CORONADO, Calif. (June 22, 2003) - Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) students participate in Log PT (physical training) during Hell Week. Log PT is a demonstration not only of physical strength and endurance, but the importance of teamwork. The intense physical and mental conditioning it takes to become a SEAL begins at BUD/S training. During this six-month mind and body obstacle course, recruits are pushed to their physical and mental limits. Further development of the core values, Honor, Courage, Commitment and Integrity, is an essential component of SEAL training and one that is weaved throughout a SEAL’s career. First phase is the basic conditioning phase and is eight weeks in length. Physical training involves running, swimming, and calisthenics, all of which become increasingly difficult as the weeks progress. The fourth week of training, “Hell Week,” is five-and-a-half days of continuous training with very little sleep. This week is designed to push students to their maximum capability both physically and mentally. The remaining weeks are spent in hydrographic reconnaissance and basic maritime training. Used over many years, the helium kite balloon provides a stable platform for the training of novice and parachutists.

This ex World War II barrage balloon is a large tethered kite balloon used to defend ground targets against aircraft attack, by raising aloft steel cables which pose a severe collision risk to aircraft, making the attacker's approach more difficult. The design of the kite balloon, having a shape and cable bridling which stabilise the balloon and reduce drag, meant that it could be operated with more wind than a circular balloon could. Some examples carried small explosive charges that would be pulled up against the aircraft to ensure its destruction. Barrage balloons are not practical against very high altitude flying aircraft, due to the weight of the long cable required.

In 1938 the British Balloon Command was established to protect cities and key targets such as industrial areas, ports and harbours. Balloons were intended to defend against dive bombers flying at heights up to 5,000 feet (1,500 m), forcing them to fly higher and into the range of concentrated anti-aircraft fire: anti-aircraft guns could not traverse fast enough to attack aircraft flying at low altitude and high speed. By the middle of 1940 there were 1,400 balloons, a third of them over the London area.

The balloon here was used for parachute training for territorial paratroopers which is an Army Reserve unit of the British Army and is based across the United Kingdom. Originally the Battalion covered the North of England, with its headquarters located in Pudsey, West Yorkshire. Following the Options for Change review in 1993, 4 PARA amalgamated with the 15th (Scottish) Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (XV PARA), which was downsized and became 15 (Scottish) Company of 4 PARA. As part of further changes in 1999 (Strategic Defence Review), the Battalion also merged with the 10th (Volunteer) Battalion which then became 10 (London) Company. Under the Army 2020 plan, it will form as a reserve air assault infantry battalion of 16 Air Assault Brigade.

Up to seven parachutists and a dispatcher could enter the gondola and connect their static lines to the anchor point. The flying cable was paid out and the balloon rises to a typical jump height of 250 to 300 meters (800 – 1000 ft). When certain conditions are satisfied, the trainees were dispatched and make their parachute descent from the gondola. On completion of detail the balloon was winched down and the cycle is repeated.

aircraft fire training during 2007 KY state fire school in Lexington... a jet fuel burn... I shot this at a shutter speed of over 1/1000 which I feel makes the flames look alive.

I spent a couple of hours to make few shoots for a friend of mine, when he was training with his waterpolo team. A different kind of photography for me, a style that I never did or be interested on. But it was fun! :-D

Wokefield Park, England

Currently Mansion House training center.

"Wokefield Park seems to have been built for the Brocas family sometime before 1777 when they acquired the property. Sir John Soane made alterations in the early 19th century onwards. However, the cellars have vaulting which may date from the time of the Treasurer of the Middle Temple, Edmund Plowden, who bought the house in 1569" - wikipedia

I had the wonderful opportunity to stay and teach a couple of week-long workshops here several years ago. It is really a grand and exquisite cultural place inside and out.

Emergency training for ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst

It is a scenario nobody wants to experience: a toxic leak or fire on the International Space Station. But astronauts living and working in humanity’s orbital outpost must be prepared for all eventualities.

ESA astronaut Alexander (white t-shirt) and NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman (blue) are practising dealing with an ammonia leak during training in NASA’s Space Station mock-up in Houston, USA.

This is just one of many simulations in the run-up to their mission, to be launched this May. Reid couldn’t wish for a better crewmate for these types of exercise – Alexander was a volunteer firefighter in his school years.

Lothian had already embarked on recruitment drives but the 'disappearance' of McGill's from the former SMT West Lothian routes has somewhat increased training efforts. The standard 'T' fleet has been augmented by buses from the service and spare fleet and one that stands out is fleet 195, a Volvo B7 with a smart livery which was used up till recently by Lothian in the guise of East Coast buses. This and its counterparts had commenced work at North Berwick shortly after Lothian stepped in to provide cover for Firstbus abandonment of bus services there. In its training role 195 is appearing throughout the network giving trainees experience of a variety of traffic situations together with route knowledge.

It pauses at Clermiston terminus west of the city. I'm not certain when this terminus was laid out, most probably around 1958 just after the housing scheme was built here much of the streets named from R L Stevenson's book 'Kidnapped' e.g. Ransome Gardens, Hoseasons Gardens, Durar Drive etc. For some years the terminus was in use by services 26 and 28 buses, and for many years by service 1. The area in the shadow of Corstorphine Hill where in Stevenson's book Allan Breck and David Balfour finally parted. Allan to France and David to the local bank which could be hard to find these days with many areas now devoid of them.
