Down to the port for some cars. Had no inspiration for the cars, but found something else...

When I was a driver at First we would regularly 'borrow' vehicles for photo shoots, usually stuff that was ex works that we could get our hands on before they went about their daily business.

One such opportunity occured when Bolton depots allocation of Leyland Tigers aquired from Timeline Travel were transfered to the training school. A new livery had been devised for the training fleet and this was the finished result. Knowing that trying to get one for photos would be nigh on impossible once the novices were let loose with them this specimen was borrowed for an hour or so whilst we did what needed doing.

In the end all of Boltons Tigers became trainers whilst Wigans allocation soldiered on in service. As an added twist some of the earlier ones that had been sold by Timeline prior to the First takeover came home to Manchester within First from the Edinburgh and Leicester fleets. This one had been numbered 62 with Timeline and is seen here prior to First Manchester fleetnumbers being applied, I think this one was 405.

Photo I took a few years ago at the Manned Ship Model Training Center in Ilawa, Poland. There are other centers like this in Grenoble, France; Southhampton, UK: Massachusetts, and Australia. The one in Grenoble is the most famous and was the first such school.

Pilots go to these schools to practice their craft, learn new tricks, and experiment with maneuvers that one wouldn't want to try with a real ship.

Robert Thompson is standing on a model that is 13.5x2.38 meters (44 x 8 feet) and weighs 23 tons. For those of you who know boats that's a pretty good sized boat and very heavy. Much heavier than a similar sized yacht would be.

There is a real ship the model was copied from. It's a VLCC (a tanker) that measures 324 x 57 meters (1063 x 187 feet). For those of you who live in Houston that's about the size of the Transco Tower. We take ships almost that big here. The biggest on I have had was about 950x160 feet.

The ship is built to scale and powered to handle like a real ship. The motor of the 23 ton model you see is a little over half a horsepower (as in 0.50 hp).

Training on these models is the best shiphandling training in the world. A lot of people think computer simulators are the way to go, but there is absolutely no comparison.

Over recent weeks, the Driver Training School has undertaken a VIP escort training course for motorcyclists. Four riders took part in each course, which consisted of three days training and a final, day long assessment.

Motorcyclists undertake escort duties as part of their general role within the force; this can range from accompanying wide loads on the motorway to escorting football supporters to/from Luton Town FC.

However, VIP escort is slightly different; the riders have to ensure that the protected vehicle is in continual motion. One rider stays with the main vehicle, whilst the other riders go ahead to halt traffic. Once the vehicle has passed, the rider then overtakes the protected vehicle and moves onto the next junction.

The continual movement, changing environment and high speeds mean that each rider has to be fully aware of his fellow riders, the protected vehicle and the potential threats and hazards along the route – all of which can suddenly change.

These photographs were taken during the final assessment day when the riders were to escort a vehicle from Luton to Bedford via some of the towns en route. VIP escort is something that Bedfordshire Police Motorcyclists have undertaken over a number of years, and as collaborated unit, it is important that Roads Policing Unit is able to provide this service throughout Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

At Bedfordshire Police our aim is "fighting crime, protecting the public."

We cover 477 square miles, serve a population of around 550,000 and employ in the region of 1,260 Police Officers, 950 police staff and 120 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). For more details about the force, visit our website www.bedfordshire.police.uk
