14/2009 11:23:51 PM

A windows 7 update today caused the ati not to work again. It plays but is slow.

10/17/2009 5:16:59 AM

I had to reverrify my activation key on the 32 bit.

I can only network 2 machines that are both on 7.

10/17/2009 10:12:32 PM

A clean uninstall of the 650 then re-install AFTER re-installing roxio fixed it so far. It’s working with roxio now. Roxio’s TV tuner and the ati tuner are working. If you put in ati first before Roxio then Roxio won’t let you install ati.

Hp 7350 photo printer won’t work with hp laptop 64bit and 7 desktop 32bit. No compatible drivers I have found so far have helped.

I can’t figure out how to sort icons in Quick launch with 7.

Make a note of which wire goes where. May be an idea to label if you're not too good on the memory front. I took photos of everthing with the mobile camera as a visual reference. A picture's worth a thousand words as they say!

Oh yeah, and ME!

Tricaster has just died with a blue screen of death, Leo unplugs the cameras and everything from it.

Picture taken by Chris Marquardt at the TWiT Cottage during an involuntary break while live on Leo Laporte's TWiT Live TV

Chui, is Swahili for leopard. We call him our miracle cat. Back when we first got our Bengals we decided that since we had a pair it would be fun to let them mate and have a litter of kittens. Thought it would be a good way to get several more "free" Bengals...... I figured mating would come naturally to them. They are cats after all! Well, it didn't. Shawnee couldn't seem to quite figure it out and Tawny wasn't really helping. So, one day I decided if this was ever going to happen they needed some help. By lifting Tawny's rear hind end up and pushing Shawnee's rear end down they finally connected. Probably more then you wanted to know. ;-) Anyway, pretty soon we could tell that Tawny was pregnant. I had a trip to Australia planned about the time she was due. She had them about 3 days before I left. Jan, stayed home from work to be with her that day. As it turned out Tawny had 4 kittens. But, 3 of them were stillborn. Chui, was the last and Jan some how managed to get him breathing. That was the first miracle. Tawny rejected him and didn't want anything to do with him. So, no mothers milk. I left for Australia and was gone about a month. Jan, took over feeding Chui every couple of hours. It was in late November. She would put him in an Igloo Cooler (insulated) with a small blanket and take him into work with her. Surprisingly her boss was fine with her doing this. Chui, got pretty bad diarrhea from the kitten formula she was using, but, he seemed to be coming along fine other then that. I got back from my trip and of course wanted to see the little guy. He was really cute. Jan, handed him to me and just after receiving him he had an accident. Got me good! All down the front of my shirt! He soon was eating more solid food and the diarrhea was pretty much a thing of the past. Then Chui some how scratched himself by his eye. Figured it happened when scratching an itch with his hind foot. But, since he didn't have much of an immune system (no, mothers milk) it did get infected. The next morning his head was swollen up like a ballon. So, off to the vets with our "free" cat. Because of his diarrhea problem he already had been to the vets. It was a really bad infection. They kept him during the day, but, we had to take him to Pet Emergency for the night. They didn't know if he would make it. Lots of antibiotics, prayers and around $1100.00 later he was fine. Our "free" cat! ;-) That was the second miracle!

Things were going along great. Chui, was doing fine. Then one day I decided to go home from work to get something. Thing is I never go home during the day. I came up the stairs and Chui was laying there at the top. Looked okay, but, didn't get up and come to see me. I got what I needed and as I was leaving decided to check him over as he still hadn't moved. At first I couldn't find any problem. But, he just seemed so listless. Then I noticed a spot on his lower lip. It had been burned. I went and checked the few electrical cords that were plugged in. One had been chewed on. We rushed him to the vets. They took x-rays and found that his lungs were nearly full of fluid. Our vet came back in and told us that she didn't see any hope for him and that we should let her put him down. Jan, said okay if that's what needs to be done. I looked at the vet and said, NO! he will be okay. I had been praying for him and some how just knew it wasn't his time. They put a shunt in his leg and we tried giving him the antibiotics every 4 hours. But, after waking up at 1am and injecting myself with the needle, while trying to get the needle into the shunt as he fought Jan while she held him, we decided that wasn't going to work. So, same routine as before. Our vets during the day and Pet Emergency during the night. He is a very strong cat. After, several weeks of the best care and $1400.00 later (Our "free" cat!) he got better and was fine. This was the third miracle! Also, since then we don't leave any electrical cords plugged in if we are not using them. Watch TV plug it in. Program over unplug the TV, etc.

Then in October, 2008 we noticed Chui's nose was bleeding a little. We kept an eye on it and some days it was fine, other days just a little bloody crust. Then his eye started to swell shut. Chui hates going to the vets. Chui at that time weighted 28 pounds. Solid muscle. Normally he is a very, very gentle cat. But, go get the cat carrier and he knows. A real terror! The vets know him well! So, we had hoped that he wouldn't have to go. But, with the swelling around the eye we decided to take him. They took x-rays and a tissue sample from inside his nose. They had to sedate him. We were at work when Jan got a phone call from our vet. When she came back to see me, she was crying. Chui, has cancer! They say they can't treat it. So, we took Chui back to the vets and started asking questions. Our vet is a top vet. He could see how badly this was affecting us. I said, there must be something we can do. This little guy is a survivor. I told him about the other times and all he had survived. We had changed vets. This one was closer then the one in Eagle River. I also, told him I was a firm believer in prayer and miracles. Finally, he said, we could try chemo therapy, but, he didn't think it would work with the cancer in the nose. We started the treatments. Chui, fought them. They would have to put him under for each treatment. The swelling started going down. His nose stopped bleeding. But, the downside was how bad it was affecting him. I was leaving for Australia again in February. Each trip to the vets was chaos. I am sure they dreaded it as much as we did. Jan, wouldn't be able to take him while I was gone. We talked to the vet about it. I told him we were going to leave it in God's hands while I was gone and that it would be fine. I know a lot of people were praying for him. Our prays were answered. That was the fourth miracle! Our "free" cat. The chemo and exams were around $2400.00. Our vet just shakes his head when he see's Chui. Says, he wouldn't have believed it.

Then March 2010 we had a scare. Chui's, breathing got very rapid and shallow. I thought maybe pneumonia. So, back to the vets. X-rays showed his lungs were filling with fluid. Our vet said he was afraid the cancer had come back and invaded the lungs. They sent x-rays to a radiologist to read. He said, it was an allergic reaction. So, after a steroid injection he was fine. It was later in October that we found out that it was asthma. Steroid injections can help keep it in control. Chui, just turned 12. I hope he has many more years with us. He is a special cat. Loves to head butt, likes his belly scratched, likes to have water sprayed into his mouth from a spray bottle as a way to get a drink. Our "free" cat has been our most expensive cat, but, he has been worth every penny and more. Prayers are answered and miracles still do happen. :-)

PS - That pillow he is laying on is a queen size. Chui, weighed 28 pounds and that was solid muscle.

30 Days of Gratitude: Day 8 - I am grateful for hot coffee in the morning.

Is your TV on or off? Is your microwave oven and coffeemaker using electricity even when you aren’t using those appliances? Did you know that mobile phone chargers are using electricity even when they’re plugged in?

www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/definitions/Phantom-Load

A "phantom load" is any appliance or electronic gizmo that uses energy even when turned off. Some people call them "vampire appliances" or "energy vampires." Phantom energy is drained by items including computers that still use power even when they're asleep, power tools that still drain electricity when the battery's charging, and anything with a built-in clock.

If your home is typical, you live with 20 vampires. They add about $200 to your annual energy bill, according to Cornell University. That’s because the "off" button doesn’t really mean "off" these days; instead, it means "standby." In fact, your TV with remote control likely uses more energy during the 20 hours a day that it’s turned off and in a "standby power" state than it does during the hours you watch the tube.

The upshot, according to Cornell, is we’re using the equivalent of seven electrical generating plants just to supply vampires that are turned "off."

Here are some clues to identify your energy suckers: They're appliances with remote controls, such as TVs, VCRs and audio equipment. They feature a continuous digital display -- like those glowing clocks on stoves. They feature rechargeable batteries, such as cordless phones (which use energy even after the battery is charged). And they're appliances with external power supplies, such as inkjet printers and iPod chargers.

How can you combat vampires?

•Kill vampires by using a power strip sold at hardware stores, home-supply superstores, discount stores and the like. Step 1: Plug all components of a computer or home entertainment system into a power strip. Step 2: Turn off the power strip with a single switch. Anything plugged into the strip now is truly turned off.

•Unplug "vampires." Unplug rarely used appliances. Ditto for chargers that aren't in use. Unplug the TV, toaster oven and other well-used appliances before you leave. If it’s not plugged in, it can’t suck energy.

This upgrade took me approximately 3 hours. And it's primarily because I was doing 5 other things at once including playing Wolfenstein on XBOX360 and filling out my passport renewal form in addition to being flat out incompetent. Realistically, it should take approximately 1 hour with the greater portion of that time being spent waiting for on the installation of your OS of choice.

My Eee is an Eee 900 w/4gb "fast" SSD and 16gb "slow" SSD. It was the Linux model that I reformatted and put XP on. 4gb of "fast" bootable SSD is usable, but my WinXP was so stripped down that I'd keep finding things that I left out when creating the install using nLite. That pissed me off.

The 4gb "fast" SSD is soldered onboard, so it ain't going anywhere. The 16gb "slow" SSD, however, is easily user-replaceable. To do so, these are the steps you follow:

1) UPGRADE THE BIOS to the latest version - I forgot to do this and it was bad. Very bad.

2) Shut down, unplug & remove battery.

3) Remove panel on bottom of Netbook (2 screws). The panel is easily removable and gives access to the RAM (you might as well replace that with a Kingston 2gb stick while you're at it) and the mini-PCIe SSD.

4) Remove the two screws securing the SSD.

5) Replace w/new, improved SSD.

6) Normally, you could close up the bottom and start things up at this point, however, I always perform a "sanity check" and power up and go into the BIOS to see if it recognises what I've added before buttoning everything up.

If all has gone well, you will see the new SSD in the BIOS under the boot devices. From there, I booted from my trusty Win7 Ultimate RTM USB key and installed everything onto the new, roomy & fast SSD.

If I were to do this again, I'd buy the 64gb version for some extra space for storage. I could throw in a large SDHC card, but I'd prefer to keep the SD card slot open & available for dumping photos and the like.

Next project: upgrading my ThinkPads and other laptops and the Eee Box to Intel X-25M 80gb G2 SSDs. The X40 & X41 will get 1.8" SSDs

3) Remove the top 3 wires from the coil (back 3 cylinders) and unplug the signal connector. Now you will be able to move the coil out of the way. Remember to mark and make sure you get the correct wire back into the correct coil location (VERY important but also very easy to correctly do).

Frustrated with vague connection errors and the inability to play against my friends over Nintendo's WiFi service I went out and purchased their USB Connector last night. After nearly lobotomizing my laptop to get the connector installed I have yet to feel as if I.m any better off. Let.s start at the top, shall we...

I had three main reasons for picking up the USB connector - them being:

1.I was getting pretty fed up with connection issues when attempting to visit friend's towns in Animal Crossing, or trying to put the pedal to the metal in Mario Kart. While Animal Crossing would spit out error messages pertaining to non-existent firewalls, Mario Kart would just keep trying and trying and trying and trying and trying. I figured the USB connector would be the way to go to eradicate both of these situations.

2.Since my wife and I both have a Nintendo DS I wanted us both to be able to play on-line at the same time. Now I admit, I didn't look into if I can make this happen with my wireless router, I just know I tried it and it didn't work. I saw the USB connector as an answer to this issue as well.

3.Lastly, I had visions of being able to tote the adapter around in my gadget bag, fire up my laptop anywhere I could get a WiFi signal and jump onto Nintendo's WiFi service. Now I know this last one is flawed as all get out (if you don't know why just keep reading), but at the time it sounded like an amazing prospect, and the USB connector was the key I needed to unlock this portable gaming possibility.

As of this writing the USB connector has yet to deliver on any of these. I am STILL unable to connect to a friend of mine from my current location ("It always works at home" _ Wang) yet able to connect with others no problem (both pre and post USB connector). Now I know what you're thinking, problem must be on his end right? Wrong! I am able to connect to him just fine from other WiFi hotspots - just not the one I spend 90% of my time at.

As far as being able to use more than one DS at a time with the USB connector, I have yet to try. The connector made such a mess of my laptop during the install I'm afraid to try. My genius moment was realizing that my laptop's WiFi adapter and the USB connector do not play well with each other. No biggie, just disable my laptop's adapter, plug into to a LAN and the USB connector sings like a bird. Problem is, when I want to undo this. I shut down the Nintendo Software, remove the USB connector, unplug the LAN connection and enable my laptop's adapter. Then, I wait... and wait and wait and wait. If I'm lucky my laptop will pick up a pitiful signal (I'm about 3 feet from the router). If I'm not lucky the adapter will sputter and die, and nothing I can do will bring it back to life. Try and shutdown, and my poor laptop just dies at a blue screen until I hold in the power button to end its life. Fun, huh?

I've tried several times to figure out a workable way around this - and regardless of the variation, the main theme plays out like this: turn laptop on - laptop WiFi is keen, use USB connector - Nintendo WiFi is keen turn off USB connector off - laptop WiFi is mutated to a unrecognizable form. Reboot and repeat as necessary.

I installed the USB connector on my desktop computer, and the damn thing just sailed on through the installation and fired up without a hitch. Still couldn't get connected to my buddy, but at least I didn't murder another computer in the process of trying. I was going to return the USB connector, but I think I'll keep it at this point, and install it for anyone who pisses me off enough.

I called Nintendo's WiFi hotline, and while Lisa was pleasant and sounded like she generally wanted to help, she had no documentation or information pertaining to my issues. She offered to have a specialist call me back, but I told her I'd rather take my chances with add / remove programs.

I'm debating on throwing together a dedicated Nintendo WiFi box at home with a spare PC I have lying around, but I think I'll hold off until we buy our new house.

Anyone else experience anything similar with Nintendo's little USB dongle of death? For the record and you techie types - my laptop is an IBM T42p with an Intel® PRO / Wireless 2200BG adapter.

Forgot to address #3 from my list - my laptop's wireless adapter interferes with the USB connector, so it must be off in order to use it. I guess I can still use it anywhere I can physically plug my laptop in, but that narrows the playing field quite a bit.

I was tagged by ashley :)

and my sister took these of me.

so here are 16 facts about me... and i only have one other contact, so paul, get ready to get a message from me haha

1. My middle name is Blair, but I spell it as Blaire. The absence of an 'e' just irks me

2. I think I'm a hypochondriac... and I probably am for thinking that I am one.

3. I prefer DSLR cameras, but I have this strange camera that's kind of like a DSLR (without the interchangeable lenses) and kind of like a point-and-shoot (but not as small). It's pretty decent for the price, i just wish I knew how to take better pictures with it, seeing as i'm still toying around with it.

4. I have a Macbook but I really want a Macbook Pro. and not the new ones, the generation where the MBPs actually didn't look like the MBs. reason being is that I have 52.79gb of space left with only 7 months of me having it. and if I sell this on ebay, plus use the profits of my job (which I'll explain in the next fact thingy), i'll prolly have enough.

5. I work at an ice rink helping little kids learn to skate in the skating school. it's pretty fun. i only work 6 hours a week, but it fits in perfectly with choir practices, flute lessons, Peace Project meetings, buildOn meetings, and the little space i have for homework. haha. although I only get paid once a month :(

6. I complain A LOT.

7. I also procrastinate A LOT.

8. I've been playing the flute for five years. I guess i'm pretty good at it. I love it. Ive had three flutes haha but I just sold one on ebay, so now I have an Amadeus AF700 for my classical playing and a Gemeinhardt student flute (forgot what model it is haha) that I use for band. one of my New Year's resolutions was to practice every day for at least an hour so i can actually get into a college based on my audition because my grades are pretty bad (well, to my mom's standards at least. i have a 3.2). playing open holed is pretty hard tho :/ especially the low register.

9. I'm really clumsy. I've broken my pinky when I was in 2nd grade, but im surprised I've never broken anything else. (come to think of it, I think i broke my toe a couple months ago, but i never went to the doctors since it 'can't be fixed.' it still hurts). I drop EVERYTHING and have broken phones, ipods, cameras (well, they sucked anyway haha). I'm trying to be more careful about my things, as I'm gonna sell my camera, iPod, and computer and get a Macbook Pro, an iPhone, and probably a D80 or D60.

10. I don't lie, with the exception of little white lies to ward off people i dont like haha. Abstaining from lying was my New Year's resolution from 2008, and i stuck with it, because seeing people lie about stuff is a huge pet peeve of mine. along with when people chomp on their ice

11. I love animals. My dog is great. he's just REALLY mean to people, and when i say mean, i mean it (no pun intended :P). People are afraid to come to my house anymore, and when the do, into a secluded locked room he goes. When i have my own house, I want a chinchilla, a guinea pig and an adopted mixed breed dog. I'm not too fond of cats though

12. I've been around the same height, weight, and shoe size since 6th grade (i'm now in 11th grade hahaha). the only thing that's changed really is my vision, which unfortunately, has gotten worse. I suck at putting contacts in and i despise wearing my glasses, so Im getting lasik done when I'm 17 *hopefully*

13. Not many people know their neighbors. Im happy to say I do. I live on a cul-de-sac which everyone thinks its a private street because we have some dude make a fancy sign instead of the regular street signs. but it's public. it has about 50 houses, most of them were built in the 50s. I know maybe about 80% of the people who live here, and about half of that 80% i can trust for rides to my job, or stay there if i get locked out of my house haha

14. I'm terrified of riding on planes and roller coasters. and heights in general. i almost fell out of a roller coaster a few years ago because the restraint kept popping up.

15. I'm trying to reduce my footprint on the earth, figuratively speaking of course (I don't weight that much ahha). I turn off lights when I'm not in the room or if its light outside, i use that natural sunlight. I unplug stuff I'm not using. I recycle :D the only thing i need to work on is taking shorter showers, because mine are usually 20 - 30 minutes :P

16. I write a lot :o

Unplug - balance - reconnect.

I kept forgetting to unplug my soldering iron when I was done with it.

So I built this 15 minute timer box - which will cut the power.

When I need to roll the router table away from the dust extraction connection, I just pull off the 4" hose using the slip-quick-connector, and unplug the connection to the dust extraction controller using this plug. Then the table is free to roll anywhere in the shop.

Do not lift the cover off any further than this! Unplug the cable from the power button before going any further. It's an awkward, recessed connector with three wires. Have a look at the "eMac Disassembly" set for the rest of the photos.
