Winter has arrived...and with startling suddenness. The lake literally froze overnight with temperatures heading into the single digits, below zero forecast for early next week. In fact, wind chills are forecast for -37F /-38C. I've never understood why these two measurements ultimately even out, but a bit chilly by any calculation.

What is understood to possibly be the most photographed pub in Britain, the Stunning Thatched pub is in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.
Standing in the centre of the old village of Shanklin and getting its name from its association with the local fisherman, the Crab is said to have been used by King Charles I when he was interned at Carisbrooke. It is a charming sixteenth century building with a thatched roof - everything a country inn should be. Data obtained online

Хоть я и понимал, что снимать там особенно нечего зимой, меня это не останавливало. Выходные я провел замечательно, катался на снегоходе, отсыпался и иногда выходил поснимать рассвет. Вот результат одной из таких вылазок.
The North has become a kind of drug for me, if I don’t go there for a long time, then it starts to break me down. Therefore, when it was a long weekend, I didn’t think much, packed my things and went to the mountains. Although I understood that there was nothing special to shoot there in winter, this did not stop me. I had a wonderful weekend, riding a snowmobile, sleeping and sometimes going out to shoot the sunrise. Here is the result of one of these outings.
Flamingos usually stand on one leg with the other tucked beneath the body. The reason for this behaviour is not fully understood. One theory is that standing on one leg allows the birds to conserve more body heat, given that they spend a significant amount of time wading in cold water. However, the behaviour also takes place in warm water and is also observed in birds that do not typically stand in water. An alternative theory is that standing on one leg reduces the energy expenditure for producing muscular effort to stand and balance on one leg. A study on cadavers showed that the one-legged pose could be held without any muscle activity, while living flamingos demonstrate substantially less body sway in a one-legged posture. As well as standing in the water, flamingos may stamp their webbed feet in the mud to stir up food from the bottom.

This monster cloud was the first time I understood what a bubble cloud was all about. Called mammatus clouds, ie, mammary cloud, they look like a a cellular pattern of pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud.

This is a blossom I photographed on some sort of shrub or tree at my daughter's high school. I have no idea what it is, but it caught my eye... being one of the few things blooming right now. If you can identify it, please let me know. Thanks!
UPDATE: My dear friend Anja (blondepowers) identified this blossom. It is a Magnolia Stellata , also known as a Star Magnolia. Also, the flower that I uploaded yesterday for Eva was not a tulip... it was an Anemone . I'm such a dork. I buy bulbs all the time and forget what I planted. Hahaha. Thank you Anja for identifying my flowers!

Well, well, well, I have to shake my head and say that I fully understood that these guys eclose (hatch) on their own time.
Only about half of the ones I raised earlier in the season have eclosed and the rest are just hanging out taking up space.
Still, I am glad to have given them a bit of a boost for the summer. I just hope the ones that are hanging out leave before next spring.

Scramble to Sarrail Ridge was tough, lots of people returned back after enjoying the beauty of Rawson Lake from the bottom - www.flickr.com/photos/runqing/51606781518/in/dateposted/
Rawson Lake is stunning and totally worth the uphill battle before getting to the first lookout of the gorgeous lake. The photo was taken while climbing Sarrail Ridge, capturing the Rawson Lake and Rocky Mountains around it. My camera was hanging on my neck, dangling while climbing the mountain, but I could take photos at any rest stops to enjoy the beauties of the lake and mountains.
Met a guy who did not follow the “trail” path, but hiking along the mountains shown in my photo on his own, came back along the “trail” path, passed me quickly like running on the ground… But he stopped and talked to me for a bit. He told me, he had feeling he could hike that way, he was the ONLY one on that "path"... I was so surprised by his super climbing ability, also understood why some people missed in the mountains every year… Good luck for him!
PS: Sarrail Ridge is a 11.3-kilometer trail located near Kananaskis, Alberta. It is rated as difficult. The trail starts from the Upper Kananaskis Lake parking lot.

Large cormorant found nearly worldwide. Note large size, white patch on throat, and lack of crest. Breeding adults show circular white patch on flanks. Immatures typically have contrasting white belly; African "White-breasted" also has extensive white underparts in all plumages. Often spotted standing on rocks or pilings. I was surprised to find out how many times I've seen Great Cormorants, but when I realized that I had two okay photos, I understood why. I've seen several sub-species in multiple countries, but I finally got reasonably close to a couple to get a photo. Not in breeding plumage yet, but still a nice shot of a pair.
