Another thing that I notice when traveling is how the electrical and phone systems seem different from what I see in the US. Compare the insulators and wiring as seen here.
Some parts are very familiar, others seem woefully out of date.

Observing a stormy day in the Bay Area. A strong storm system had battered the region with widespread plentiful rain and wind this day. Luckily, it wasn't that busy at work so I had a couple chances to head out and observe the stormy weather. Travel safe out there guys, especially if you guys are heading up to the Sierras! Pics taken from around San Jose/Milpitas, CA. (Thursday, January 16, 2020)
*Weather update/scenario:
Rain, thunderstorms and snow, oh my! ABC7 News Meteorologist Mike Nicco was tracking a new storm set to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail and even snow to parts of the Bay Area especially this day of Thursday, January 16, 2020… "The most potent storm in more than a month was to be upon us Thursday," said Nicco.... "By 7 a.m., the storm was to push into the heart of the bay before it soaks the East Bay and the South Bay around 9 a.m. By noon, we were to transition to a chance of heavy showers locally and some possible thunderstorms.” Certainly, the stormy weather was causing slick roads and flooding in various areas across the region, according to weather officials. The storm was expected to bring anywhere from 1-3 inches of rainfall to the coastal mountain ranges and the North Bay. Most urban areas could pick up 0.5 to 1 inch of rainfall. Less rain was expected in rain-shadowed valleys. There was a slight chance of thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening, according to the weather service... Drive safely out there, fellas!

One system of tunnels that is open to the public on a regular basis, normally the first weekend in September each year, are the tunnels beneath the village of Bouzincourt. These tunnels cut into the chalk had been used to hide both villages and their cattle and then during WW1 they became a billet for troops. Spending long periods of time resting in the tunnels, British and Commonwealth soldiers covered the walls with memorials to their lost comrades and their own names and those of their units. Many of these fragile inscriptions are written in field pencil, while others are cut into the chalk.
