Washington Slaagbai Park comprises the Northern third of the island. It has been maintained in pristine condition although in past centuries it was denuded of it's native population of Brazil Wood trees and then used as a goat farm that supplied passing ships with goat meat. Slaagbai was a small sheltered bay where ships could dock to pick up provisions. The area is alive with numerous kinds of birds and is a favorite place for birders. It is a desert landscape which gets very little rainfall. The highest point on Bonaire is in the park with an elevation of around 750 feet. On Caribbean islands the amount of rainfall is a function of elevation. Islands with high elevations get significant rainfall while low coral uplift type islands get very little.

This eclectic edifice was built between 1856 and 1860 according to the wishes of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg (later to become Emperor of Mexico), and planned by Carl Junker. The interior furniture and decorations are genuine period pieces. The extensive park (22 hectares) is located on the seashore and was designed by the Archduke. The cliff it was built on, which had no vegetation whatsoever at the time, was cultivated with numerous tropical species of trees and plants.

AVisitors to the castle will be able to see the following: Maximilian's chambers and those of his consort, Carlota of Belgium; the guest rooms; the information room telling the history of the Castle and the Park's construction; the Duke Amadeo of Aosta's apartment with furnishings from the 1930's in the Rationalist style. All the rooms still feature the original furnishings, ornaments, furniture and objects dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy are the music room where Carlota used to play the fortepiano, now on show in room VII. In room XIX there are a series of paintings by Cesare dell'Acqua depicting the history of Miramare. Lastly, visitors may visit the throne room, which was recently restored and brought back to its former splendour.

parterreThe park offers the public a chance for an interesting stroll among botanical species and an important collection of sculptures dotted along its numerous paths. A visit should also be paid to the Stables, a building which was recently restored and is now used for temporary exhibitions; the Old Greenhouses and the Little Castle, with its original decoration on the first floor, are also well worth a visit.

Whisky on the Rocks of Fuji

This shot was an idea I had in my head for about a year; it all started when I saw this Fuji-glass in a bar. I tracked one down for myself (turns out it was a packaged gift with certain bottles of Suntory whisky) and took it with me this summer when I traveled down to Lake Kawaguchi at the foot of Mt. Fuji. I walked around the town for a couple of hours until I found a nice setting with a lot of red.

This photo was achieved by setting my camera to a high-speed continuous shutter setting, focusing on the foreground for one shot, auto-focusing on the background for the second, and then having the camera auto-focus and shoot my hand holding the cup in front of the lens. I merged the three photos together using a couple different programs and then used Aperture to balance the colors of the photo out (the sunlight on the glass was way to distracting). Apologies if my use of software to create this photo makes it less enjoyable for some, but I knew of no other way to get everything I wanted in focus, in focus.

I was (and still am) blown away by the amount of 'Flikr love' I got for this photo just a few short hours after posting. The number of views, favorites, and comments, in such a short time frame was both incredibly exciting and at the same time very humbling.

Thank you all for helping this photo make it to the front page of Explore, and for letting it linger in the 'interestigness' section for a couple of days. These are two achievements I never dreamt possible as an amateur hobbyist photographer. A big thank you to all those who left comments, I really appreciate you taking the time to write them; I certainly love reading them. I cannot think of another time in my life when I have received such positive feedback for something I've done, and for that, thank you to the entire Flickr community.

Side notes:

The original title of this shot was: "Seeing Double" but I decided to change it after getting some ideas from people's comments on other sites.

To those curious about the whisky: In hindsight, I probably should have went out and bought some Suntory whisky for this shot, but I wasn't near any stores so I just used the whisky from my flask, Johnnie Walker: Black.

One year ago today I was heading up from Sydney to Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia. I was going to stay with some friends I had made just a few months prior while traveling through Europe. Sitting just off the coast from Hervey Bay is a sand-island called Fraser Island. We did a 2 night stay out on the island. While the island is made entirely of sand, a rainforest has managed to form in the center. The island also features several freshwater pools and streams. Because of the topography of the island, the only way to get around is by 4-wheel-drive vehicle. As part of the tour we did, we rode a large 4-wheel-drive bus across the island and all along 75 Mile Beach, which stretches the length of the island. We made several stops along the beautiful beach including Indian Head and Champagne Pools. At one point we had the option to take a quick plane tour over the island. Since it was a good price and the opportunity probably would never present itself again, we decided to take it. Here is a shot, taken from the plane, of the well known shipwreck, along the beach, of the SS Maheno. We also stopped off along the beach to take a closer look.

More information about Kunming lake and the Summer Palace in Beijing can be found at my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/location/Summer-Palace

Kunming Lake (昆明湖) forms the centre of the Summer Palace gardens in Beijing, China. In fact, the lake takes up most of the parks area, covering 2.2 square kilometres or three quarters of the garden grounds. The lake is relativly shallow, with a depth of just 1.5 mtres. The lake is largely man made though a small pond existed on the site before development. The lake was created by Guo Shoujing, originally as a reservoir for the nearby capital, during the Yuan dynasty (1291). The area was converted into the imperial garden between 1750 and 1764, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. Work was undertaken to expand the existing lake at that time. The spoil from excavating the lake was used to form the nearby Longevity Hill. The lake develops a thick lair of ice during the winter, during which time it can be used for skating. In the summer, a large number of small boats cover the lake.

"I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move" Cit. R.L. Stevenson

At the Sutro Baths there is a small cave-like tunnel through some of the rocks. About halfway through there is an opening where you can look down into a lower chamber where light breaks through a small opening onto some sand and crashing waves. It’s quite interesting and beautiful how it, sort of, sparkles. I’ve tried to photograph it on multiple occasions, but it’s tricky to meter properly to get the right exposure. I think I nailed it this time. The contrast is so high, that even to the naked eye this scene looks black and white.
