Huayna Potosí is the closest high mountain to La Paz. Surrounded by high mountains, it is roughly 15 miles due north of the city, which makes this mountain the most popular climb in Bolivia. The normal ascent route is a fairly straightforward glacier climb, with some crevasses and a steep climb to the summit. However, the other side of the mountain -- Huayna Potosí West Face -- is the biggest face in Bolivia. Several difficult snow and ice routes ascend this 1000 meter high face.

The view would have looked very different 20 years ago:
Thought to be 18,000 years old;
Bolivian scientists started measuring it in the 1990s;
They predicted in 2005 that it would survive until 2015;
But it shrank faster than expected and had vanished almost completely by 2009;
Scientists think that the speed of its melting is an indicator of climate change.

Many Bolivians on the Altiplano and in two of Bolivia's main cities — La Paz and El Alto — partially depend on melt water from Andean glaciers for their water supply during the dry season. The World Bank has warned that many glaciers in the tropical portion of the Andes are expected to disappear within 20 years.
This will threaten the water supplies of nearly 80 million people as well as the future generation of hydropower. Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru depend on hydropower for about half their electricity.

The Lemaire Channel is considered one of the most scenic places of the Antarctic Peninsula. For the beauty of its landscape which consists of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, icebergs and rocky cliffs has become one of the main tourist destinations of Antarctica. The channel has been nicknamed by some “Kodak Gap” just because of its beauty, which makes it a paradise for lovers of photography. Here are also small colonies of Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) and Antarctic shag (Phalacrocorax bransfieldensis).
The canal which is 11 km long separates the Kiev peninsula in the Antarctic Peninsula from the Booth island. In its narrowest point the Lemaire Channel is only 1,600 meters wide. The depth of the channel is kept constant at around 150 meters. The northern entrance of the strait is majestically dominated by the Cape Renard and the twin peaks of the Una Peaks (also known as Cape Renard towers). The highest of the two basaltic rock peak reaches 747 meters high.
ONE OF THE MOST SCENOGRAPHIC PLACES IN ANTARCTICA
These spectacular peaks dominate the landscape along the coast of the channel overlooking the Antarctic Peninsula. In this part of the canal it is also a bay at the end of a large glacier, the Hotine Glacier. On the opposite side of the Antarctic coast is Booth island, whose morphology is characterized by a rugged coastline that rises up to 980 meters of Wandel Peak. The southernmost part of Lemaire Channel is often locked, even during the short Antarctic summer, from the presence of huge floating icebergs.
Lemaire Channel, Antarctica. Author and Copyright Marco Ramerini:
This area of Antarctica was explored for the first time between 1873 and 1874 by a German expedition. The Lemaire Channel was crossed for the first time only in December 1898 by the ship Belgica of the Belgian Antarctic expedition led by Adrien de Gerlache. The canal was by him named in honor of Charles Lemaire (1863-1925), a Belgian explorer of the Congo, a former colony of Belgium in Africa. Cape Renard, located south of the large Flandres Bay is conventionally known as the place that separates the Danco Coast (north) by Graham Coast (south) on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

About 10km down the canyon of the Río Choqueyapu from the city center, Valle de la Luna is a slightly over-hyped place, though it’s a pleasant break from urban La Paz. It could be easily visited in a morning or combined with another outing such as a hike to Muela del Diablo to fill an entire day. It isn’t a valley at all, but a bizarre, eroded hillside maze of canyons and pinnacles technically known as badlands.
Several species of cactus grow here, including the hallucinogenic choma (San Pedro cactus). Oh, YEP.
Unfortunately, urban growth has caught up to the area, making it less of a viewpoint than it otherwise might be.
Inti Travel offers round-trip guided trips to Valle de la Luna and Chacaltaya (US$ 42), with a pickup from Iglesia Maria Auxiliadora at 8:30am.

Sad History:
Bolivia's largest city, La Paz, is currently enduring its worst drought in a quarter of a century. Glaciers in the surrounding Andean mountains are key to its water supply. Simon Parker visited the abandoned ski resort of Chacaltaya, where locals say they have been seeing changes in the climate for decades.
Surrounded by shards of rusty shale, sticky tufts of pampas and a few hundred hardy llamas, Chacaltaya sits crumbling next to a vast furrow in the mountainside: the site of a once mighty glacier.
The glacier on Chacaltaya served as Bolivia's only ski resort. It was the world's highest lift-served ski area and the northernmost in South America as well as the world's second most equatorial after Maoke, Indonesia. The rope tow, the very first in South America, was built in 1939 using an automobile engine; it was housed in the site's original clapboard lodge, and is now inoperable.
The road to the base of the 200-meter (660 ft) drop is reached by a narrow road, also built in the 1930s.
Traditionally, due to the extreme cold weather, the lift operated exclusively on weekends from November to March. Since 2009, skiing is restricted to a 600-foot (180 m) stretch that sometimes receives sufficient snowfall for a run during the winter.
The mountain is also popular with amateur mountaineers, as the road stops only 200 metres (660 ft) from the summit. Guinness World Records considers the ski resort restaurant to be the highest restaurant in the world.

This chrome sculpture is by the very talented Sean Guerrero. Love his artistry and creativity! This area used to be quite rural some 50-60 years ago. It was mostly fields and there was a little airport called Phoenix Field nearby. Now, roads are being widened here and more development is happening. To me, seeing this sculpture is fitting for the area and is a lovely reminder of the way I remembered the area in years past.

Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is situated about 10 kilometers from downtown La Paz, in the Pedro Domingo Murillo Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia. It consists of an area where erosion has worn away the majority of a mountain, composed primarily of clay rather than rock, leaving tall spires. It is similar to another zone of La Paz that is known as El Valle de las Animas (The Valley of the Souls). It is an important site of the famous holiday, Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
Because the mineral content of the mountains varies greatly between individual mountains, the sides of the mountains are different colors, creating striking optical illusions. A majority of them are a clear beige or light brown color, but some are almost red, with sections of dark violet.

Miraflores
In the 7th District, Miraflores district is separated from downtown by a long barrel (Parque Urbano Central, "Central Urban Park") and connected by the Bridge of the Americas and two avenues. Originally a residential zone, its growth has led it to become a major recreational center. It houses universities (including the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés's faculty of medicine), hospitals and the Estadio Hernando Siles (capacity of 45,000 people).
Take some time off from the hustle and bustle of the city and visit Muela del Diablo, a distinct rock formation formed by an extinct volcano plug. Translated as the ‘Devil’s Molar’ in English, the formation was named due to its peculiar shape when viewed from certain vantage points. You can walk to the attraction in no more than half a day, regardless of your trekking experience. Enjoy the rewards of your efforts with awe-inspiring views of La Paz and the surrounding valleys. A visit to Muela del Diablo represents just the start of the adventure when you use our La Paz sightseeing website to plot your vacation.
About the mountain up there in the middle, Huayna Potosí from where I am:
The first ascent of the normal route was undertaken in 1919 by Germans Rudolf Dienst and Adolf Schulze.
Some climbing books report this mountain as the "easiest 6000er in the world", but this claim is debatable. The easiest route entails an exposed ridge and sections of moderately steep ice, with a UIAA rating of PD.
There are many 6000m mountains that are easier to climb in terms of technical difficulty. Perhaps therefore, the main reason Huayna Potosí has been referred to as the easiest 6000m climb is that the elevation gain from trailhead to summit is less than 1400 m; with easy access from La Paz.
Since La Paz is at 3640 m, climbers have an easier time acclimatizing.

The work of famous Colmar sculptor Bartholdi in 1888, the fountain celebrates one of the city's heroes, Provost Jean Roesselmann, after whom it is named. The latter died in the late-13C defending Colmar against the troops of the bishop of Strasbourg.
It stands out the portal of the church, in carved stone, that is classified inside the denominated baroque mestizo (baroque mestizo). This hybrid decorative style, the work of indigenous hands, mixes European baroque motifs with native motifs.
The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de La Paz) also called La Paz Cathedral is a cathedral and minor basilica is located in the Murillo square of the city of La Paz in Bolivia. It was built in 1835 with a neoclassical architecture with Baroque elements. It has an interior distributed in 5 ships with different layers.
The first cathedral of La Paz was completed in 1692 after 70 years of construction; the first building was made of stone, lime and brick. In 1831 it was decided to demolish it due to the collapse of his presbytery and several cracks that threatened its collapse. The works of lifting the current cathedral began on March 24, 1835; in 1925 was inaugurated under the first centenary of the founding of the Republic of Bolivia, although it opened that year, its interior ornamentation still continued until 1932. In 1989, its two lateral towers were opened, coinciding this act with the visit Pope John Paul II.
