Macro Mondays: 3

Three abacus balls in close-up with some background colors.

I used three :) speedlights: two of SB-200 and one SB-900 in remote mode.

The Eurasian three-toed woodpecker is 21–22 cm (8.3–8.7 in) in length, just a little smaller than the great spotted woodpecker. The adult has black and white plumage except for the yellow crown of the male. Neither sex has any red feathers. It has black wings and rump, and white from the throat to the belly; the flanks are white with black bars. The back is white with black bars, and the tail is black with the white outer feathers barred with black. Juveniles of both sexes have a yellow crown.[10]

The voice call of the three-toed woodpecker is a kik or chik

The breeding habitat is coniferous forests across the Palearctic from Norway to Korea. There are also populations in the Alps and the Carpathian Mountains.

Three-toed woodpeckers nest in a cavity in a dead conifer or sometimes a live tree or pole. The pair excavates a new nest each year.

This bird is normally a permanent resident, but northern birds may move south and birds at high elevations may move to lower levels in winter.

Three-toed woodpeckers forage on conifers in search of wood-boring beetle larvae or other insects. They may also eat fruit and tree sap.

These birds often move into areas with large numbers of insect-infested trees, often following a forest fire or flooding.

Setting Lake sunset scene. Scenes like this almost every evening are enough to almost make you forget the long cold winter of northern Manitoba and the mosquitoes. Almost...

Inspired by Anna :-) Couldn't walk past these in the shops.

A very different image from me today as a change from my usual nature images.

I don't normally take photos of people or man made objects, but whilst out walking along Bridlington Harbour early on a sunny winter morning I watched some of the sailing vessels coming back.

The sea was flat calm and the sun was low in the sky so I decided to take a few shots.

This one is of a coble, which is a tradional flat bottomed fishing vessel that operated along the Yorkshire Coast. They traditionally have a square sail, although all the ones still in use have a motor.

This one is called "Three Brothers" and is the largest still operating and, as far as I'm aware, is the only one that still has the square sail.

Obviously, this is not black & white, but I'll put it here for now.

Liverpool's 'Three Graces'. The Port of Liverpool Building, in the foreground, was the first to be built (1903-1907), the Royal Liver Building, furthest away, was the second (1908-1911) and the Cunard Building, in the centre, third (1914-1916). A century later they were joined, on the Pier Head, by the contrasting but impressive modern structure built to house the Museum of Liverpool (opened 2011) from which this view may be had (through glass).

Three grain silos behind trees in rural Goodhue County, Minnesota.

I have just spent the past couple of days as far as possible from everything in South Africa... in the middle of the Great Karoo... 80 km from the closest (one-horse) town!

Don't ask how we managed it... but myself and three friends were granted special access to the KAT-7 and MeerKAT radio-telescopes at the SKA (Square Kilometre Array) site... where one of the biggest scientific experiments every devised is currently being constructed. Once the project is completed (in a few years)... the 64 individual radio-telescopes (each with a 14 meter diameter dish) will combine to create the world's largest telescope... powerful enough to change the way that we understand the universe.

What an amazing experience it was... photographing these huge monster-mushrooms... under the billions of stars in our milky way... in one of the darkest and most remote locations on the planet!!

Thanks very much to Angus and Rob for organising this expedition of a lifetime... and also to Hougaard and Ohan... who joined us in this amazing adventure.

This four-image panorama of three of the original KAT-7 telescopes (the pre-cursors to the MeerKATs)... was captured about 10 minutes after sunset on Friday evening.

Stay tuned... there are many more photos to come over the next few weeks... and (as usual) I'll save the best one for last. :)

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is truly staggering. In scale as well as intricacy. And it attracts a modern kind of pilgrimage: one made with a camera.
