The occupation of the Shenstone arms manufacturer near Birmingham continues by Palestine solidarity campaigners.
The company, known as UEL, is owned by the Israel drone specialists Silver Arrow, a subsidiary of the Israeli defence contractor Elbit Systems.
The Israeli-owned British company has been drawn into the political controversy over arms sales to Israel in recent years.
The firm is one of the world's leading manufacturers of engines for drones - unmanned aerial vehicles that are used by the military across the world.
The occupation was joined by solidarity protesters from the West Midlands and as far away as Milton Keynes thoughout the day. They vowed to return tomorrow with even greater numbers as the occupiers look set to camp down on the roof

Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014
Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.
Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.
Name of Village HAJI USMAN JAKHRO, MAKKLI, District Thatta
Name of Midwife. Zoriyat.
Surrounding population 10,000. (Ten Thousand)
Delivery in Solar Light 10 to 13 per month.
OPD patient / day 10.

On the fourth of July, the students got a tour of the many sustainable systems on campus including the aquaponics system, the farm, the wet lab and the Center for Sustainable Development.
I went to a lecture on designing sustainable services, such as food access and distribution initiatives. Interesting because when I think about sustainable design I usually think of physical structures, yet the lecture imparted that services too need to start being designed in a sustainable manner also.

A business-as-usual future is unsustainable. As we come to appreciate the challenges of climate change it is clear that the task of creating a sustainable economy requires more than incremental improvements in environmental efficiency, it demands radical innovation.
Francois Jégou is the first visitor in a series bringing leading international thinkers on eco-innovation to Australia: "ECO-LEAD" (organised by Sustainability Victoria and the Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab - VEIL).
Jégou is an important European designer; he is also a European expert in sustainability strategies. His expertise is derived from understanding that ideas of, and solutions for, sustainability are complex transformations that take place between multiple stakeholders, involving both social and technical innovation.
The art of being a strategic sustainable designer is to understand, hear and consider all stakeholder voices in the innovation process.
Francois work has focused on user-centred innovation, and design-oriented scenario development, envisaging new ways for companies to interact with consumers to create and instigate radical product innovation. In a similar way to the VEIL project, Jégou uses scenarios to investigate unknown outcomes and to provide an understanding of radical changes that may take place in the future. He is a partner with Ezio Manzini (a future ECO-LEAD visitor) in the global project known as "The Sustainable Every Day" which brings together visions of a sustainable future from extensive workshops in more than 18 countries.
Francois works from the top down and bottom up, looking at how small and medium enterprises can, through partnerships with other stakeholders and their clients (users), 'co-design' for sustainable futures, and create ‘new’ innovation opportunities. His participatory design methods help all stakeholders think outside of the box and understand solutions from multiple stakeholder views (company and user). Francois also understands that business cannot devise ‘new’ eco-innovation without consumer adoption. Thus much of his work is bottom up, searching social innovations to recognise new possibilities for the creation of sustainable lifestyles and the consequent products and services innovation, that may co-evolve.
Jégou has been working in sustainable production and consumption as a designer for many years and brings experience and thinking of many of the European union and UNEP funded research projects on product-service-systems, product innovation and sustainable consumption. This work has crossed many different sectors such as eco-packaging, health systems, senior friendly products, food design, and workplace design, involving practice-based work and research investigation. His extensive and diverse client base includes: EDF; MasterCard; Carrefour; Monprix; 3M; Boch; Ikea; Sony; Zanussi; KPN Orange; Roche Consumer Health; Saab; BMW; Coca-Cola; Douwe Egberts; Commune di Milano; Société de Developpement de la Region Bruxelloise.
VEIL is supported by the Sustainability Fund and the Victorian government, as a project of the Australian Centre for Science Innovation and Society at the University of Melbourne, in partnership with Monash University and RMIT.

The system seemingly changes every time I am between visits to Hong Kong. Also, the whole system used to fit above the doors but it only shows one station of the city's newest line, the South Island Line.
I purchased the new Sawyer squeeze filter system to replace my old filter and it will be used in the same way.
Top to bottom: Platypus 2 liter water reservoir with sipping hose, Crystal Geyser water bottle, Sawyer Squeeze filter, Sawyer filter adapter, Sawyer Squeeze bag.
I will carry the filled Platypus to tide me over between water sources . Using the Crystal Geyser bottle and filter I will drink from streams and lakes along the way.
In camp I will use the Squeeze bag as my "dirty" bag, filling it from the water source and, with filter attached, refill my "clean" platypus reservoir.
Total weight: 4.7 oz
New note post trip: The filter is great but the squeeze bag design leaves much to be desired. Will leave at home in the future (probably throw out). The crystal Geyser bottle worked very well and is all I really needed as a squeeze bottle.
UPDATE 7/2015: Have replaced this filter with the Sawyer Mini Filter system and love it.

Your employees must not only get used to new surroundings, they must also conduct business as usual even though for them nothing is as usual. Even the best planned moves are stressful.
So why is it that companies add to the stress by changing phone systems on the same day they move to a new location.
The answer is based on an old assumption that is no longer true. Management assumes the new VoIP Phone system should be installed in the new location and will be ready for use on the first day the new office opens.
If we were still in the era of the tradition PBX phone system, this would be true. Hosted VoIP has changed business telecommunications in many positive ways.
One of these benefits is that Hosted VoIP has simplified the installation process and costs nothing if you do it yourself. Still, many businesses assume they have to wait to install the VoIP system in their new office location..

This is the region between the original Alternating Graident Synchrotron (AGS) linac and the AGS itself as it appeared in 1960. 50 MeV proton beams leaves the linac at the upper left corner and travels down the 4 inch pipe to the lower right, passing through a series of focusing lenses and steering magnets. Just above the man in the foreground is a set of steering magnets for horizontal and vertical deflections. Several items of test gear necessary for proper adjustment are also located in this region. In the foreground is a "viewing box" with lucite covers over the drive mechanisms. The man in the background, wearing a head set for communication to the control room, is standing by an identical box. The pipe extending diagonally across the aisle is the exit pipe from an analyzer magnet which bends protons through about 25 degrees in order to allow a determination of the energy spread of the protons.
This system is built in a greenhouse and the source of water is a giant fish tank. These fish will grow up in the tank and will be used as food. The water is pumped into the pvc piping system which has been made into plant "baskets".

The IBM System 360 is an IBM mainframe computer, released in 1964. It was the first computer to separate architecture from implementation: the 360 had different models with different prices. Slightly modified radiation hardened versions (System/4 Pi) of this machine are used to control the Space Shuttle.
