Japanese Friendship Garden Balboa Park, San Diego. I'm participating in the "no flower challenge" which means for at least 5 days I can't post a flower shot. It's actually easier than I thought.
Watched the first dragon boat race of the day at the Arundel festival. As can be seen the paddlers were inexperienced and had difficult keeping time.

I finally got a shot that I have wanted to get for a long time. One on the list you can say. The difficulty has always been that if you are a very early morning commuter you know that a 5-10 minute delay could really mean 30 plus minutes of congestion later along with finding safe parking around train tracks. This morning I lucked out. The sunrise was coming up, the light was on the rails and I had a camera with me, well an iPad. I still envision getting this shot differently but for now I'm happy that I still can chase that light.
Had great timing to get one of the huge freighters in the position I caught it in, despite getting poured on by rain in freezing temperatures, still had a good time out taking pictures.
A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 is caught leaving Las Vegas (McCarran) Airport.
I just caught it as it was about to disappear from view. A fraction of a second earlier or later would have produced an entirely different picture.
My wife and I had been chasing this eastbound empty coal train on the Ex-NP MRL from Plains, MT. There were numerous showers in the area. We got to Marent Trastle (highest on the NP) and waited...and waited. A minute before the train arrived, clouds had obscured the sun. I could see sunlight starting to creep up the trestle bents, but would it get to rail level before the train? The answer is obvious. Better lucky than good.
I had been in a pasture exploring the old yellow barn and fighting off "LOTS" of these little buggers, get back in my car and see that this one hitched a ride!

An outbound LIRR train climbs out from the tunnel and up onto the elevated structure of the Atlantic Branch. In the background, a two-car Franklin Avenue Shuttle train crosses Atlantic Ave. I had literally just been talking with my friend about how I'd probably have to scour the timetables to get the over/under here, but it turned out that I got it on the next train!

Or you wander around Copenhagen and decide to have a look at the Place when suddenly there are loads of people and police and there's music....

At Amalienborg Palace, the royal residence in Copenhagen, the Royal Guard, mounted by the Kongelige Livgarde (Kings Life Guard)is on duty for 24 hours.
The size of the Guard and musical support is dependant on who is in residence at Amalienborg Palace:
Kongevagt (King's Watch) when the Monarch is in residence the Guards are accompanied by the Royal Guards music band.
Løjtnantsvagt (Lieutenant Watch) when Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik or Prince Joachim are residing at Amalienborg in the capacity of regents the Guards are accompanied by flutes and drums.
Palævagt (Manor Watch) when the Crown Prince or Prince Joachim are in residence but not in the capacity of regents or the Palace is uninhabited the Guards march through Copenhagen without musical accompaniment."
So regarding to this (slightly outdated) article I was able to observe the Løjtnantsvagt. It was quite a show

Finally caught him backlit after many missed shots. Flashpoint 200 behind him on a tripod and a 600 on the fence behind me, both set at 1/4 power.

The perspective was deliberate ... The central core of the Lanes shopping complex in Carlisle. The building has a full height central atrium, and clerestory glazing lights the three floors of the interior.
I took this shot in Panama City Beach this fall. I love it when the timing of a shot works out just perfectly. Here is a Brown Pelican with a seagull nicely placed behind.
At first sight the church of All Saints at Wilden, just to the north east of Stourport on Severn, may not appear to be anything out of the ordinary, a humble Victorian brick church with a bellcote, consisting solely of single aisle nave and chancel with little structural division. But within lies one of the most beautiful sets of windows in the Midlands, a complete scheme by Morris & Co from designs of Edward Burne Jones, dating from 1902-14.
The church itself was built in 1880 by the architect W.J.Hopkins and funded by Alfred Baldwin, whose family church this became; they lived nearby and were major industrialists, owning the nearby ironworks. Baldwin was married to Louisa MacDonald, whose three sisters also had notable marriages, to John Lockwood Kipling (father of Rudyard), the artist Edward Poynter and, most significant of all here, Sir Edward Burne Jones. This collaboration of dynasties resulted in the superb windows at Wilden church, though all were installed after the death of Burne Jones himself.
A detail of the east window appears to show the Archangel Raphael with the young Tobias from the Old Testament story, though the boy is reputedly a likeness of Alfred Baldwin's son and Burne Jones's nephew, the future Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.
The windows are exceptionally beautiful and richly reward a visit to this unassuming building. Most are designs reused from the great stock of Burne Jones's drawings held by Morris & Co, and which appear in many other windows across the country. A particularly notable two-light window has his familiar figure of Joshua in armour, balanced by a charming panel of pure foliage (apparently arising from a problem with indecision on the part of the donors as to who should be portrayed here, but a very happy accident I think).
The church is generally kept locked except for the first saturday of each month (and school holiday wednesdays), otherwise an appointment will be necessary to gain entry.
This was my 2nd visit, and I inadvertently turned up an hour early, but as luck would have it the nice lady opening up the church that morning also arrived an hour early (owing to there being a wedding later that day) so in the end my timing couldn't have been better (and she very kindly made me a cup of tea too, so hospitalitiy here was much appreciated! :-)
