London constantly delights & surprises me; it is very modern city on the one hand..but full of traditions and scenes from the past on the other. Sometimes i look out of a bus window onto a scene that seems it could be from a different era completely.
A study of a roof section of the Sydney Opera House.
The history of this incredible, beautiful building (inside as well as outside) is a fascinating read. Built from a discarded pencil sketch, even the Danish architect who designed it had no clue as to how to actually build it. What ensued was one of the most tortuous, overextended and over-budget construction jobs in history, which ended up getting paid off in one hit via nationwide lottery.
There was so much bad blood surrounding the architect that he was ultimately thrown off the project and disinvited from the opening ceremony. Still, the end result is one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, instantly recognizable to hundreds of millions of people - a truly timeless design.
Less well known is that it is covered with what are basically Swedish bathroom tiles - 1,056,000 of them, distributed over 1.62 hectares of surface area.
Zoom in for a closer look!
A B&W image capturing the upper section of the Marion County Courthouse located in Knoxville, Iowa. Constructed in 1896, this three-story building showcases Romanesque Revival architecture and is crafted from sandstone. Here, I am highlighting the central pavilion, which is adorned with corner turrets and intricate stone patterns. In my opinion, the monochrome processing truly highlights the various textures and wonderful details found in this building.

The Alaska Railroad had been running an extra work train for a few days picking up old welded rail and dropping new rail to be replaced by the rail gang this summer. On Friday the weather was horrible but the weatherman was saying Saturday would be a beauty. Not one to believe the weather forecast I nonetheless planned for what I hoped would be a good day of photography. My goal was to catch the rail train as they worked north from Brookman to Birchwood. The rail train in of itself is unusual but the fact that is was powered by 5 Geeps in three different schemes was the real stunner. # GP40-2s and a pair of GP38-2s powered this rail train as seen here at Brookman on what was an absolutely stunning morning.

Sunwapta River’s braided stream; forested hillsides; distant glacier-capped mountains above the treeline with peaks obscured by flowing clouds. Might have been any day in the past 50 million years, if not for the glimpse of highway.

I ventured out to a local woods yesterday, local being 10 miles from home rather than 40 miles. I had planned to go to the woods I’d been visiting all year in Northumberland, but given the area was still struggling with the aftermath of storm Arwen I didn’t feel it was right to go adventuring where the folks don’t even have electricity and the roads have just been cleared by the hard working farm community. I was looking for snow and there was reports that snow had fallen in Gateshead over the weekend so as the woods was inland and higher up in that area I thought there would be a good chance, but yet again I drew a blank. No snow yesterday so I ventured into my archive for todays photo. Taken two years ago from the top of Glaramara, a very snowy day January 2019. The late afternoon sun catches Honister crag and Hindscart, I decided on #bnw inspired by a fantastic photo on the front of #blackandwhitephotographymag taken by @jasondavisphotography a photographer I hadn’t come across before but I’m looking forward to looking into, just my cup of tea.
