Sub-irrigation is an alternative to overhead sprinkling where seedlings are watered by flooding a wide tray containing pots. Sub-irrigation can save water in areas where water is scarce and water can by recycled. Nutrients leached from the containers can be returned when the water is recycled. Watering is more even than with overhead sprayers. Leaf wetness is also reduced. Seedlings of ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha), Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge, Hawaii.

A context free grammar with associated transforms in the plane and RGB space made these...
rules like
a -> bc
b -> bd
but never like:
d -> dd
each symbol is associated with a rotation, shift and scale in the plane, and a step in a direction in he RGB color space.
There are to real terminal symbols, termination occurs when the sub-tree would be less than a pixel in size, and the pixel at the resulting position is coloured.
Much like an L-System, I would say.
Actually because the tree overwrites itself in the image, does that make it context-sensitive, in that the result depends on other symbols? Certainly you need the image buffer as well as the stack to represent the process.
Maine's Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes system was a conglomeration of several smaller railroads, notably the Sandy River Railroad, the Phillips & Rangeley Railroad, and the Franklin & Megantic. In the early days, it was apparently common for crews on these two-foot lines to bring their rifles with them on the train during hunting season. Traveling through the deep woods of Maine, the little trains often spooked large game, such as deer and bear, providing an excellent opportunity for the crews to bring home something more than just a paycheck. In this scene, the crew on a mixed train, from Carrabasset to Strong, has flushed a large buck and the fireman quickly brandishes his 1898 Winchester Rifle for a shot at what might be dinner for the next week and a half.
This scene was staged during a February, 2024 photo shoot on Maine's Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum, which featured WW&F Locomotive #9 decorated in the livery of her very first owner, the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad, where she carried the number 6. Trailing on the rear of the consist this day is Franklin & Megantic Coach #2. Both the engine and the coach would have run on the Sandy River back in the day. The train is shown here at the rural crossing for Rosewood Stables, not far from Milepost 7.

Loretta Rogers and I were two "local authors" present at the event, which included addresses given by state and local officials and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Our keynote speaker was Florida Secretary of State Kurt S. Browning. CCLIB director Flossie Benton Rogers organized the event, which also owes much to the library staff and to Friends of the Library of Homosassa Florida, Inc.
Saskatoon Transit is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. They threw a BBQ and showcased some buses from over the years. I took this picture from the inside of a 2008 New Flyer DE40LFR. This electronic farebox system uses only coins or RFID cards.

Templebar, Dublin.
We woke to low cloud and rain! What a shock to the system. Not a mountain peak or distant island to be seen.
A tasty breakfast of scrambled eggs (so yellow!!) perked us up and donning waterproofs we bid farewell to Zavižan and headed off downhill to the start of the Premuziceva Trail (Premužićeva staza). Built in 1933, the trail takes you through the heart of the Northern Velebit National Park, remote and protected, with beautiful wild flowers every step of the way, and weird and wonderful water carved limestone rocks interspersed with spruce and beech forests. The Croatian National Tourist Board's Premuziceva Trail pages provide an excellent account of the route as well as the history of the trail.
We lunched in Rossi's hut, which looked like it was undergoing a spot of renovation, but at least it provided shelter from the rain. The afternoon leg of the trail included some steep descents and stretches through forests and long grass alpine meadows, eventually bringing us to the Alan mountain hut.
After changing out of wet boots (this was the day I decided my new Merrell Outbounds were Definitely Going Back), we met our new minibus and driver who ferried us down the switchback road leaving the Velebit mountains behind us and continuing south along the Jadranska magistrala coast road to Karlobag.
After checking in at the Hotel Zagreb, and luxuriating in the power showers of our newly refurbished block, Lina, Hazel, Cat and I headed off to explore Karlobag and - most importantly - to find coffee and cake, which we did with great success. We returned to the old town/village for dinner, in a lovely restaurant tucked away on a first floor terrace overlooking a courtyard. Everyone ate well, and we could hardly refuse the buy-one-get-one-free offer on the litre carafes of local white wine...

In the 1980s, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources developed a statewide bicycle touring networking known as the "Hoosier Bikeway System". Each route had a set of maps and cue sheets, and the routes also had pavement markings. This system continues to be featured in DeLorme's "Indiana Atlas and Gazetteer". However, this publication doesn't provide enough detail to follow the routes, and the road markings are no longer visible.
In 2002, the program was eliminated, as being "underused and outdated" and costing "approximately $25,000/year to maintain".
Most recently, this recent planning document states that the DNR plans to invest in bicycle touring routes: "The Indiana Department of Transportation is taking a lead role in promoting alternative transportation by currently working on a state bicycle plan that will cover bicycle routes throughout Indiana."
My contact at the DNR clarified just a few days ago:
"There are many people that would like to see a statewide bicycle route system, but it would have to be something different from the Hoosier Bikeways. The Hoosier Bikeways was designed for self contained overnight travel and there just are not very many bicyclists that really bicycle like that. Plus, DNR did not have the staff or financial resources to keep up with a statewide system that involved almost a thousand miles of roads that were constantly under repair, being altered, or changing traffic patterns. Besides, it seems that most people want to go out on a day ride at most and usually end up back where they started. That is why we are encouraging local routes be developed and maintained. If all counties were to develop local routes, then connections could eventually be made between these routes and we could build toward a statewide system."
In the meantime, he was kind enough to supply me with some remaining cue books from the old network. The shape is designed to fit in a handle-bar bag for direct use on a bike, and the elevation charts and routes are still interesting, even if they are dated.
