A figure used in a lecture from JR James at the Department of Town and Regional Planning at The University of Sheffield between 1967 and 1978.
Ellery Thompson operated the Kaladar & Northern Telephone System located in Northbrook. When telephones went to dial-up in the mid-1960s this switchboard was no longer needed for the telephone service to operate. Ellery (man in centre with striped tie) donated this switchboard to the Sunshine School - a school for developmentally challenged children located between Napanee and Odessa. A member of the school board (man with glasses) was present for this photo. The switchboard was to be used as a learning tool for the children. After the switchboard was of no longer use it was to be returned to Ellery and donated to the Pioneer Museum where it now resides.
Ellery purchased a smaller telephone system from James Vogen in Northbrook who was using the former general store in Northbrook (later Glady's Cup and Kettle) to house the equipment. Ellery rapidly expanded the system and offered telephone service to Flinton, Kaladar, Northbrook, Cloyne, Fernleigh, Harlowe and Ferguson's Corners (bottom of Eagle Hill). The Denbigh and Plevna telephone exchanges were purchased by Ellery later to further expand the service. During this expansion he employed many people including George Hawley as a technician.
Party lines were the norm. The more people on a single line, the more hum was generated in the call. Every 20 subscribers would have a 'jackknife switch' which would enable a caller to reach further afield. For instance, someone calling from Northbrook to Matawatchewan would need to first reach Mrs. Gregg in Vennachar who relayed the call to Denbigh. The Denbigh switchboard person would relay the call to Griffith and then finally to Mrs. McLaren in Matawatchewan. Oftentimes switchboard operators had the switches by their bed so they could transfer calls after hours. When the Northbrook switchboard was located in the former Liquor Store a bed was located close-by for the operator.

I removed a double-page spread of the Mississippi River system from a vintage copy of the Encyclopedia world Atlas and had it framed back in mid-2005. This is one of my favorite maps as it shows many of the places we've lived. It's hard to get a good photograph of it due to the glass.

Spent all week noodling about this. The small slicks for minifigure race cars perfectly grip a 1 stud brick if the centers of the axles are 7 plates apart. The left bogie is driven, the middle bogie isn't and the right one just demonstrates how it would attach to a car (I'm using a few placeholder pieces for things I don't have handy). The track section on the bottom are for articulated sections of switching track.
The Agricultural Innovation Systems in Africa workshop brought together researchers and development practitioners who held discussions through oral plenary sessions, group work, open space sessions and a poster and market place session on Agricultural Innovation systems. It was co-organized by Joint Learning in Innovation Systems in African Agriculture (JOLISAA) and CCAFS on 29th - 31st May 2013.

My daughter, Racheal discovered the Lomi Compost System and bought one for me. She's used hers and is very impressed how fast it works on all sorts of food scraps. I will use mine once it gets colder outside since we throw our veggie scraps into the big compost pile behind the Hoop House. This thing can produce compost in 18 hours. Amazing.
The Novoflex system was designed in Germany in the late 1950's as a rapid focusing system that employs a pistol grip. Before autofocus, this was the fastest focusing system available. I prefer it to autofocus when shooting wildlife because I can chose what I want to be in focus. This system includes 240mm, 400mm and 640mm interchangable lens heads. Novoflex designed the system with adapters for virtually every camera body that accepted interchangable lenses. I like them because I have a number of different camera bodies and I can adapt the lenses to any body I have.

Midland Co.Rail Trail (linear park) solar sculptures in Coleman MI is a exhibit along the rail trail consisting of the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The Solar System is represented by a series of sculptures placed along the Pere Marquette Rail Trail in western Midland County. The Sun sculpture is 7.5 foot diameter bright yellow sphere atop a 4 foot stem. This size is a scale down ratio of 600 million to one which then dictates the sizes of the planets. Jupiter is a 10 inch sphere. Saturn is a 8 inch sphere but also has rings that make the sculpture 18 inches wide. Uranus also has rings on its 3.5 inch sphere. Neptune is 3 inches is diameter. Venus and Earth are about 7/8 inch in diameter. Mercury, Mars, Pluto, and Earth's Moon were scaled to less than 1/2 inch. All the planets were fabricated of stainless steel.
Each planet sculpture is mounted in a 3 foot high by 4 inch square stainless steel pedestal. These pedestals are bolted to concrete slabs adjacent to the rail trail. Labels identify each planet and the moon. The placement of the planets was also dictated by the 600 million to one scale down ratio. The chosen site is a perfectly straight and flat segment of the trail starting with the Sun sculpture in downtown Coleman. The Pluto sculpture is at the trailhead in the in the village of North Bradley 5.6 miles eastward. This is along the US-10 expressway between the the cities of Midland and Clare in central Michigan.
Information signs are located at each, end of the solar system. Included are locations information, some astronomical information, Copernicus's model of the solar system, a photo of the 1980 lineup of the sun and visible planets, and a map of the trail. co.midland.mi.us/ParksandRecreation/SolarSystemSculptures...
I purchased the new Sawyer squeeze filter system to replace my old filter and it will be used in the same way.
Top to bottom: Platypus 2 liter water reservoir with sipping hose, Crystal Geyser water bottle, Sawyer Squeeze filter, Sawyer filter adapter, Sawyer Squeeze bag.
I will carry the filled Platypus to tide me over between water sources . Using the Crystal Geyser bottle and filter I will drink from streams and lakes along the way.
In camp I will use the Squeeze bag as my "dirty" bag, filling it from the water source and, with filter attached, refill my "clean" platypus reservoir.
Total weight: 4.7 oz
New note post trip: The filter is great but the squeeze bag design leaves much to be desired. Will leave at home in the future (probably throw out). The crystal Geyser bottle worked very well and is all I really needed as a squeeze bottle.
UPDATE 7/2015: Have replaced this filter with the Sawyer Mini Filter system and love it.

This is a new sculpture of Bård Breivik (March 2010), in the City Park of Bergen.
The four walls of the cube represent four Physics phenomema: Orion's Belt, High C, Doppler Chamber Tone A, and Fractals.
It will be used as a wall relief on the outer walls of the new building for the Institute of Informatics at the University of Oslo.
