I believe this is the first time I was able to catch a train coming under the DeKalb coal tower at the exact time the setting sun was shining through one of the windows of the coal tower. There is only a minute or two of opportunity for this, so even though the sun was a little muted due to clouds, the timing was just perfect on this 8-29-17 date.

There are some photographic challenges unique to coastal environments which can ultimately make or break a photo. For a given composition to work, you not only need the right time of day, but the right wave from the right tide, which may only happen once a week...ideally with a half-decent sunset. I'm pleased to say this one worked out!
Also, a thank you to Joseph Rossbach and Kurt Budliger for serendipitously holding a workshop in the area. If I hadn't noticed a dozen tripods from their workshop the night before, I might have missed this location.

A series of images taken on a circumnavigation of Derwent Water in the English Lake District on an overcast day in May 2022.
I wanted the launch in the middle of the gap but needed a faster shutter speed and missed it faffing with the camera.
The WLMNTW (Willmar, MN to Northtown Yard) manifest heads east out of Waverly with a GP50 on point with a pair of SD40-2s behind it. Here they pass the iconic barn east of town. I got word this was coming east, so I decided to try this shot of the barn off Highway 12 for once. I came here from the east to shoot the train, and no sooner than 15 seconds after I arrived the train appeared. Probably some of the best timing I've had with a train.
On a cold, Winter day, the fog briefly lifts to reveal this beautiful scene, before closing-in again a few minutes later! --- Rannoch Moor, Highland (Jan 2012).
During our Iceland tour we decided to see some whales and so we
booked a whale watching tour tour in the town of Húsavík. This place is famous for its whale watching excursions which can take several days if you have enough money and time to spend.
So we took the three hour tour ;)
At least they promised a 99% chance to see a whale.
I was not sure about that 99% when we took of in the harbour. A few minutes later we saw the first humpback whale spraying and our boat took direction to where the spray came from. It took us not long to find several humpback whales. Some of them came really close to our boat. Another one even jumped out of the water. That was so amazing to watch that I forgot to make a photo... I would have been too slow anyways.
In the end we saw at least a dozen humpback whales, several minke whales and a lot of dolphins. That was worth every penny! If you haven't seen any whales before and you visit Iceland please make sure to find some time for such a tour.

It was previously announced by Integrity Toys that the main brands won’t be unveiled anytime soon due to timing issues caused by several factors. But it was only last week that both Fashion Royalty and NU.Face were announced as the next two brands that will be unveiled on June 24th, Saturday. So IT really surprised us here. This was a bigger deal than I thought it would be since we were expecting something other than these two core brands. This is the main event that everyone is waiting for every single year. There are a lot of things that are new and as announced late last year there are some changes to the FR and NU.Face bodies for 2017 and that is the elimination of the waist joint, the rounded out knees and the introduction of the articulated flat feet. So that’s what we’re going to see starting with the mainline collections you see here. There was also a little surprise that we didn’t know of prior to this unveiling and that is the addition of last names to the characters who had none for years. Some of these newer characters that have been around since 2008, 2009 and 2011 were only known by their first names so this year is significant in Fashion Royalty history.
Moving along, we have the Nu.Face Heirloom Collection which is a sort of extension to last year’s big hit the Reckless Collection according to Integrity Toys resident designer Jessy Ayala. While this is a softer side of NU.Face I don’t think we can completely take the edge out of this line. After all that’s what we love about NU.Face.
First off we have Charmed Life Imogen Lennox. Her look doesn’t stray away from Reckless as the styling is still on the edgy side with her combat boots but what’s different in this collection are the jewel tones of the fashions and this kind of romantic element infused in their looks. Each doll comes with an item that is special to her and for Imogen that is her lucky brooch. Charmed Life comes with some fashion pieces inspired by Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2016. While they are introducing articulated flat feet this year I think it was a missed opportunity that they’re only doing it with one doll out of twelve and Imogen who has flat boots doesn’t even come with flat feet.
Next is the very high fashion Heiress Erin Salston who we are seeing for the very first time in the Latino skin tone. This isn’t the first time though that Erin is in a darker skin tone. She had the Hispanic skin tone in 2009’s The Making of… Erin. With the Heirloom theme, the NU.Face dolls inherited face designs that are reminiscent of FR in its heyday from icons like Going Public Eugenia and Paparazzi Bait Adele. I do have to admit I am partial to that idea. I am still in love with last year’s faces that I don’t know what to think about this. I’m sure the dolls look more beautiful in hand though. I just have to wait for their arrival.
The cut-outs, the color blocking and the sporty glam look on Neo-Romantic Rayna Ahmadi, I am all for this! Although this look fits Nu.Face perfectly, this is what I also want to see from FR which seems to be farfetched as they tend to be more on the feminine side most of the time. With the elimination of the waist joint the designers now have more liberty in giving the dolls fashions that reveal the hip and mid-section of the body. Some of the fashion pieces Neo-Romantic comes with are also inspired by Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2016 which you can mix and match to the fashions from the other dolls. While I am in love with the overall look, once again I am partial with the face design.
Fiercer than ever we have Vanity & Glamour Nadja Rhymes which is a reintroduction of the “Close-Up” dolls. These are the more basic and more affordable offerings that Integrity Toys create of mostly dolls in lingerie. This is reminiscent of the lingerie dolls from 2006’s Modern Pompadour sans the wigs that they came with. Although there isn’t really anything basic with this look, I think she is as good as Reckless’ I Slay Nadja. I simply adore the hand-held mirror that she comes with. I think it’s the perfect accessory for her. Somehow I love everything about her from her silver hair to her shrug but I’m not sure about the bottom lashes. Again they are reminiscent of The Muse Adele and Clash Control Erin but I feel like she can do away with them. For the first time we are seeing Nadja in the A-Tone skin tone which is the lightest she’s ever been. This is also a first in the NU.Face line. It’s somehow laughable to me that she’s wearing a vintage-inspired lingerie set similar to what she’s wearing the last time as if to annoy the people complaining about her lack of modesty.
Next is the Ginza Kyori-inspired Hauntingly Lovely Ayumi Nakamura. Another Close-Up doll which contrasts and the same time compliments Vanity & Glamour Nadja. She comes with her mother’s cameo ring and a hair brush with real bristles which I think would perfectly go with the make-up set that came with The Industry’s Beauty Boss Cabot Clark and East 59th’s Classic Glamour Evelyn Weaverton. Kudos to Jessy for setting Ayumi free from a stereotypical Asian look, I think this wouldn’t have come to fruition without him taking over the NU.Face line. I was really hoping for full bangs for Ayumi but I didn’t think of her as a blonde. The promo shots of her really showcase the newly revised body without the waist joint and it is definitely an improvement. Judging from the pictures I don’t think that we are really losing mobility as it can still do a hip bend pose. At least that we didn’t lose. I have to say, I think she has the best face design out of all the NU.Face dolls I’m just now realizing that. From the polls though she is the least popular, but what’s new? Ayumi is often underestimated and often comes out as a sleeper hit.
Now NU.Face wouldn’t be complete without these two, and once again it’s a blow away moment for Poetic Beauty Lilith and Eden Blair. They somehow always end up on top in terms of styling. These high-fashion looks are just mind boggling. There are a few fashion pieces here that were inspired by Louis Vuitton Fall 2016 Ready-to-Wear like Eden’s vest, the carrying cases that they have and Lilith’s transitional top that turns into a dress as well as her leather pants. The boots are inspired by Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2016. There’s also an Erdem Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear inspiration here with Eden’s dress which I think is one of the highlights of the set. The mini carrying cases that they have elevates the look even higher. I think those accessories alone make this duo-doll set a must-have. They both come with tasseled earrings which I love. I just wish there was a yellow version though. I wanted also to point out the make-up palette which for Eden is reminiscent of October Issue Agnes and for Lilith is reminiscent of Optic Verve Agnes. Can I say instant Holy Grail status? While I do like the Style Mantra/ Great Pretender face design, I think that the Wild at Heart face design would have given the entire line consistency as there are similarities in the style like the Upgrade Doll Majesty Giselle. With that being said they are beautiful as they are.
As a final thought on the Heirloom Collection, I was hoping to see characters that didn’t show up in the Reckless Collection and I would have loved to see the same Reckless face style on characters like Karolin, Annik, Dominique and Colette. Not that the chosen line-up aren’t good enough but I want these characters that I’ve mentioned given the spotlight since we haven’t seen them in a while. I could easily see Dominique wearing Heiress Erin’s fashion and Annik in Vanity & Glamour Nadja’s.
My first impressions on the Fashion Royalty 2017 Collection will be following next…

Back in early December, I watched the movie VIOLETTE. The movie featured Violette Leduc and her relationship with Simone Beauvoir. Learning that Leduc was praised, as a writer, by Camus, Sartre, and Beauvoir, I immediately ordered her autobiographical book. When it did not arrive anywhere near the time predicted, Amazon asked if I still wanted to keep my order active. I did. Then, as more time passed, I forgot about the book until it arrived, four months later, on my birthday!
It is a great book. It was a great surprise.

A Crosscountry Class 220 Voyager is seen passing through Small Heath with the 13:00 (19 late) 1O86 Newcastle to Southampton Central. Due to the late running of the Crosscountry service, Chiltern Railways service 1H45 from Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone, worked by 68010 "Oxford Flyer", was held by a red signal at this station just three minutes after leaving Moor Street, and left a minute late. However, this meant that I got a more interesting pic.
On another note, I imagine that most of the people who view this photo would rather be travelling on the chiltern service than the Crosscountry one...
These two Warrens in their white MUSTANGs had a crack at each other all race; enjoyable to watch.
