The unique dairy barn originally stabled 52 milk cows. It offers ground-level access on all three levels. Wagons entered on the upper level to deposit hay into the central haymow on the main floor below. The Brethren would drive the empty wagons around the circular barn floor and exit the same door they came in, eliminating the potentially dangerous activity of backing wagons out of a barn. The cows stabled on the main floor faced inward toward the haymow for ease of feeding. Manure shoveled through trapdoors to the cellar was stored until needed as fertilizer in the gardens. The Shakers maintained a working dairy farm at Hancock into the 1950s.

The stone sculptures in Sno, a small village in the Kazbegi region of Georgia, are part of a remarkable art project in the Caucasus. It is a real treat to walk around Reykjavic, Iceland and see how many interesting things you can find. A colorful and unique town.

My attention was drawn to this entrance because of the six engravings.
Black and White with only Blue.
I don't know why but the entrance is lit inside with a blue light.
This 9 meter lighthouse was built in 1930, is not the prettiest or imposing of lighthouses, but, it is a unique design and is now a protected structure. In the past it fell in to disrepair and the 2 tonne bell was removed for fear of it's weight pulling the structure down. The bell became lost until two ladies found it covered in rags in a warehouse. It is now on display in the town.
Still working, but the bell is replaced with an electronic siren, the white light, mounted on the square gallery at the top of the tower gives 3 quick Flashes every 10 seconds and is visible for 16 nautical miles.

Ce sera malheureusement le seul épisode neigeux significatif de cet hiver 23/24, pour les plaines de l'ouest suisse.

This unique style of architecture has its roots far back in Korean history and derives its singular style from the simple peasant houses that were common hundreds of years ago and had actual thatched roofs with generous eaves. Although the Koreans build most of their buildings using international standards of architectural design they do occasionally build structures, especially houses or sometimes restaurants, using this style that harks back to their distant past. I find them most interesting and pleasing to the eye. There is something of the Hobbit about these homes.
Please note that this was downloaded four years ago and I found a far better version of this than the one I originally ran. So this is a do-over. This house, due to its peculiar but lovely construction, was challenging in getting a shot that did not look distorted because the house itself was built in such an eccentric way. So...here it is again in all its glory.

This façade in Amsterdam captures the city's unique blend of practicality and charm. The building's brickwork, arched windows, and bold red shutters are typical of the old canal houses that line the waterways. Over time, many of these commercial structures were converted into homes or offices, yet they retained their original shapes, preserving the city's mercantile identity.
Today, these façades are symbols of continuity and adaptation. While the bicycles leaning on the walls and the restored windows speak of modern urban life, the materials and forms remain anchored in the Golden Age of Amsterdam. The balance between preservation and reinvention is what gives the city its timeless character; a place where centuries of history coexist naturally with daily life.

In August a vey good friend gave me a very unique opportunity to photograph some Barn Owls that were visiting his garden. It's something I'm extremely thankful for and won't ever forget.

The unique Glasswing or Clearwing (Greta oto, too Greta morgane oto) is a brush-footed butterfly where its wings are completely transparent. Like its English name its Spanish name too is very fascinating. It is called 'Espejitos', which means 'little mirrors’. The tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass.
The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown, sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color. The length of the wings is between 4.5 and 6.0 cm. It is thought that their mostly transparent wings make these butterflies less visible when in flight.
It is a day active common butterfly from Central America (Mexico to Panama) and the Caribbean. The Glasswing may also be found in Venezuela in the mountain area around the City of Caracas. Adult glaswings inhabit the tropical rainforest and feed on the nectar of a variety of tropical flowers.
This picture was taken in the indoor tropical butterfly garden of De Passiflorahoeve in Harskamp, the Netherlands.
De unieke glasvleugelvlinder (Greta oto, ook Greta morgane oto) is een wat schuwe overdag actieve vlinder met doorzichtige vleugels. Het is een algemeen voorkomende vlinder in Midden-Amerika (Mexico tot Panama) en het Caraïbische gebied. De soort wordt ook gevonden in Venezuela in het bergachtige gebied rond de stad Caracas, maar is daar minder algemeen.
Net als de Engelse en Nederlandse namen “glasswing” en “glasvleugel” is de Spaanse naam in Midden-Amerika, waar de vlinder vandaan komt, ook erg fascinerend. De vlinder heet daar ‘Espejitos’, wat 'kleine spiegels' betekent. Het doorzichtige weefsel tussen de aderen van de vleugels lijkt op glas. De niet doorzichtige aderen zijn donkerbruin, soms wat rood of oranje.
Het lichaam van de vlinder is donker van kleur. De lengte van de vleugels is tussen 4,5 en 6,0 cm.
Er wordt gedacht dat de doorzichtige vleugels de vlinders minder zichtbaar maken tijdens de vlucht voor vogels en andere dieren die wel een vlinder lusten.
Volwassen glasvleugelvlinders bewonen het tropisch regenwoud en voeden zich met de nectar van de tropische bloemen.
De verschillende soorten glasvleugelvlinders rusten en overnachten vaak in groepen. Dit groepsgedrag is vaker te zien bij vlinders uit de onderfamilie Danainae (monarchvlinders), waartoe de vlinder, ondanks de wat afwijkende vorm, ook wordt gerekend.
Deze foto is gemaakt in de tropische vlinderkas van De Passiflorahoeve bij Harskamp.
De Passiflorahoeve gaat verhuizen
De Passiflorahoeve krijgt begin januari 2022 een nieuwe eigenaar en verhuist dan naar een nieuwe locatie een paar kilometer van het huidige adres. De opzet blijft hetzelfde, maar het wordt groter en bijna volledig overdekt, waardoor het seizoen langer kan duren. Ook de passiebloemen komen dan in een kas. De huidige eigenaar blijft nog drie jaar aan de Passiflorahoeve verbonden. Het streven is om de nieuwe Passiflorahoeve begin juli 2022 te openen.

Questa foto l'ho scattata quando una leggera pioggerellina cadeva dal cielo e se uno guarda bene può vedere delle piccolissime gocce sul tarassaco. La foto in bianco e nero secondo me è molto più bella di quella a colori anche perché così si distingue meglio il bianco del tarassaco!
