Translucent

Macro Monday week theme

October 12th 2020

Interesting theme this week that had me wondering if Unilever are right to call their "Pears" soap "transparent" (rather than "translucent"). As far as I'm concerned, their description stamped on the product just doesn't wash with me! Anyway, I quite like the stuff - here lit from behind with a torch.

Many thanks for all views, fav's - and particularly comments - all are greatly appreciated!

Happy Macro Mondays to you all!

Utah Honeycomb Calcite for the Macro Mondays challenge: Translucent. Area shown is about 45mm wide.

Honeycomb calcite, often referred to as the "honey stone," is the official state stone of Utah, designated in 2021. This unique mineral is exclusively found in the Uinta Mountain range, where it was discovered in 1995.

Appearance

Color: The stone exhibits a range of warm amber hues, from pale yellow to deep golden amber, influenced by sulfur deposits during its formation.

Translucency: It is known for its translucency, which allows it to emit a warm glow when illuminated.

A reel of 16mm film lit from behind with an LED flashlight positioned closely to create a spot of light, a change from my earlier backlit shots.

This color film has faded to a brownish-magenta hue. Curiously enough, the fading has no effect on the color of the light beam.

Yet another one from the collection. This time it's a vintage (although probably not too old) Japanese millefiori glass button, which is about ¾" wide. It's leaning against an opaque glass perfume bottle. I've gone for simplicity this time. :)

Lemons are irreplaceable in winter. Not only do they improve many foods and drinks, but they are also extremely healthy. Cakes, sauces and cocktails are refined with lemon and get that sparkling whistle.

I love the look of cherries. The translucent quality of this little group plus the fine cottonwood fluff that had landed on them just made them so appealing to me. Large really shows the details if you've time.

Thank you!

Strobist info:

Two Nikon SB900 and one SB700 speedlights, all with snoots, were placed 90-degrees camera left at camera level, and side-by-side, illuminating the dice and the background beyond. The two SB900's were closest to the camera and set to Manual mode @ 1⁄8 power. Furthest away was the SB700. It was also in Manual mode and fired @ 1⁄16 power.

The SB900's were triggered by three PocketWizard PlusX's; the SB700 was put in SU-4 mode and was triggered by the other flashes.
