The product of a rainy day in June, the chance to go through older image files. This of Kilchurn Castle in Argyll, on the shore of Loch Awe. For reasons I never understood, some bright spark has littered the place with ugly Heras panels, so I took the chance to digitally remove them, then decided to try a monochrome version. Now I like both, so posting two versions of the same file.
I thought about cropping out the people but left them in so the size of the columns could be understood.

It was with these first contemplative photos (I started in 2011) that I understood that perception, insight, explores an intelligence that is neither intellectual nor emotional, but visual. Perception, understood in this way, is equivalent to full attention, mindfulness. This visual intelligence is part of everyone; it is not a special talent or something rare. Contemplative practice is precisely the exercise of removing the veil that covers this capacity of ours, a veil formed by anxieties, expectations, judgments and haste.

When I woke up that morning I quickly understood it wasn't a good day. Indeed, I missed two times the A340 Air Tahiti Nui at Orly in the afternoon but I decided to go to Le Bourget to catch this classic even if the sky was clearly overcast... Few minutes before her arrival, the light arrived and this was one of the only aircraft of the day with a such light! Coming in from Riyadh and seen here touching on runway 25 with "Hotel Zulu Alpha Bravo Three" as callsign.

I found it hard to communicate to my kids what happened on 9/11. They understood the idea, the concept. They understood it in a gee-that-sucks kind of way. But they did not get it. I was in LA at the time, but like all Americans I was glued to the TV all day. I don't pretend to feel what New Yorkrs felt. That unthinkable assault on normality will always be with those who were Americans on that day. This memorial in New Jersey is called Empty Sky, and its a fitting name. Its still odd to me to see one tower, and not two. I do LOVE that one was rebuilt though.
Sunrise at this monument gives it a special look, like a fireball. I did not know thismonument was here, I never knew it existed, so showing up at the crack of dawn to see the Stature of Liberty, this monument took me by surprise. If find it hard to leave any 9/11 monument, but I thought the simplicity of this one was captivating. I wish I could say I planned the light, but I did not. Just luck. Enjoy.
I have never fully understood the appeal of the Mullein plant, especially in the fall, for Warblers. But Cape May and Nashville Warblers in particular seem drawn to them. I had always assumed that it might be insects hidden inside the flower pods, but this one looks pretty insect-free. Maybe this bird was just late to the party.

The very first sun breaking the horizon creates an unusual deepening of the tones in this bird, which is great, but it can threaten my fall southbound migration identification confidence. I wondered for a while but given the eye rings, on top of other indicators, I am pretty sure this is a Nashville.

Photography rules should be understood, but then broken if it will make a good photo. One oft-cited rule is that the middle of the day is a horrid time to take photos since the light is too strong and it makes harsh lights and shadows. Yet the photographer who wants insects will go out when they are out, and often that means the middle of the day.
The noon whistle was blowing as I photographed this beautifully backlit chickweed geometer. I was out for a long midday walk, with noon smack-dab in the middle, and I saw five or six dozen species of insects and spiders, getting photos of most of them.

Those of us who shot trains on film back in the day understood its limitations. Kodachrome in particular was a great film, and the ASA 25 variety captured an image as close to reality as one could hope for. Where it failed was in less than ideal lighting, especially backlighting capturing dark subject matter at speed.
Digital photography knows no limitations. With a little post processing, the detail in shadow areas is present, and to me this image with bounce lighting is lifelike, and beautiful.
UP 4533 is pulling an OCS train on the former Rio Grande in Price Canyon. The train was completely backlit in the morning light, but with my Canon 6D Mark II sensor and electronics, no lighting situation was too difficult for the technology to capture and conquer.

"The Holy Trinity Column (Czech: Sloup Nejsvětější Trojice) in Olomouc, in the Czech Republic is a Baroque monument (Trinity column) that was built between 1716 and 1754. The main purpose was to celebrate the Catholic Church and faith, partly caused by feeling of gratitude for ending a plague, which struck Moravia (now in the Czech Republic) between 1713 and 1715. The column was also understood to be an expression of local patriotism, since all artists and master craftsmen working on this monument were Olomouc citizens, and almost all depicted saints were connected with the city of Olomouc in some way.
It is the biggest Baroque sculptural group in the Czech Republic. In 2000 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "one of the most exceptional examples of the apogee of central European Baroque artistic expression".

When we first got this cat tree, Tigs had decided he was too good for it and so after a couple weeks of him not going near it, I told him if he didn't start using it I was going to donate it.
Seems he understood me and decided the cat tree was good enough after all because he's started using it a little more regularly now.

I wish I understood rocks better. I did do geology at university but doing stereographic projections of crystals left me, and beer and good company seemed more interesting. But the patterns and textures within the cliff faces at Dinorwic are wondrous things to me.
