First frame of a 3 1/2 hour night time lapse. This first frame was clear skies and later a fog rolled in and then only slightly cloudy as the sunrise arrived.

About 45 days of photos every taken at ~16 minutes interval There are no photos taken at night, or when the light elvel is too low. There are some missing daytime photos as well, perhaps because of weak batteries (I used a solar charger).

In total, there were about 1900 photos, at a resolution of 1600x1200, almost 2 GB worth of data.

This was an experiment with using a Kase Astroblast optical filter to make stars pop in a time lapse. I needed this for a work project, and while I can use Photoshop to enhance bright stars in a still image, I hadn't yet found a good way to do it for a time-lapse sequence.

 

I set the filter so that it covered the lens halfway, in order to avoid blurring the foreground. It worked okay, though there was still a visible dividing line where the filter started. I applied an adjustment layer over it in Lightroom, which minimized it.

 

Looking forward to practicing this more with my next camera. I think a less noisy sensor would really help here.

mounted a cheap keyring cam on the arduino to be able to make automaticly pictures for timelapses

only needed 5v, ground and one pin for the trigger

(Black areas on sides are added by the OpenShot video editor which forces video to 16:9 when converted to "Flickr-HD" target. Original video was made from photos cropped to 3:2 ratio.)

Night of the Persids. Took many many photos and many timelapses. Here's one. Check out the light on the trunk as the moon traversers the sky. These were likely 300 20 second images. The moon moves pretty quick in that amount of time.

My first attempt playing with the interval shooting setup on my Nikon. Good Start. :)

Those watching my photostream knew this was coming. I meant for this to be "the shot" .. after which I could sell my camera gear and quit, since I would have already won. But instead, I have a long tale of woe to go along with a technically flawed presentation of one of the most amazing sights on earth.

 

I knew with the lens, f/stop, and ISO I was using what my shutter speed needed to be to make this work. I had done it 4 or 5 nights earlier partly as a test, and partly because it was a great location for it. (See 'Tengeboche Skyline in Motion'.) I've done timelapses before, I've done plenty of night photography.. this should have been easy. So I set everything up and take a test shot, and poof.. it's all blown out. I double check.. yup, right f/stop, right iso, right shutter speed. But it was all wrong. Bah! Ok, manually shut it down by 2 stops, and try it again. Better, but still at least a stop too bright. OK, one more stop and it looks good. Nice balance between sky, stars, and mountains. At 18,500 feet, after having ascended 3,000 feet in the last two days, and at about 18 degrees, plus probably having a fever, it just wasn't making sense to me. Oh well, the histogram doesn't lie, so I locked in the timer, and let 'er rip.

 

I sorta dozed a little while the camera clicked away for about 2.5 hours, when my guide made me get up and head down the hill. I was a little annoyed at being cut short, but in all honesty I was pretty cold, and outdoors, and exposed, and should probably have headed downhill anyway. I found out later it was a balmy 15 degrees(f), indoors, 1,500ft below me. The next morning was when I figured out I had pulmonary edema (aka the lung version of altitude sickness) and would have been in fairly serious medical trouble if I had spent all night up at 18,500ft. But, between the edema and the altitude, I put my camera away for the next 2 or 3 days while we hiked hard to get downhill. (My brother in law had both pulmonary and cerebral edema, and my sister was starting to get pulmonary, so we were well-motivated to head downhill.) So, 2 or 3 blurred days later, I pulled my camera out to review what I had gotten during those chilled hours on the mountain.

 

Guess what? 3 stops (at least) too dark for most of the timelapse sequence. ARRRGGHH!!! There was essentially no mountains at all. Just stars swirling through the sky, which while cool, could have been done at sea level and in shorts at 80 degrees in Maui. It was then I realized that I had started the timelapse before it was truly dark out.. just in the fading twilight. Which is a horrible time to be trying to meter for a timelapse that will be lasting into the true darkness. Shoulda trusted what I knew I needed to use instead of trying to re-adjust while I was shaking with cold and fairly miserable all the way around. So instead I boosted these frames by about 3.5 to 4 stops, which is why the light -> dark transition looks so chunky and gross .. it's because it is. But, after all that, I might was well post it.

 

So, cheers to trusting your instincts, and to doing what you must to get the shot.. even if you miss the shot. :)

I took photos every 15 seconds and created a timelapse of the partial solar eclipse in Devon, UK. It was cloudy to begin with but the clouds lifted eventually and the timelapse gets better towards the end. The clouds caused the sun to be exposed differently in the images, hense there is some flicker - I tried my best to reduce this in Lightroom. I also tried to stabilise the images in After Effects.

My first attempt at a timelapse. Didn't have time for a nice long sunset as planned so instead set it up for my haircut. Not come out as well as I planned. Perhaps would've been better if i'd had a more drastic cut!
