We have redundant systems to ensure that drivers don't unintentionally enter the express lanes the wrong way at Northgate, the farthest north entrance, and James Street, the farthest south entrance, because that's where the highest number of vehicles enter.
We have multiple gates, called slash gates (like this), signs that read "closed", dragnets (see previous) and overhead and side-mounted signs that read "closed" or "Do Not Enter."
It's rare that someone unintentionally enters the express lanes from either the north or south entrance.
Does it ever happen? Yes. Bill Churney says there are occasions when he's doing the final sweep of the express lanes to make sure they are clear of debris and someone enters the express lanes before he's flipped the open switch. He says it's scary to see a car coming at him from the opposite direction.
He says some people are on autamtic pilot and don't even look up to see the sign that says closed.

VERTISOLS: Seasonally cracking soil, rich in swelling clays (from the Latin, vertere, to turn). Vertisols are rich in swelling clay minerals and occur primarily in level landscapes under climates with pronounced dry and wet seasons. Vertisols shrink and swell upon drying and wetting. Deep wide cracks form when the soil dries out and swelling in the wet season and creates polished and grooved ped surfaces (slickensides) or wedge-shaped or parallel-sided aggregates in the subsurface vertic horizon. The landscapes of a Vertisol may have a complex micro-topography of micro-knolls and mircro-basins called “gilgai”. Vertisols are also known as black cotton soil (USA), regur (India), vlei soil (South Africa) and margalites (Indonesia). They cover 0.5 percent of Europe.
The current Hungarian Soil Classification System (HSCS) was developed in the 1960s, based on the genetic principles of Dokuchaev. The central unit is the soil type grouping soils that were believed to have developed under similar soil forming factors and processes. The major soil types are the highest category which groups soils based on climatic, geographical and genetic bases. Subtypes and varieties are distinguished according to the assumed dominance of soil forming processes and observable/measurable morphogenetic properties.

Starting in October 2012, the second ARM Mobile Facility (AMF2) was deployed on the Horizon Lines cargo ship Spirit for the year-long Marine ARM GPCI1 Investigation of Clouds (MAGIC) campaign, traveling between Los Angeles, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii. The purpose of the deployment was to understand and parameterize clouds, precipitation, aerosols and radiation, and the interactions among them.

This is the region between the original Alternating Graident Synchrotron (AGS) linac and the AGS itself as it appeared in 1960. 50 MeV proton beams leaves the linac at the upper left corner and travels down the 4 inch pipe to the lower right, passing through a series of focusing lenses and steering magnets. Just above the man in the foreground is a set of steering magnets for horizontal and vertical deflections. Several items of test gear necessary for proper adjustment are also located in this region. In the foreground is a "viewing box" with lucite covers over the drive mechanisms. The man in the background, wearing a head set for communication to the control room, is standing by an identical box. The pipe extending diagonally across the aisle is the exit pipe from an analyzer magnet which bends protons through about 25 degrees in order to allow a determination of the energy spread of the protons.
