The weather is getting warm now.

The windmill: a true icon on the prairies of Canada. I like how these windmills really give you a sense of days gone by.

Update: Sadly this old windmill is now gone...

The wonderful, rare, wild Sea Holly [Eryngium Maritimum ] grows in isolated places along the coast here on stabilised sand dunes.

Its differing green coloured and white veined and edged leaves which are almost luminous, make it very attractive I think. The seed heads which are just forming will eventually turn a light purple/blue adding to its lovely appearence. These plants can survive in extremely inhospitable places and can exist with very little moisture and are salt and wind tolerant. They were originally plants of the high arid places of the World such as the Peruvian mountains and the Andes. They somehow, with many other similar plants, migrated here some 15000 years ago as their imprints have been found in Fossils from these areas. Luckily no one was building border walls then!!

Ive reported the location of this beautiful plant to the Biodiversity Dept of Trinity College, Dublin who will log its position for future study.

This plant is said to have aphrodisiac properties but others say its not true. Mind you swalowing the prickily leaves is...er... would be quite severe and Im saying no more as my throat is killing me at the moment!!! And you lot, behave yerselves!!! Lol!

Hope you like the photo.

The ‘Royal Arrival’ is a stray tomcat visiting this Wild Garden in West Wales on a very regular basis – sometimes he even sleeps in one of the wood sheds, here.

Birds, squirrels, rabbits and the cat respect each other well - as well as the wild-life of this cute tomcat is respected by his tin-opener. He is being cared for as best as possible and in compliance with his permission.

After a last farewell, he left on his bicycle in the late setting sun of afternoon on that cold and blustery winter day. The snow that had melted and then froze to ice showed reflections on the road, but remained intact in the heaped mounds on the sides. Some of the stark trees in the park still showed the withered remains of Fall leaves. It was just another day of winter in Montreal! I then wondered, would I ever see my dear friend again?

I did in 2017 an I hope that I will again sometime this year of 2018 or 2019.! Dear friends must never be forgotten!

The Rat Savior is a 1976 Croatian fantastic horror film directed by Krsto Papić. It was released in 1976, and was selected as the Yugoslav entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 49th Academy Awards. In 1999, a poll of Croatian film critics found it to be one of the best Croatian films ever made.

The plot: A man uncovers a race of intelligent rats who can appear as human. He is captured and taken to the rat people’s leader (the "savior" of the movie's title). He escapes, but then wonders who among his fellow humans is a rat person in disguise.

One of the movie locations was also the building in the photo, located in the historic part of Zagreb, Croatia. I watched the movie as a small child and, as a result, spent the rest of my childhood and early teens scared to death of that building. Of course, it sounds silly now. :-)

The small heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae, classified within the subfamily Satyrinae (commonly known as "the browns"). It is the smallest butterfly in this subfamily. The small heath is diurnal and flies with a noticeable fluttering flight pattern near the ground. It rests with closed wings when not in flight. It is widespread in colonies throughout the grasslands of Eurasia and north-western Africa, preferring drier habitats than other Coenonympha, such as salt marshes, alpine meadows, wetlands, and grasslands near water (i.e. streams). However, habitat loss caused by human activities has led to a decline in populations in some locations.

The larval host plants are grasses, found in various habitats, while adult butterflies feed on nectar from flowers. The males of this species are territorial, which plays a large role in obtaining a female mate. To establish dominance, they partake in lekking, a mating display in which males aggregate in a competitive display to attract passing females

The Moat in Donaghadee was built to house the explosives for the blasting involved in the construction of the harbour. It is one of the most prominent features of the town. The Motte, or the Moat as it is known, dates back to 1818. Today it is part of a park, giving views across the town and seawards towards the Copeland Islands. The original mound was of Norman origin, when a motte and bailey stood on the site. It was initially used as a defensive structure, and provided an excellent look-out post.

The Ridgeway

Following a route used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers the 87 mile long Ridgeway passes through ancient landscapes through downland, secluded valleys and woodland.

This shot was taken at Winterbourne Bassett and the Hackpen White Horse,to the right out of shot.

Winterbourne Bassett is a small village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, about 6 miles southwest of Swindon and 7 miles northwest of Marlborough.

The Diana Temple in the Munich Hofgarten, the garden of the Munich Residenz (the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria) was created in 1613–1617 in Italian style together with the Hofgarten. The park was destroyed during World War II and partly redesigned as an English-style garden. Like the whole Hofgarten, the Diana Temple is usually open to the public. Exceptions are rare, such as when it was used as a backdrop for filming (for example, The Three Musketeers (2011).Concerts are held in the pavilion In the summer evenings.

The garden is mentioned in T. S. Elliot's poem The Waste Land.

The evening before the theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 25th of February - "tree silhoettes" - was announced, I was photographing just that on Griffith Island, a native animal sanctuary in Port Fairy, capturing them in the dying rays of what had been a beautiful summer’s day.

This costal area of south-eastern Australia is famous for many reasons, including its winds, which out on this exposed island, twist and turn to their whims, the Norfolk Pines that grow there. This one, as you can see, is lopsided, with many branches to the right. This is because the left side is more exposed to the winds coming in off the ocean. Looking at this silhouette, I am put in mind of one of my favourite illustrators of the Golden Age of Children’s Illustration: Arthur Rackham (1867 – 1939). He portrayed witches sitting in the branches of windswept trees. Perhaps if you look closely enough, you might see a witch sitting in the twisted branches of this witches’ tree. I hope that you like my choice of image for the theme, and that it makes you smile!

Port Fairy is a historical coastal town in south-western Victoria. It lies on the Princes Highway in the Shire of Moyne, twenty-eight kilometres west of Warrnambool and two hundred and ninety kilometres west of Melbourne, at the point where the Moyne River enters the Southern Ocean. Settled by predominantly Irish immigrants, Port Fairy was originally called Belfast, and contains many old and significantly historic buildings. A popular tourist destination it has many attractions including an annual folk music festival and jazz music festival.

The citadel or kasbah of the Udayas was where the present Moroccan capital city of Rabat began and is today like a city within a city. It was built at at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river with views of the Atlantic Ocean and is still home to many locals.

The scratch post on the terrace is under the roof of the house and usually stays dry. It is therefore considered as a kind of safe haven by the Dragon when elsewhere in the garden he would risk being hit by snowflakes. :)

The Queenscliff High Light, also variously known as the Black Lighthouse, Fort Queenscliff Lighthouse or Shortland Bluff Light, stands in the grounds of Fort Queenscliff in Queenscliff, Victoria, Australia. It is one of three black lighthouses in the world, and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. Together with the nearby white Queenscliff Low Light, it was built in 1862 to replace the former sandstone lighthouse of 1843.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii) is a historic mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. The mosque is popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. It was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I.

Nature has endowed the relief of this vast rock formation with incredible colors. In Spanish, the Valle del Arcoiris means "Valley of the Rainbow", a name worthy of this grandiose landscape of red, white, yellow and brown cliffs standing out against the blue sky. This emblematic site of San Pedro de Atacama attracts visitors from all over the world to admire its splendid colors.

The 500 foot tall sandstone formation named the The Organ stands near the lower entrance to the Park Avenue in Arches National Park. Small pools form in the floor of the canyon of Park Avenue after rain.

Affectionately called, “The Bean” and what has become synonymous with the Chicago experience is Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate. Cloud Gate was created using computer technology to cut 168 massive stainless-steel plates into precise shapes which were then pieced together like a puzzle and welded shut.

The Aare Gorge is a section of the river Aare that carves through a limestone ridge near the town of Meiringen, in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. The gorge is an indirect product of glaciation; 10,000 years ago, just as the Ice Age was coming to an end, torrential runoff water from melting glaciers eroded a deep, narrow chasm through the limestone barrier resulting in a gorge which is 1’400 metres long and up to 200 metres deep. The gorge varies in width from some 30 metres at its widest to just 1 metre at its narrowest.

The Linge is a river in the Betuwe that is 99.8 km long, which makes it one of the longest rivers that flow entirely within the Netherlands.

It starts near the village Doornenburg near the German border. A legend tells us that if there will be no more pigs grazing at the castle of Doornenburg, the river will dry out. The Linge flows to Zoelen, a small village north of Tiel and from there on meanders through the Betuwe, to end in the Boven Merwede near Gorinchem. Until Geldermalsen the river is little more than a small, canalised stream. From Geldermalsen on however, it begins to look like a real river complete with dikes and small floodplains. The Linge provides idyllic spots at old towns like Asperen and Leerdam as both have the city walls still in shape at the side of the river. The river was once a branch of the river Waal, being cut off at Tiel in 1307 or thereabouts (some traces of this can still be seen). The river is navigable for small vessels and is a popular destination for boaters. The banks of the river are important breeding grounds for waterfowl.

This river used to be an important trade route in old days. This role has nowadays been taken by the Rhine and Waal rivers.

The Derwent Reservoir Dam which is in Derbyshire was used as a practice dam by the 617 squadron of the Royal Air Force, later to be know as the Dam Busters. One or two of the famous bouncing bombs probably bounced over the side of this huge wall. Today, thankfully, it is only water.

The Pinnacles Desert is located just out of Cervantes, Western Australia in the Nambung National Park. An absolutely amazing landscape. The afternoon that we visited the wind was howling making it very unpleasant to to out of the car to take photographs, but, it all adds to the experience. In case you were wondering, the sand really is that colour.

This small waterfall is located in a forest area in the Bavarian alps…!Very nice hike with my friend Billy ,discovering a couple more cascades above of this one.

I was taking the memory card out of my camera the other night to upload the pictures to my laptop. I just looked over at Asha on the ground who had pulled a cushion of the sofa to lie on and I was greeted with this stare. All dog parents know this stare, the stare that watches you intently for any indication that you will stop what you are doing on that square box and pay them some attention. Nothing makes you feel as guilty when you find your dog patiently staring at you for your attention. As I had my camera in my hand I thought I'd take a few wee snaps of her doing this. I don't normally take pictures in the house and especially not early evening but I quite liked this picture so I thought I'd upload it to let people see what I have to contend with...The guilt of the pleading eyes penetrating my soul...
