The Jacobite is a steam locomotive-hauled tourist train service that operates over part of the West Highland Railway Line in Scotland. It has been operating under various names and with different operators every summer since 1984. It has played an important role in sustaining a scenic route.

The historic steam locomotive serial number 350 nowadays called Karoline was built in 1945 and belongs to a series that was developed for the Danish State Railways for use in large marshalling yards. It has belonged to the Geesthacht Museum Railway Association in Germany since 1980. (Photo from my son)

trains that pass in the night.

Imagine riding a train in a the beautiful Swiss Alps after nightfall. You look out of the window and enjoy the starry skies. Mars and Andromeda are shining in the sky and the Winter Milky Way is leading the way to a brightly illuminated stone bridge that boldly curves over a narrow valley.

Suddenly hold your breath, as you just realized that the bridge leads to nowhere and the tracks end in the middle of a vertical cliff. What a nightmare! You tremble with shock while the train races towards the bridge and crosses over it without even trying to brake. Then everything turns black - because you entered the tunnel at the end of the bridge.

Crazy story? Sure. Welcome to the Landwasserviadukt.

The old Kensington Train Station operated from 1905 to 1983. A national historic site, it is one of the few examples of a boulder station.

I came to this spot to photograph an industrial scene, which can barely be seen in the background through the heavy fog. Instead I got this shot of a train hauling limestone to a processing plant. Ironically, the industrial site is a place that produces white lime from limestone, and has its own quarry across the road. But I wanted to show the power of these locomotives for 117 pictures in 2017, #76 power/powerful.

Once the latest-and-greatest, premier intermodal train power on the BNSF, the Dash 9s have since been demoted to more mundane tasks. Warbonnet #773 is seen at University with USTAEDU5-10A, almost blocking our view of an out-bound grainer leaving Northtown Yard.

The 07.10 South Bank Tees Dock to Boulby Mine empties hauled by 66559 at Hunt Cliff. It was still dark when we set of walking here from Saltburn, and we were met by a brilliant sunrise as we walked round the edge of the cliff as we approached this point, and still enjoyed the early glow as the train passed

The very first mixed train to run on the ARR in over three decades is highballing north at track speed rolling through the junction at NSS Matanuska (MP 151.4 on the ARR mainline). Three SD70MACs lead a 2300 ft train consisting of 13 coaches (with 120 paying passengers), 7 COFC flats, and 10 loaded tank cars of diesel fuel operating as train 230N, the regular weekly Saturday northbound Aurora passenger train. This definitely isn't the kind of train out of Mixed Train daily that Beebe and Clegg would recognize!

The ARR is exercising an FRA waiver that I spearheaded along with General Road Foreman Bruce Pryke to run mixed trains allowing us to consolidate some traffic and operate as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. The ARR was always an innovator and not afraid to look to the past for solutions to problems in the present....it was a special place to work and I'm honored to have had the chance to lead there for a half dozen years.
