El ángulo dorado

marca en la piedra sombras

de las horas que aguarda

un antiguo reloj.

Y la cúpula inmóvil

en el jardín se esconde,

callada entre los árboles,

mientras escucha el agua.

The name of my village, Markyate, refers to boundaries ('mark' and 'gate'). When you mark something out, you are drawing boundaries around it. Markers are signs pointing to these boundaries, many of them imaginary. There are plenty of these in the village.

This one, the rubbish bin, constitutes one of the strongest markers referring to the elapsing time - at least, when you are old as I am. The bins have to be put out weekly, and this is the rhythm of time you are part of, and this time is elapsing.

In the hour when mist still owns the pines, the forest holds its breath. Scrub oak burns red against the gauze of morning, each leaf catching fire without flame, while pitch pines rise like sentinels into a sky not yet decided. This is the Pine Barrens in its oldest mood — patient, amber-lit, indifferent to time — a place that has always known how to be beautiful without asking permission.

Thank you for visits. favs and comments, it's greatly appreciated.

Mount Washington Cog Railway, New Hampshire

The railway is still in operation, climbing Mount Washington in New Hampshire, USA. It is the second steepest rack railway in the world with an average grade of over 25% and a maximum grade of 37.41%. The railway is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long and ascends Mt. Washington's western slope beginning at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet (820 m) above sea level and ending just short of the mountain's summit peak of 6,288 feet (1,917 m). The train ascends the mountain at 2.8 miles per hour (4.5 km/h) and descends at 4.6 mph (7.4 km/h). It takes approximately 65 minutes to ascend and 40 minutes to descend.

Big Ben is the nickname of the Great Bell of Westminster, the hour bell of the Great Clock , hanging in the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster, the home of the Houses of Parliament in the United Kingdom.

The bell was named "Big Ben" after Sir Benjamin Hall, the Chief Commissioner of Works. Another theory suggests that at the time anything which was heaviest of its kind was called "Big Ben" after the then-famous prizefighter Benjamin Caunt , making it a natural name for the bell.

Big Ben is commonly taken to be the name of the clock tower itself, but this is incorrect - the tower is simply known as The Clock Tower. Sometimes, the tower is referred to as St. Stephen's Tower, but this title is not used by staff of the Palace of Westminster.
