Our group of photographers came to an out-of-the-way location to photograph an abandoned swing bridge. When we arrived, these fishermen were just returning from the morning’s catch. They were generous in answering our naive questions about their fishing and took both pride and amusement in our gawking at the massive number of fish they had brought in. Yet another example of the incredible genuine friendliness of the people of the Delta.

The hockey players standing for this team portrait were a talented lot. Four—Sprague Cleghorn, Eddie Shore, Frank Fredrickson and Harry Oliver—would one day be members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Following the demise the year before of the Western Hockey League, the 1927 Stanley Cup final was the first featuring NHL teams only. It pitted the Bruins against the Ottawa Senators and turned out to be something like a war. The final was supposed to be a best-of-five affair but after Game One ended in an overtime draw league president Frank Calder altered the ground rules, stipulating that the series would not go beyond four games. In what turned out to be the final game, April 13, the Bruins' Lionel Hitchman and Ottawa's George Boucher initiated a fierce battle that ended only with the intervention of the Ottawa police. After Ottawa's Hooley Smith butt-ended Harry Oliver, Eddie Shore decided to deliver retribution unto Smith. Both players were tossed from the game. At the end of the game Boston's Billy Coutu assaulted referee Jerry Laflamme, initiating a bench-clearing brawl for the ages. The NHL banned Coutu for life, suspended Smith for the first month of the following season and fined Boucher, Hitchman and Jimmy Herbert. The game score was 3-1, Ottawa. With two wins and two ties in four games, the Senators were the winners.
It was the Senators' fourth Stanley Cup victory of the 1920s and the eleventh overall for Ottawa clubs following Lord Stanley's donation of his prized silverware. In the 93 years since the 1927 triumph Ottawa has never won another.
Many years after the unseemly events of April 13 Frank Fredrickson called the Coutu suspension a tragic episode and laid the blame on Bruins coach Art Ross. "Okay", he quoted Ross as telling his players, "the first man who gets that referee gets a $500 bonus." It was Coutu who took up the coach's challenge and, yes, Ross paid the $500 but Coutu was finished in the NHL. "I've never forgiven Ross for that", Fredrickson said.

Warriors on the ice, one hall-of-fame Bruin—Fredrickson—was a warrior of another sort: he is one of thirty-two members of the Hockey Hall of Fame who were also soldiers in the Great War of 1914-18. The story of these thirty-two is told in From Rinks to Regiments, Heritage House, 2018.

After missing the first two days of Texans training camp before agreeing to a five-year, $14 million contract Saturday, outside linebacker Brian Cushing is eager to get on the practice field today with his new teammates.
Cushing, the first-round draft choice from Southern California, is getting $10.435 million in guaranteed money to become the starter on the strong side and help improve a defense that ranked 22nd last season, including 23rd against the run.
“I’m just relieved and excited to have this done,” Cushing said. “I’m ready to play football and help the team win.”
Cushing (6-3, 262) was in Los Angeles when agent Tom Condon reached the agreement with general manager Rick Smith and director of football administration Chris Olsen.
Cushing’s contract could be worth a maximum of $18 million over five years.
In the fifth year of his deal, there’s a clause that could earn him an additional $4 million in an escalator bonus.
Odds are that Cushing’s contract will be extended before he enters the fifth season in 2013.
Smith and Olsen will have all eight of their draft choices under contract when the Texans take the field for the third day of two-a-day drills at their Methodist Training Center.
“It’s very important to have him signed,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “Rick and Chris were up at 3 in the morning trying to get it done. They’ve done a good job.
“Brian’s two days behind now, but he didn’t miss anything we did in the offseason program, so that’s a good thing. He wanted to be here while we were working on the contract, but he couldn’t.”
Rookies who have signed with the Texans report a week early for conditioning and meetings before practicing for the first time with the veterans. Cushing wanted to report with the rookies.
He was working out at Reliant Stadium last week when the Texans had to explain league rules that forced him to leave.
Cushing took what turned out to be a quick trip back to Los Angeles. He returned to Houston on Saturday afternoon.
Texans coaches are excited to get him on the practice field.
“We’re going to put the pads on (Sunday morning), and I know he’s chomping at the bit to get out there,” Kubiak said.
After the Texans used the 15th pick in the first round on Cushing, they inserted him into the starting lineup. He impressed his coaches in the organized team activities and minicamp.
“We like his presence on the ball,” Kubiak said, meaning Cushing has a knack for finding the ball and making plays. “He’s playing over the tight end, and we’re going to ask him to do a great deal. We think he can handle it.
“Brian’s very athletic. He’s physical against the run. He can rush the passer. He can drop into coverage. We brought him here for a reason, and we’re going to put him to work real fast.”
Frank Bush, who is in his first season as defensive coordinator, has to make calls that maximize Cushing’s strengths. The faster Cushing learns, the quicker Bush plans to utilize all his talent.
“We’re going to try to take advantage of all his talent,” Bush said. “Because he’s such a talented kid, there are a lot of things we can do with him.”
The coaches say they think Cushing has everything it takes to become a star at his position.
“Brian can turn and run with the tight end,” Bush said. “He’s big and strong enough to strike them at the line of scrimmage and nullify some of their speed down the field, so we’re comfortable with him in coverage.
“His ability also gives us a chance to be aggressive toward the quarterback. He’s a big guy who’s shown he can get there.”

▶ Renowned British writer, Michael Jackson (b. 27 March 1942), known as the Beer Hunter, died on 30 August 2007, of complications associated with Parkinson's Disease. He wrote about "my Parkinson's" in "Did I Cheat Mort Subite?," his final column for magazine All About Beer, published posthumously in November 2007.
"I am hoping that my next book will be an account of my dealings with Parkinson’s Disease. I have lived with Parkinson for many years, but I have only recently allowed him out of the closet. I find myself referring to ‘my Parkinson’s’. We do this, don’t we? We refer to our ailments possessively, as though we are staking a claim. Perhaps we are. Perhaps I am. I would rather him inside the tent, pissing out, than the reverse. Pissing, with excessive frequency and desperate urgency is one of his annoying habits. I cannot exclude him, so I embrace him. It is not the bear-hug of old buddies. We are more like heavyweights in a clinch, or even schoolboys locked in a playground fight."

This graduating senior sang the national anthem at the rally for the 71st Bell Game, the much anticipated football challenge between Lincoln and Washington high schools in San Francisco, California. The game is today, October 4th, 2 pm at Lincoln.

'Gifted and Talented programme' Public Speaking Competition
The event took place on Thursday 26 June. It proved to be both an entertaining and informative evening. For many of our pupils who prepared and delivered presentations, speaking to a large group of people was a new experience.
The competition winners were the Religious Education Faculty, whose great life was Jackie Pullinger - a British missionary who went to Hong Kong and worked in the Kowloon Walled City. Her work has resulted in at least 500 drug addicts being saved from their drug addictions.

In 1898 a Spanish artillery captain, Emilio de la Cuadra, started electric automobile production in Barcelona under the name of La Cuadra. In Paris, De la Cuadra met the talented Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt (lived 1878–1953) and hired him to work for the company in Spain. La Cuadra built their first gas-powered engines from Birkigt designs. At some point in 1902, the ownership changed hands to J. Castro and became Fábrica Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles (Spanish-Swiss Car Factory) but this company went bankrupt in December 1903.
Yet another restructuring took place in 1904, creating La Hispano-Suiza Fábrica de Automóviles also under Castro' s direction. Four new engines were introduced in the next year and a half. 3.8 litre and 7.4 litre four-cylinder and a pair of big six-cylinder engines were produced. This company managed to avoid bankruptcy and in Spain remained in operation, as a car, truck and aviation engine producer, with its main plant located in Barcelona, until 1946. They mass-produced cars, trucks and buses and a number of hand-built racing and luxury cars, some owned by King Alfonso XIII of Spain.
By this time in the early twentieth France was proving to be a much larger market for their luxury cars than Spain. In 1911 a new factory, known as Hispano France, was set up in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret. In 1914, they moved to larger factories at Bois-Colombes and took the name Hispano-Suiza.
At the first motor show after the end of the First World War, the 1919 Paris Auto Salon, Marc Birkigt launched a new luxury model, the H6. For many years the six cylinder Hispano Suiza's refinement and built quality remained unmatched.In the War, Hispano Suiza had supplied over 50,000 V12 fighter plane engines. For his new top of the line model, Birkigt first intended to use a version of the well proven V12. After some tests he concluded that one bank of a V12 would be more than sufficient to propel the new car. The 'six' displaced just over 6.5 litres and featured a single overhead camshaft. Each 35 lb crankshaft was machined from a 600 lb billet, resulting in a very rigid crankshaft. This was typical for Birkigt's 'no cost spared' perfectionism. After World War I Hispano-Suiza returned to automobile engine design and, in 1919, introduced the H6, earning them a reputation even greater than that of Rolls-Royce in England. Indeed, Rolls-Royce featured many Hispano-Suiza patented features, under licence. Most notably, Rolls-Royce used for many years the famed Hispano-Suiza power brakes, reputedly the best in the world, which used the torque generated by a drum brake mounted on the transmission shaft to power those on the wheels.
For the block and head aluminium was used, to keep the weight of the engine down. In the block a six separate steel sleeves formed the cylinders. Ignition was through two coils, with two plugs per cylinder, one on each side of the engine. The overhead camshaft was shaft driven and operated the valves, which were set vertical in the block. This was unconventional setup, which could result in tremendous damage, if a valve dropped in the cylinder. Birkigt was confident in using it, as the valves had never failed on the V12 airplane engines.Finished in black enamel and polished aluminium, the engine was mounted in a conventional ladder frame. It was suspended by a live axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs all-round. The four drum brakes were power assisted by a patented 'servobrake' system. The ingenious system used the car's momentum to slow it down. The brake assistance system took the power from the gearbox, which drove a shaft at 1/64 the speed of the engine. If all else failed, the rear brakes could be activated using a hand lever.Built in Paris and later in the Czech Republic as well, the H6 offered luxury, speed and refinement. Many of Hispano Suiza's European competitors like Rolls Royce, Bentley and Isotta Fraschini offered one or two of these ingredients, but not until the late 1920s did another manufacturer come up to par with the H6. This complete package did not come cheaply and for a while the H6 was the most expensive European car available. In 1922 the slightly more powerful H6B replaced the H6 and in 1924 the 8-litre H6C was added to the line-up.Hispano Suiza delivered the H6 as a rolling chassis for coach builders to body. To match the car's remarkable abilities, only the finest coach builders were commissioned to design and fit bodies on the H6 chassis. A vast majority of the chassis were fitted luxurious coachwork. The featured example is one of the most famous exceptions. Built to the order of one of of Hispano Suiza's biggest clients, Andre Dubonnet, the unique coachwork was built by Nieuport, a French aviation company.Dubonnet, the heir to an aperitif and cognac fortune, was an accomplished pilot and racing driver and needed a new car for the 1924 edition of the Targa Florio. He understood that weight and wind resistance were his biggest adversaries, which is why he turned to Nieuport. They crafted and exceptionally light tulip wood body, which was riveted together by thousands of brass rivets. Despite its huge size, the body weighed a mere 160 pounds. It was fitted on a special H6C chassis, which used a lower than standard radiator and sported a 46 gallon gas tank. There were only two examples fitted with this 'competition' radiator.

For musically talented Barossa Valley local, Sam Brittain, story-telling is exactly that. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Our Shining Skin’ on June 1, 2012, the path to success for the gifted and independent musician has transformed into a never-ending road. First picking up a guitar at the age of three and additionally turning his hand to the piano and drums,
In 2013, Sam is an unstoppable, roots, folk and blues artist, reminiscent of sounds such as Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Ryan Adams. Sam supported close friend and musical influence, Mike Rosenberg (Passenger) at Adelaide-based Fowlers Live, as an integral part of Mike’s ‘All the Little Lights’ album tour, a highlight of Sam’s career to date.
The recording of ‘Our Shining Skin’ saw Sam and his band work endlessly with the talented Barossa-based Jamie Blechynden of Stella Studios and VJ productions. Supported by BJ Barker (drums), Steve Flemming (bass) and Glen Wagland (engineer), tracking the backbone of all 12 songs took a mere two days to complete. ‘Our Shining Skin’ quickly earned impressive reviews and was labelled as a ‘formidable and wide spreading resume’ for Sam (Timber and Steel, August, 2012).
Kicking off an Australian tour, Sam officially released the highly anticipated album at a sold out show on June 9, 2012, held at the Chateau’s acoustically brilliant ‘Long Room’. In June and July 2012, Sam crossed the country, delighting crowds and building his fan base in Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin and Adelaide, including an unforgettable sold out show with Sam’s full band at the prominent Adelaide venue, the Promethean Theatre on September 27, 2012.
Marking the beginning of what’s set to be a milestone year and following a hugely successful first tour, Sam’s lead single ‘Bruises’ hit #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart on New Year’s Eve, 2012/13, where it consolidated its lead for a consecutive four weeks, peaking at #6 in the Overall Top 100.
2013 saw Sam embark on a 16 date tour once again supporting new age folk music legend Mike Rosenberg (Passenger).

DESTINY CHILD GOSPEL MUSIC TALENT HUNT is a nonprofit kingdom project tailored to give talented gospel music ministers a platform to showcase their creativity and launch them into professional gospel music career. Destiny Child is a brand created to compliment the church in spreading the Gospel Of Jesus Christ. Statistics has shown that Gospel music in Nigeria over the years has declined tremendously and fading off the airwaves based on the fact that the church failed in its statutory responsibility in developing Gospel music and as such, many Gospel music ministers in the Church embrace the world of secular music in return for fame and money.
Destiny child came to bridge this divide and to activate dormant destines by grooming Gospel music ministers who have the passion to affect the world positively.
The inaugural season of Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Hunt took place on July 3rd 2012 when Nigeria marked the birth of the first of its kind gospel music Talent Hunt. IT WILL BE RECALLED THAT IN THE 1ST SEASON auditions held across six states in Nigeria (Abuja, Makurdi, Owerri, Port – Harcourt, Benin and Lagos) in search of one child who attains the right to be called Destiny Child. Talented and popular gospel music artists were used as judges and they rated contestants’ performances based on certain criteria and their commitment toward advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Four (4) finalists emerged from each audition zone making a total of Twenty – four (24) contestants, eight (8) were eliminated at the pre-audition stage in Lagos, while sixteen (16) destined contestants made it through to DC City (Destiny Child City) in Lagos State where the competition (Elimination Shows) continued. At DC City, they were groomed spiritually, psychologically,morally and exposed to professional training, week after week, the number DIMINISHED until the final six emerged, tagged ‘THE SUPREME SIX (6)’.
The emergence of six dynamic gospel music ministers known as the Supreme Six, made up of Israel Funsho who emerged the winner of Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Hunt Season One, Femi Flame who happens to be the 1st runner up, Rasine Brown the 2nd runner – up, Shalom Olurunfemi, David Agbroko and Ojoh Frances who were the other three finalists.
The Supreme Six embarked on a nationwide gospel praise party tagged “PRODUCT OF HOPE” where they performed hit songs from their albums. The Gospel praise party kicked off from Lagos, then to Akure, Ilorin, Calabar, Port–Harcourt, Makurdi, and Abuja. Product of Hope activated the enthusiasm of Christians in gospel music and it was indeed a testimony as we kept receiving great deeds of God.
The second edition of this project kicked off in August 2013, with auditions in nine states in Nigeria (Abuja, Makurdi, Owerri, Port-Harcourt, Uyo, Asaba, Benin, Ekiti and Lagos). Audition judges were picked from each state (Audition zone) for the purpose of diversity in music genre, style, culture and language; all contestants were rated judiciously irrespective of style and language. Two contestants were picked from each audition zone EXCLUDING EKITI AND LAGOS WHERE 1 AND 3 CONTESTANTS WHERE SELECTED RESPECTIVELY making a total of 18. The 18 finalists made it through to DC City and made history with every passing episode. They were groomed spiritually, psychologically and exposed to professional music. At DC City, they were specifically schooled to lift the name of the God and our world with power of their voice and soul.
Season two (2) came to an end with outstanding performances from the finalists called “THE PROLIFIX”. For the very first time history was made as the crowned title was destined for a girl (Joy Ebiem aka J’dess) from the slums of Lagos, she emerged as the winner of Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Hunt Season 2. She won a brand new car, cash prize of a million Naira, Record deal worth millions of Naira (courtesy of Autograph Records). The 1st runner – up Hope Levi and the 2nd Runner – up Ese Okoro aka EseQlic also won record deals worth millions of Naira each (courtesy of Autograph Records). The trios have each released their debut single, spreading across the airwaves, touching the lives of men and women, with an inflow of testimonies every day.
This milestone wouldn’t have been completed without the immense support of our online media partners, who have worked tirelessly, day and night in advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through their various platforms.

Destiny child gospel music talent hunt season three will follow a different dimension compared to season one and two due the current state of our country Nigeria. In this regard, auditions for this season will be held ONLINE and one regional audition in Lagos state.
Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Hunt season three online registration and auditions will kick off on the 10th of November to end 8th of December, while online registration for Lagos regional audition will end on the 14th of December 2014.
All intending contestants across the States in Nigeria will register online and then upload a one minute video to www.destinychild.com.ng. A panel of qualified and magnificent judges will review all the songs online and give their verdict before selections will be made for the final phase which will take place on the 15th of December 2014, at Aquatic hotels (Water parks) Ikeja Lagos, by 8 am prompt.
CONTESTANTS WHO ARE ABLE TO UPLOAD THEIR VIDEOS ONLINE ARE ENCOURAGED TO make their way to Lagos at the said date, time and venue for the regional audition.
Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Hunt season three show will have only one regional audition, one episode and one winner.
Six finalists will emerge from the regional audition in Lagos and then converge at DC City, Lagos State where they will minister on Destiny Child Stage before the panel of judges and audience. The judges will give their verdict and announce the winner of Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Season Three.
The well-established gospel show welcomes back multiple Award winning music legend Wole Oni, producer of Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Hunt U-cheena and the new addition to the panel Omotola Omoniyi, C.E.O of Praise World Radio as the esteemed judges for this season, with Quest, Ibrahim Suleiman as the Host of the show.
Despite the challenges, lack of sponsorship, and the high hurdles we are determined to bring back the lost glory of gospel music in Nigeria.
The online media platform has proven to be a major pillar/player in the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ; it has a strong influence on our interested demography (i.e. the youths).
We want to use this medium to employ the help of our online media partners to spread the message of Destiny Child Gospel Music Talent Hunt to our interested demographic population, enlightening them on the vision, the mission of the quest, the process involved and the benefits.
