Utah Honeycomb Calcite for the Macro Mondays challenge: Translucent. Area shown is about 45mm wide.

Honeycomb calcite, often referred to as the "honey stone," is the official state stone of Utah, designated in 2021. This unique mineral is exclusively found in the Uinta Mountain range, where it was discovered in 1995.

Appearance

Color: The stone exhibits a range of warm amber hues, from pale yellow to deep golden amber, influenced by sulfur deposits during its formation.

Translucency: It is known for its translucency, which allows it to emit a warm glow when illuminated.

A reel of 16mm film lit from behind with an LED flashlight positioned closely to create a spot of light, a change from my earlier backlit shots.

This color film has faded to a brownish-magenta hue. Curiously enough, the fading has no effect on the color of the light beam.

Yet another one from the collection. This time it's a vintage (although probably not too old) Japanese millefiori glass button, which is about ¾" wide. It's leaning against an opaque glass perfume bottle. I've gone for simplicity this time. :)

I love the look of cherries. The translucent quality of this little group plus the fine cottonwood fluff that had landed on them just made them so appealing to me. Large really shows the details if you've time.

Thank you!

Strobist info:

Two Nikon SB900 and one SB700 speedlights, all with snoots, were placed 90-degrees camera left at camera level, and side-by-side, illuminating the dice and the background beyond. The two SB900's were closest to the camera and set to Manual mode @ 1⁄8 power. Furthest away was the SB700. It was also in Manual mode and fired @ 1⁄16 power.

The SB900's were triggered by three PocketWizard PlusX's; the SB700 was put in SU-4 mode and was triggered by the other flashes.

Ulysses strikes a contemplative pose in this beautiful natural light portrait, his gaze directed off to the side with that thoughtful expression cats seem to reserve for moments when they're pretending not to be entirely focused on you. His tabby and white markings are on full display—the classic brown mackerel tabby pattern on his face and ears contrasting beautifully with that luxurious white chest ruff that's pure Maine Coon fluff.

The composition captures him sitting perfectly upright on what appears to be a gray couch or cushioned surface, his posture absolutely regal. Those white front paws are placed just so, like a sphinx guarding ancient secrets. The soft natural lighting coming from the windows illuminates his features gorgeously, highlighting the translucent quality of his backlit ears and bringing out the golden-green tones in his eyes.

Behind him, the domestic scene provides context—hardwood floors, white trim, framed photos on the wall, and that glimpse of everyday home life that makes pet portraits feel authentic. This isn't a studio setup; this is Ulysses in his natural habitat, clearly comfortable and confident in his domain.

What really makes this portrait work is how it captures his personality—that slightly aloof, dignified air that Maine Coons are famous for, combined with just enough softness in his expression to suggest he's not entirely above accepting attention. His fluffy coat is clearly well-maintained, with that distinctive Maine Coon semi-long fur that requires regular grooming but always photographs beautifully. The slight blur in the background keeps all focus on this magnificent feline, making it clear who the star of this household truly is.
