“Anyone whose goal is 'something higher' must expect someday to suffer vertigo.

What is vertigo?

Fear of falling?

No, Vertigo is something other than fear of falling.

It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves.”

(From " The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera)

Sometimes daydreaming along the Ganges provides a sensory disorder or a sensation of being off-balance and then a strong desire to fall.

To fall and forget everything, to confide in the holy waters like this young man diving at Scindia ghat in Varanasi (Benaras)...

A tree at Borah Creek Prairie. This shot used a ND8+ND4+Polarizer filter to extend the shutter time to a few seconds per shot. By averaging together numerous shots, this is a simulated several-minute-long exposure. If you look close, you can see a small rainbow in the clouds.

few things escape the wear and tear of life and those things that do need to be treasured

This old shack in Starks Maine, built in the 1800's has seen better days

A timeless Cotswold scene.

OK, so I know that we all love our shots to be viewed large, but this one kind of needs it...

I've wanted to do a star trails shot for a ages, but struggled to find a suitable location where you can compose the subject whilst including the North Star in the frame (so as to produce the big circles) and where the light pollution is relatively low (being only 25 miles outside London). This was the result of spending a rather spooky couple of hours at the ruined church at Ayot St Lawrence. I'd hoped for slightly clearer skies as the stars were barely visible to the eye, but overall I'm happy with the outcome.

Have a good Friday

Tech Stuff: 77x stacked exposures at F5.6, ISO 1000, 30s. This was the largest continuous set of shots that I managed with clear(ish) skies and / or no airoplanes! I light painted the foreground, which was already part lit by the moon.

For Monochrome Monday here's a steam bonus. This was one of the most epic steam shows of my life so here's another frame rendered in black and white.

Reading and Northern 2102 is leading a Fall Foliage excursion round trip from North Reading to Jim Thorpe and return. The stout 4-8-4 was built in 1945 and from the railroad's corporate website here is a bit of history:

The company, using parts from a former 76-foot Class I-10sa Consolidation 1923 Baldwin locomotive, created a fleet of 30 middleweight engines in the T-1 series. The goal of building these locomotives was to be able to haul both freight and passenger traffic along the rails.

The original Baldwin-built I-10 class, which were large 2-8-0 locomotives, would become the T-1 class, converted to much larger 4-8-4 engines by redesigning and lengthening the Boiler and replacing the Frame and Wheels with brand new parts. Baldwin supplied the parts, but the rebuilding was done in the Reading Railroad’s own shops right in Reading, PA.

She is seen here on historic 'home rails' of the old Reading Company sending smoke and steam to the heavens as claws at the wet rails starting 17 cars north after making a scheduled stop to pick up passengers here at the railroad's headquarters town at about MP 78.4 on modern day RBMN's Reading Division mainline.

Home of the RBMN's corporate offices, dispatching center, locomotive shop, and covered train shed for their OCS equipment Port Clinton is a railfan's delight with props galore like this signal bridge that was saved and reinstalled here (if anyone knows where it was originally I'd love to know) and the juxtaposition of old and new in the form of switch stands with a modern bow handles and old school colored lantern targets. Now fully equipped with a CTC signaled mainline there was virtually nothing here in 1996 when the RBMN chose this site for their new centralized headquarters and shop complex. When the Reading Cluster was acquired from Conrail in 1990 the only thing to be found in this spot was a lonely unsignaled switch in the middle of the woods.

«When you reach the top of the last dune hiding the Deadvlei, make time to sit quietly and absorb the timeless atmosphere pervading this unique scene.»

I so love this shot.

We went to Kirkwood for a little getaway with Anna's friend and my amazing sister in law. I am going to skip the July challenge photos for those days and pick up today or tomorrow.

We had such an excellent time. Memories I will cherish forever. Since I was just trying to relax, a lot of these were taken with my cell phone.

“Experientially, eternity is the state we experience when we are aware of the passage of time, but feel untouched by it. Timelessness, on the other hand, is the transcendence of time. There is no awareness of time at all, for there is no differentiation, and hence no change. Therefore, time is in the midst of now, but eternity is in the midst of time.”

- A. Hameed Ali

Please don’t feel untouched because in the case of brothers, Fabrício and Guilherme, time is our enemy!

I hope to have my new group up and running on Flickr next week, where you will all have the opportunity to participate for social change; Everyone a Changemaker.

Another of my Timeless by Vanessa Tong dresses. I don't know if these exist much outside Australia, but you'll have seen them cropping up fairly frequently in my feed over the past year or so. They are a simple style, and different prints are released every month or so, offering great variety in how and when they can be worn. I confess to being rather addicted to them, with certainly more than ten of them tucked away in my wardrobe (some of which you have yet to see here).

They're also cheap (this was $20 in a sale). And they have pockets.

Thank you for taking a moment out of your day to view my photo!! I appreciate your views, comments, awards and favs :) Have a wonderful day!!

Sydney has kilometres of foreshore to explore and enjoy. Sydney cities foundations are laid in sandstone and often you can find interesting ways that architects have used it throughout the city. This especially true in the area the Rocks, which houses some of Sydney's oldest buildings. Anyways, I watched a great sunset here and chatted with some locals about the differences between America and Australia. One of the guys told me this interesting story about how his brother lives in a remote area in the US and has his groceries delivered by drone! Can't wait to have my mail delivered by drone ;-)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Prompt: Ultra-realistic fine art digital painting of a grand Southern plantation-style mansion with towering white columns, and lush landscaping. The brick-paved dirt driveway curves through vibrant flowering azaleas, manicured greenery, and moss-draped oak trees. Parked prominently in the driveway is a black Ford Model T, rendered with meticulous period accuracy—shiny black paint, brass details, wooden spoked wheels, and vintage charm. The car sits naturally on the sunlit dirt-brick drive, casting a soft shadow beneath the massive oak trees. The entire composition emphasizes historical authenticity, crisp textures, and painterly realism. Style: Ultra-realistic fine art, historical detail accuracy, DSLR Mood: Elegant, nostalgic, and timeless Lighting: Natural daylight, soft shadows beneath oak trees, warm highlights on architecture and car Aspect Ratio: Vertical

Hidden geometry beneath Oostende’s iconic Westerstaketsel. One of the longest wooden piers from the late 19th century still stands. Underneath the pier, design, textures, tides, marine life, and time come together to tell the story of this enduring structure. I wanted to create a fresh perspective on a timeless landmark.

A long exposure in black and white capturing Manhattan from the river, with the Brooklyn Bridge stretching calmly across the frame.

The softened water contrasts with the sharp geometry of the skyline, where light and architecture tell a silent, timeless story of the city that never sleeps.

I wanted to give this image an oil painting effect to provide an antique look that perfectly complements the landscape of the windmills and the castle of Consuegra. In the foreground, you can see the iconic windmills, symbols of La Mancha, while in the background stands the majestic castle of Consuegra, adding a sense of historical fortitude to the scene. This treatment not only highlights the beauty and historical value of the location but also adds a rich and artistic texture, evoking classical painting techniques.

Imagine, as well, the epic battles that might have taken place in this setting. The windmills, with their imposing sails turning in the wind, could have witnessed legendary confrontations, while the castle, with its thick walls and defensive towers, would have served as a stronghold against invaders. This blend of history and fantasy brings an additional dimension to the image, inviting one to dream of knights and wars that might have unfolded in these lands.

This image, which looks like a canvas, will surely be displayed in many homes in the area, as it is a source of pride for the inhabitants of Consuegra and its surroundings. The combination of historical, artistic, and fantastical elements captures the essence of this beloved and admired landscape. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed creating it.
