On 17th September Pioneer Club ran the Tullett Memorial Trial at Graylees Road on Banks Peninsula. The club was rewarded with 41 entrants comprising 10 teams competing for the unique trophy which is a circular shield made by laminating a number of different timbers.
Each team was made up of a Red grade rider, a Yellow Grade rider and one Blue, plus a fourth person that could ride any grade. As a team event it was great to have three Junior riders in the teams plus two Mini riders who also rode the Clubman line for the day. Riders were greeted with a warm but windy day, with strong gusts making it hard especially for riders in the top grade.
Thanks to the riders who travelled from Blenheim and Kaikoura to make up teams for the event. The team of Brendon & Gareth Wadsworth, plus Fabian Macdonald from Marlborough, joined by Dick Gardner from Christchurch, rode together as Team Marlborough to win the event and hold the trophy for a year.
Len Tullett was a Pioneer club member who edited the first club newsletter, The Megaphone. He died in 1947 and the first memorial trial was held in October 1948. In those days there were many clubs in Christchurch so the first event in 1948 saw two teams each from Pioneer, Corsair, and Canterbury Auto Cycles clubs, plus regional teams from Tai Tapu and two teams from Brighton.
The trophy was competed for a number of times, but the last time Pioneer ran the Tullett Memorial Trial was in April 2010. With this year being the 80th year of publishing the Megaphone, it was decided to bring the event back and mark this milestone.
Thanks to the winning team who travelled from Blenheim, and also to David Trewin and the Schroder family who travelled down and rode together a Kaikoura team. Pioneer want to make this an annual event and we are hoping to have an Otago team next year.

Another first year project was to create unique advertisement. I decided to advertise for Pittsburgh Zoo, I love using triangles in a lot of my artwork and therefore decided to create a geometric deer. I think the image and colours are very striking. I created a series of these but with different animals. I like the outcome due to the illustration and colour but it could have other elements within it as there is empty space. Saying this, I do like the simplicity of the design.
