These are my girls. The smaller one on the left is my granddaughter, Sarah. The fabulous shutterbug on the right is my daughter, Shannon.
Theirs is a work-in-progress…’tagging’ the wall of Shannon’s scrapbooking room. The missing word to be filled in is “Buttercup”. Shannon very frequently greets friends with “What’s up, Buttercup?”
I chose this “work-in-progress” shot to represent my family’s current state.
Some flickr friends already know that this dynamic duo is facing some struggles. Sarah had surgery Thursday to have two extra bones removed. It’s a syndrome that usually affects one foot. Sarah’s doctor told her she was special to have two feet involved. She will spend the remainder of summer and fall confined to a wheel chair or walker. Not easy for an athletic cheerleader. But as she is bouncy-by-default, I expect she will display her determination vibrantly as the paint on this wall.
This, I believe, will be a source of inspiration for her Mom, who is becoming much less bouncy. After Sarah’s surgery was already scheduled, Shannon was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes. Weeks of testing have determined the severity of the disease and course of treatment. The prognosis is good and full of hope. Chemo was postponed due to Sarah’s surgery; preparing for it was not. Whatever joys of summer left to be had were crammed into the remaining hours.
It’s why I have been MIA here on flickr. It’s why I expect to continue more extended absences. I will be Shannon’s chemo buddy. She’s one of my girls.
Cancer is just another wall we ran into. Hard. Now that we’ve dusted ourselves off a bit, I see that wall as another one to tag. With the word to be filled in: HOPE.
I want to thank the friends who have known about this for their support, words of encouragement and their prayers. I’ll be back when I can; until then I’m busy playing Family Tag. ♥With my girls♥

This is my Tag Heuer Link Chronograph, it became tonight's subject. I am on my ever lasting quest to figure out how lighting and photography works that it led me to this assignment tonight. I used my Photek Light Tent with the black background as I thought it would look best against the Stainless Steel. I mounted a Speedlite 580EX on my 30D and attached a Lumiquest FX Colored Gel system to it with a red gel. I placed a Speedlite 430EX to the left and right of the light tent and triggered them wirelessly with the 580EX.

2018 TAG Match Delaware National Guard
Story by Spc. Michael Tanner
Soldiers and Airmen of the Delaware National Guard competed in this year’s annual TAG match at the River Road Training Site in New Castle on August 4th and 5th.
They compete against each other, both individually and with teams, to earn the right to wear the Governor’s Twenty Tab on their uniform. Only the top 20 earn the right to wear the tab.
Each competitor, using both the M16A2 rifle and the M9 pistol, must go through several shooting scenarios with different targets.
This year’s competition had a new factor added in, the weather. Day one started with rain and ended with heavy humidity. Day two provided lots of heat and humidity. The competitors took it all in stride and never wavered.
Those that earn the tab are given the opportunity to compete in the regional competition held at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA. If the competitors attain a high enough score at regionals, they will then be able to compete at the national competition held in Little Rock, Arkansas.
To end the two-day shooting event, an awards ceremony is held to honor the winners.

(Feb. 18, 2009: It's not at all surprising to me that the most viewed picture on my photostream isn't one that I took, but instead one by some unknown photographer of a hundred years ago. For as long as I can remember, I've known that this was a compelling image.)
Me, me, me!
I've been tagged! This photo restoration is as good an occasion as any for my listing 16 things about me. I'm given to understand that I could probably get away with "9 for '09" but my friend yourwillingskin (AKA Northstar) wanted 16, so here goes:
1. I am the only son of an only son of an only son. In connection with this, the man in the centre of the picture is Joseph Reid, a schooner captain and my great grandfather. The little boy tucked into his arm is Eldred Reid, my grandfather.
2. I lived in the house in the picture for two years in the early 70s, when I was around four or five years old. I also spent many months and weeks during the summers of my childhood with my grandparents in Heart's Delight. Much time was spent catching frogs and crabs, as well as drawing comic books in scrap books. In my memories and imagination, the town of Heart's Delight will always have an association with sunshine and an easy state of being.
3. Although I've spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, I have no firsthand idea of how non-creative people can put up with their own company.
4. I don't count myself as having produced anything of any real merit for more than six years, since I moved out of a place I was renting as a painting studio on my 34th birthday. Subsequently, I sometimes have trouble putting up with my own company.
5. I sing. Nothing all the way through, of course. Just bits and pieces of songs. I got in quite a bit of practice while I was alone in my painting studio. Some people are gracious enough to tell me that I'm half-decent.
6. Or maybe it's impressions of singers that I do. Anything from the plaintive rant of Roger Waters of Pink Floyd to the plaintive swoon of Fran Healy of Travis. Sometimes I even do Elvis Presley.
7. For 15 years of my life I wanted to be a comic book artist. I was a teenager at just the right time to see Frank Miller and Alan Moore start to do their stuff. Although I got bored of comics when I was 17, the ambition continued until I was 22, when I decided I wanted to paint instead.
8. Watchmen, which was first published during my first year of university, was the last comic that I bought regularly. Alan Moore really had the golden touch.
9. My childhood was ruled by a boundlessly expansive imagination. The things that caught my attention -- comic books, chapter books, drawing, and later pop music -- seemed more wonderful than I will ever be able to express. Pretty girls should be listed there too. Pretty girls really had me in a bad way.
10. Off the top of my head, my favorite movies this past year were Superbad and... wait a bit, I'll get back to you.
11. Off the top of my head, my favourite music this past year was Bon Iver. (I enjoy mimicing Justin Vernon's falsetto, too.)
12. Way out ahead of the pack, my favourite author is Kurt Vonnegut. He offers me complicency, I guess, just as any friend would. I've also been deeply moved by the writings John Steinbeck. Saroyan has brought me to tears, but that was years ago. The best I read this past year was Cormac McCarthy.
13. Fortunately for me, I can't play first-person shooters. They all give me a terrible headache. Unfortunately for me, if I actually can see an avatar on the screen, then I can play computer games without getting a headache for quite a while. But I don't bother with them very much.
14. I work as a graphic designer at a small town printer's. I've known since the mid-90s that I found graphic design to be truly soul-sucking work. Maybe if my life hadn't had certain difficulties, I would have been able to work my way into an interesting graphic designer postion, like, say, art director for an interesting magazine.
15. When I wasn't painting or graphic designing during the past decade, I was driving ambulances, pumping gas, or working as a clerk. Like I say, if my life hadn't had certain difficulties...

3. I don't really listen to music but sometime do tune up to Rock and Slow Rock.
4. I like movies but dont like going to cinema nowadays. Normally buying 5-8 new DVD movies every 2 weeks.

6. I don't like reading. Normally will fall asleep when I start reading....
7. Wanted to be a doctor but ended up as an Engineer.

9. I am an Internet addict... I can sit in front of computer for hours and hours...

11. I like traveling but I don't fancy going to the "mat salleh" place.

I am supposed to list sixteen things about myself. Here goes.
1. I’ll be 45 in February.
2. I married my high school sweetheart 25 years ago.
3. We have three daughters who are all in college now.
4. I’m Christian.
5. I love all of nature but especially plants, dogs, and birds.
6. I work from my home computer as a medical transcriptionist in the sunroom that I’m pictured in here. Since I spend so much time at the computer we built this room so I can be surrounded by my plants and a few birds.
7. Montana truly is the last best place to me. The winters are harsh but you can’t beat the summers. I think our winters keep away big bugs and other undesirables. Our air is fresh and our water is pure. I’ve hiked to the glacier that produces the creek that runs near our house and that feeds our underground water supply.
8. We live in a very rural area but we’re an hour away from decent shopping.
9. I love to cook and wish I had more time to concentrate on it. That work thing gets in the way of my fun!
10. I like my house to be peaceful and quiet.
11. I show two of our four dogs.
12. I like all kinds of music...from classical to heavy metal...okay maybe not rap.
13. My biggest accomplishment is raising our three daughters to be smart, funny, productive members of society.
14. Camping is one of my favorite things. I’ve even camped in the snow in a tent...once.
