I tried to film the Winton Train a private but well publicised excursion which is running from Prague to London via Harwich Parkestone Quay at Chelmsford Station.
Sadly this train the 10:02 to Norwich was departing as the train hauled by LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado as it arrived southwards obscuring the view and that left many people this end of the platform bitterly disappointed.
The helicopter you can hear is following the train to London.
Tonight was one of those nights, while out house hunting, we had our camera gear with us, since we knew that sunset was not far in the future.
Little did we know, that a storm was also just on the horizon!
Just as the the last glow of the sunset was dimming, I heard what I thought was thunder.
I mentioned it, and we both then began to scan the sky....
Nothing
So we jumped in the car intending to go home,
but as we turned the first street, a anvil crawler burst out in front of us, steaking the sky!!!
That was it, we were now scurrying to find a good place to shoot from!
But where do you go when all there is is highway, shops, and ...oh what was that road?
A little road that went off towards an open area...
well relatively open....right beneath the electric power towers!
Sounded like just the right place to shoot lightening from to us!
Setting up quickly, just as we were about to start, a car heads our way...thinking how cool it would be to have car light trails in the forground to a possible lightening strike, I released the shutter, and what do you know...timing was everything, cuz just as the shutter was about to close, this lightening lit up the tower ahead of us!
It was brilliant!
Can't tell you how many times we both were looking up to the sky and watching the tower nearest us, just a few meters away...crossing our fingers.....

This is a photograph from the 4th annual running of the Donadea 50K Ultramarathon which was held in Donadea Forest, Stapelstown, Co. Kildare, Ireland at 10:00 on February 15th 2014. The race was also an International Association of Ultrarunners Bronze Label Event and the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) National 50KM Championships. Over 160 participants took part in the event.

The event took place on a 5KM loop of Donadea Forest Park (read more below). The recent stormy and very wet conditions in Ireland made way for perfect running weather for the race. There was a slight breeze here and there on the route but for the most part the route was very sheltered. With so much running traffic on the course certain parts of the course became more muddy as time went on. However, this bother the participants who were expecting conditions to be much more difficult.
Congratulations to Anthony Lee of Donadea Running Club and Donadea Running Club for putting countless hours of voluntary effort into the staging of this event. The event has all the hallmarks of a professional event. There was a superb atmosphere around the loop as locals and other runners supported the runners.
Donadea Forest Park is situated in rural north Kildare and is approximately 640 acres in size. The amenities at the forest include good walking trails, a diversity of natural habitats, a walled stream, a large natural lake, and the ruins of Donadea castle. The Park is a designated National Heritage Area. The basic designation for wildlife is the Natural Heritage Area (NHA). This is an area considered important for the habitats present or which holds species of plants and animals whose habitat needs protection. It is a special event to allow the 50KM to be held in this environment.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

The S85B50 is a high-revving engine designed to utilize power from a wide rev band. Having a redline of 8250 rpm, it achieves over 100 bhp (70 kW)/litre and features a very high compression ratio of 12.0:1.

With hindsight it was not the most auspicious timing for a premiere. In October 1928 – just a year before the start of the Great Depression – the 18/80 hp Mercedes-Benz Nürburg 460 (W 08 series) made its debut at the Paris Motor Show. Generously proportioned in every sense, the vehicle was aimed essentially at a wealthy clientele – not perhaps the most “opportune” customer base given the circumstances of the day. But then there was always the alternative perspective, for although the well-off had lost considerable amounts of money on the turbulent international markets, many had managed to manage their finances with care and put enough to one side to buy a new car - and make a statement in so doing. Then as now, a Mercedes-Benz was considered a sound investment. And for Mercedes-Benz the story had a happy ending, since in relative terms the W 08 enjoyed great popularity in the luxury and prestige class over a production lifetime of eleven years.
The Nürburg – as the vehicle became more familiarly known – was the last pillar of the new joint model programme following the merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz AG.
It was seen as the successor to the 15/70/100 hp six-cylinder supercharged model and underwent a hurried development under the supervision of Ferdinand Porsche. Other brands were already enjoying considerable success in the luxury vehicle segment, not least among them the Horch 8 produced by the German competitor Horch, a vehicle developed by none other than Paul Daimler after Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft had originally rejected his design.
The Nürburg was the first series model from Mercedes-Benz to feature an eight-cylinder engine. For this reason it was often referred to in some publications as the Nürburg 8, and the cover of early catalogues is adorned with a golden figure 8 embedded in a lozenge shape. It was christened the Nürburg not as a reference to any particular sporting ability, but rather as a tribute to its reliability – during endurance testing on the Nürburgring the vehicle had clocked up 20,000 kilometres in just 13 days and nights.
Built initially on a high-frame chassis, there was much about the Nürburg that resembled the stocky and impressive fortress its German name suggested. Yet at the same time it was rather old-fashioned and antiquated in appearance; vehicle construction and design had moved on and adopted new laws. Soon after its debut, therefore, the model underwent a thorough revision and was equipped with a low-frame chassis – one of the first tasks of Hans Nibel, Daimler-Benz’s chief designer who succeeded Porsche on January 1, 1929. The now much more visually pleasing Nürburg was again presented at the 1929 Paris Motor Show. The lower-slung vehicle had a longer, more elegant look, and was now every bit the equal of its competitors in terms of external appearance.
The power unit was an eight-cylinder in-line engine developing 80 hp (59 kW) from a 4.6-litre displacement in combination with a four-speed transmission. By popular demand it was joined in 1931 by a more powerful variant that developed 100 hp (74 kW) from a 4.9-litre displacement. This model was not officially available until later as the 19/100 hp Nürburg 500; for the not inconsiderable surcharge of 2,000 Reichsmark this variant came not only with the more powerful engine, but also an economy gear or “overdrive”, engaged to reduce engine speed for each of the four forward gears, and high-quality, high-performance Zeiss headlamps. From September 1932, an overdrive was also available on the 460 model at a surcharge of 1,400 Reichsmark.
Whereas the 500 was produced solely as a long wheelbase version, the 460 model was additionally available as a 240mm-shorter version bearing the additional designation letter “K” – not to be confused with the “K” in the name of the later supercharged vehicles. The shorter chassis was 50 kg lighter and fitted with 4/5-seat bodies, available as a saloon, open-topped tourer and Convertible D. The low-frame variant of the 460 K was also still available as the “St. Moritz” special convertible C. This model acquired the illustrious name of the winter sports venue in the Swiss Engadine region after the car beat all other competitors in an automotive beauty pageant in early 1930.
One special version of the Nürburg 460 built on the short chassis did not appear in any brochure or price list: a two-seater sports roadster, two examples of which were used in motorsports events. In the international Alpine Rally of 1929, Rudolf Caracciola and Otto Merz covered a distance of 2,660 kilometres in these unusual sports cars, as well as completing the eight-hour ADAC long-distance race for non-supercharged touring cars on the Nürburgring.

As we approached the port in Nawiliwili, we passed the Ninini Point Lighthouse at the entrance to the cove, warning ships of the rocks that guard it..
It just so happened that from where I was standing, on Deck 12, starboard, midships, at that exact time of day, at this exact moment, the sun passed directly behind the top of the lighthouse, making it look like the brightest lighthouse on the planet.. I saw it coming, and I couldn't resist..
I kinda can't help thinking now that it looks like someone detonated a thermonuclear device at the top of a tower, and guess actually, that's kinda what it is! It's nowhere near the tower, but it (the sun) *is* a kind of thermonuclear device..

In 1971 a team of Soviet engineers accidentally drilled through the roof of a natural gas cavern, which collapsed, leaving this crater 70m across. Too big to cap, they decided to burn off the gas to make it safe, expecting it to last a few days.
It is still going, over 40 years later.

This is a set of photographs from the 10th annual running of Liffey Valley Athletic Club's Annual Tom Brennan 5km Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the Phoenix Park on Thursday January 1st 2015 at 12:00. The race was attended by about 500 runners who took on the challenge of the 2 loop course. Whilst the weather was very mild for this time of year there was a very strong wind on some parts of the course. Otherwise the course is flat and fast. There was a great atmosphere in the park with spectators and walkers out cheering on the runners despite the weather getting poorer with each passing minute. This race is the first race in the Lord Mayor of Dublin's “5 alive challenge”. The Liffey Valley Club and many other volunteers work hard to make this a very successful event. It provides a splendid opening of the New Year for runners of all abilities.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. Great timing for this shot! The Clock Tower (in which Big Ben was chiming the hour), New Palace Yard and, to the bottom right, the blue Police Box for the POW (Palace of Westminster) officers manning the Carriage Gate entrance. The box, although not the standard type used in the streets, had the usual heavy black Bakelite telephone. On a quiet evening, when the House was in recess, as in this photograph, I had my transistor radio in the box and would stand outside, with the box door open and listen to the six o'clock news on the BBC. What always fascinated me was that the chimes of Big Ben coming from the Clock Tower took longer to reach me that those on the wireless. Perhaps time in New Palace Yard had two dimensions!

The $25 Snapping Turtle...Sue's Photo & Description:
Traveling down highway 40B we saw something on the road. As we got closer we saw this snapping turtle. This is a very busy highway at times so we stopped and I got out of the car. another car was heading right for the turtle. To make this long story shorter...I took off my sweater and placed it over the turtle and picked it up. I took him across the road in the directing he was heading. No one told me that turtles stink...I mean really stink. Off to Walmart to get a new sweater...no good deed goes unpunished :) Yes, it was a big one and very heavy...that surprised me.
route 46 Morris Cty, a desolate strip, once a thriving working class hub with mills and small shops. now houses many near failed businesses.. oh - also Kenvil Power Mower.
This is a photograph from the 60th Anniversary Commerative Half Marathon for Tullamore Harriers AC which was held on Saturday 31st August 2013 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland at 12:00. This was a really great event and there couldn't be any fault found with any aspect of the race. There were stewarts all along the route, 3 drink stations with bottled water, superb facilities, and great after-race refreshments. Tullamore Harriers and the local community really worked together to make this is a wonderful event.

This race celebrates the 60th Anniversary (a Diamond Anniversary) of the foundation of Tullamore Harriers AC. The club was formed in the town in November 1953. However, it was almost 1979 before facilities close to what we see today open in the present day site. Over 50 provincial and national athletics meetings are held at Tullamore Harriers every year. The facilities available combined with it's central geographical location joing routes from North, South, East, and West make it a very attractive venue. The race today brings competitive national road racing back to The Harriers. In the past there was the famous Quinnlan Cup
Festival of Races (see a link below for some nostalgia) which was one of Ireland's Blue Ribband events. Today, the facilities at Tullamore Harriers are the envy of many athletics clubs in Ireland. The facilities provided by Tullamore make it one of the premier venues for local and national level athletics in Ireland. There is an Olympic standard tartan track, a fully equipped gym, changing facilities, press and media facilities, meeting room spaces, etc. The club also provides a social center and niteclub which makes "The Harriers" a very well known on the local social scene. Esssentially, the town of Tullamore would be a different place if it weren't for the presence of Tullamore Harriers AC.
Overall Race Summary
Participants: There was about 500 participants of runners, joggers, and walkers.
Weather: The midday start seen warm pleasant conditions for running. The layout of the course meant that there was a stiff breeze into the face of competitors for the first few miles. When the race turned around to return to Tullamore the wind was more favourable to runners.
Course: The race starts on the Charleville Road just outside the entrance to Tullamore Harriers. The race proceeds south along the R421 and onto the N52 before taking a route onto local back roads. The race then completes a large rural road route before it joins to the R421 again and the final 1.5 miles are the same as the first mile of the race. The runners enter tullamore stadium and complete one lap of the tartan track before the finish line. The course is challenging in places with some undulations along the route. But overall it is fair course.

Refreshments: There was a very impressive selection of refreshments including sandwiches, cakes, home-made breads, etc in the Harriers clubhouse afterwards. People were able to enjoy their post race refreshments outside in the warm pleasant sunshine.

Air Berlin A330 D-ALPI taxies past the spectators terrace at Dusseldorf in June 2012 complete with BER titles describing Berlin-Brandenburg as Europe's most modern airport. This is a effectively a major expansion of Schönefeld, the old East Berlin airport.
A dubious claim as six years later it is still not open and it won't be until 2020 or even 2021. Meanwhile Air Berlin have gone to the wall and the terrace from where I made this photo closed back in 2015.
The A330 shown started life with LTU, and after Air Berlin's collapse was put in storage, but in June 2018 found new use with Malaysia Airlines.

Timing on a human jump shot is much easier than catching a fish in the air but I finally did it. They were munching on bugs all afternoon.
Cam timing / dialling in .Dial gauges in place and degree disc set up . TDC found ..... many hours adjusting those adjustable pulleys follow !
