This eclectic edifice was built between 1856 and 1860 according to the wishes of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg (later to become Emperor of Mexico), and planned by Carl Junker. The interior furniture and decorations are genuine period pieces. The extensive park (22 hectares) is located on the seashore and was designed by the Archduke. The cliff it was built on, which had no vegetation whatsoever at the time, was cultivated with numerous tropical species of trees and plants.
AVisitors to the castle will be able to see the following: Maximilian's chambers and those of his consort, Carlota of Belgium; the guest rooms; the information room telling the history of the Castle and the Park's construction; the Duke Amadeo of Aosta's apartment with furnishings from the 1930's in the Rationalist style. All the rooms still feature the original furnishings, ornaments, furniture and objects dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy are the music room where Carlota used to play the fortepiano, now on show in room VII. In room XIX there are a series of paintings by Cesare dell'Acqua depicting the history of Miramare. Lastly, visitors may visit the throne room, which was recently restored and brought back to its former splendour.
parterreThe park offers the public a chance for an interesting stroll among botanical species and an important collection of sculptures dotted along its numerous paths. A visit should also be paid to the Stables, a building which was recently restored and is now used for temporary exhibitions; the Old Greenhouses and the Little Castle, with its original decoration on the first floor, are also well worth a visit.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Cœur is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. A popular landmark, the basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Sacré-Cœur is a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the excesses of the Second Empire and socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighborhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular vision of a loving and sympathetic Christ.

The castle of Kritinia (Kastello, for the locals) is a Venetian castle built in the 16th century on a hill about 131 meters above the village of Kritinia. It is fairly considered the gem of the village as it offers a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea, the island of Chalki and some other islets.
Due to its strategic location, that allowed a 360 degree monitoring view of the sea and thus, the pirates’and the enemies’activities, the site was chosen by the Knights of the Order of St, John to build the castle. Originally, the castle was divided in three levels, each of them belonging to a different Grand Master.
In 1480, the Ottoman Turks sent 100.000 soldiers across Rhodes in an effort to invade and conquer the island with a big number of troops sent to Kritinia as well, attempting to seize the castle. However, regardless of the fact that the Turks outnumbered the Knights a lot, and after many bloodshed battles, the Turkish troops finally retreated, leaving the castle full of ruins and damages. Without wasting time though, the Knights engaged themselves to restoring the damages that the castle had sustained, bringing it back to its original form.

Wow. I’ve only posted photos once since the start of the new year. Certainly the news was distracting there for a while. I, also, travelled back to Michigan over the holidays for 4 weeks and only took the camera out once. Upon my return I had to stay quarantined for 10 days, so I couldn’t go out and take any photos, then, either. Last weekend I did finally get out and I took a roll of Kodak Ektar color film to the Palace of Fine Arts, here in San Francisco, to capture some of the architecture, which I have shared photos of before. The sun was a bit harsh but this film is known for its ability to handle a lot of light as well as its smooth/fine grain. They came out alright. The scanning went smoother than it did with a previous roll.

Recently, I spent a week on Grand Cayman Island for a friend’s wedding. Since I enjoy scuba diving, and the Cayman Islands are well known for their dive sites, I made sure to book several charters. I ended up doing 8 dives, although I would have liked to have done more. I really wanted to dive the Kittiwake wreck, but, unfortunately, visibility was too poor, as the island had recently caught the edge of a tropical storm. I did several wall dives and some reefs as well. Here is a shot of some tube coral and some marine vegetation from one of the reefs. Due to the remnants of the storm, most days were overcast, so the lack of strong sunlight meant that most of my photos ended up with a strong blue cast.
