Me and my particularly talented friend Cat (of Catillest) have decided to try and get involved in all the interesting art stuff that’s happening in Croydon. So, we’ve started documenting the activity around the newly formed ‘Arts Quarter’ - which is right in the middle of things, just off of the high street and the clocktower. As far as I know, the Arts Quarter is the brainchild of Kevin Zuchowski-Morrison. Kevin’s the creator-curator of the RISE Gallery - which can be found in St. George’s Walk. If you're looking for it, you can't miss it.
There have apparently been over 120 paintings so far, and these are going to be rotated (i'm not sure how often). The whole thing was started off by a takeover from Ayaan Bulale's Femme Fierce. Femme Fierce is made up of about 35 artists - they actually broke a Guinness record for 'the largest spray paint mural created by a team'. They did this to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Care. And ain't that somethin'?
The Arts Quarter project faced an initial hurdle in the form of three (?) blokes who kept tagging over all the art. Kevin and said guys have apparently come to an understanding now, and I guess everybody's hoping that things are gonna stay… unedited. I'm not a street artist but the idea of respecting the work of your fellow spray painters and hip hop artisans seems like a…kinda fundamental thing.
Asides from Femme Fierce, other artists who've taken include Eska & Morgazmik, Decolife, Dan Kitchener, Artista, Mr Cenz and Gnasher. A lot of people are making comparisons to East London - Shoreditch, Hackney Wick etc. - I'd beg to differ, no comparisons are needed. Croydon's always had a strong scene, all of its own: shitloads of graffiti (usually not of the …sanctioned kind) plus the kind of atmosphere and urban culture that you can only develop in a concrete wasteland (OK, so it's not ALL wasteland). And dubstep was invented here - I saw that with my own eyes!
Re: the artist in some of the shots. We ran into this guy and his girlfriend working on one of the walls in St. George's Walk. Softspoken, he told us that he’d been diagnosed with autism and osteoarthritis (in his writing hand) and that 'didn’t rate himself much' as an artist. But he also said that he was 'getting on a bit’ and that it is never too late to express yourself in some way or another #DontDieWithYourMusicStillInYou
7 Days of Shooting/Week #21 - Playing Around/Special Story Sunday
The fingers belong to my friend Bill, who as well as the accordion, also plays flute, trumpet, guitar, banjo, mandolin and banduria. With another friend, we form a group playing and singing popular music of the five decades from the twenties to the sixties, with an occasional foray into a more modern era. Because my friends each play several instruments (I play only the keyboard) we can do all kinds of arrangements for voices and instruments. Our audiences, as you might guess, consist of older people in clubs, sheltered housing and nursing homes.
Playing together and entertaining is one of the greatest pleasures in my life.

Distinguished by exceptionally talented and highly individual dancers and a repertory of original works from an international slate of highly sought-after choreographers, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet seems to go from strength to strength. After their wildly well-received 2009 Festival debut, Cedar Lake returns to Charleston with a program of work showcasing the dancers' versatility and verve. Among the works to be performed are Violet Kid, a carefully calibrated explosion of energy and physicality from Hofesh Schechter, one of the UK's most exciting young choreographers; and Annonciation, a lush duet from the celebrated French dance maker Angelin Preljocaj. My neighbors were on vacation last week and Shorty and I were on watering duty. Their dog, Morgan, sent this note over for Shorty yesterday. Apparently she wrote it herself, she's quite talented. Silly Shorty can't even read, so I had to read it to him.
This girl one of the most talented people i have ever met. I just thought i would let as many people know as i could
This is Sano Yutaka, the multi-talented ownder and cook of Raku Cafe, a small and really nice 100% vegan cafe located near Tanimachi 9-chome station, in Osaka. Just come over, order some food and start a conversation, before you notice he will be grabbing his guitar and you will be singing bossa-nova together.
You can check Raku Cafe's homepage, or visit his blog.
it was a bit chilly that night. Not sure if that is the reason for Allan's fancy ReadyMade leg warmers (though I think he had them on for an earlier indoor show for KEXP, so...) but he's barefoot too so scrap that theory.

Deliciosa !!!!

This week's question was "what was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?"
I thought about this one for a long time. In the end, it always comes back to my family. My husband makes me laugh a lot and so does my 4-year-old son. Watching them play together also makes me laugh out loud often and all the memories I could remember of myself laughing involved either one or the other, or both so I centered my tag around family.
This week's technique was inspired by two very talented ladies: I used the wax melting (using a crayon) technique Claudine Hellmuth highlights in Collage Discovery Workshop and this beautiful art journal page by Ali Edwards that has inspired me for a long time. Besides the wax, I've also used acrylic paint rolled over with a brayer and green alcohol ink as well as several distress inks and brown chalk ink.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look.

I am combining Emily Falconbridge's art journal questions with trying a new technique each week. You can see the full list: here
