The UK has over 4,000 miles of inland waterways. These canals and rivers flow through cities, past homes, offices and across the countryside.
According to Historic UK, the Chinese were the early pioneers of canal building. They built the Grand Canal of China in the tenth century. In the year 983, Chhiao Wei-Yo is thought to have invented the pound lock which is still used in Britain today. Most early canals were extensions to natural rivers.
However, Roman engineers in Britain had built the Fossdyke connecting Lincoln to the River Trent around AD50, for both drainage and navigation purposes.
In Britain, canal building came of age during the second half of the eighteenth century. It was this mode of transport that helped enable the industrial revolution.

A place of timeless beauty, Thousand Island Lake sits high up in the Sierra near Mammoth Lakes, California. In this shot I wanted to give a sense of the enduring wonder of the place so I included these ancient granite blocks. I also used a minute-long exposure to give an ephemeral feel to the clouds.

Are you suffering from long exposure overkill Flickr friends? I hope not :-) I can't resist the effect which slowing time gives. I mean this flow has spilled over these rocks for generations, millennia even. I'm sure you don't mind me borrowing a minute or two.

Although I took this photo last week in color.....I decided that the black and white conversion was a better option.
Since I was a youngster, I've watched a lot of John Ford films made in Monument Valley. As I saw this young pony alone in the field, I felt my blood stir and the scene took me back to my youth as if I were in a time machine.
As is so often the case - I went looking for a shot ... and I found something far more fulfilling.
In roughly two weeks, Carly will be gone forever. She's heading back home, and we had one last shoot yesterday. That's probably the best thing about photography, that I don't have to rely on my fallible brain to know what used to be. I get to have this little slice of a great day for as long as it survives.
We struck out for a new spot to shoot that I knew would make Carly excited, and we tried some new film that cooperated better than expected. This is probably my favorite shot from the day, a mix of an old building by a canal, an over grown film, and Carly's beauty make for a timeless image for me to hold onto when I miss her.
