"According to Greek mythology, when the god Jupiter decided to flood the earth to destroy the warring men, the goddess Astraea was so upset she asked to be turned into a star. Her wish was granted, but when the flood waters receded she wept for the loss of lives. As her tears turned to stardust and fell to earth, the beautiful aster flower sprung forth."

Temple guardians are placed at the entrance to a temple to ward off evil. Each of these guardians hold a vajra for crossing ignorance. Their open and closed mouths represent a and un, the first and final syllables of Siddham (a script to write Sanskrit): these syllables symbolize all spoken sounds and scripts, thus all knowledge. Whoreshippers who enter the temple precinct through the guardians' gate symboliccaly aquire this knowledge.

Few cities in the world capture the imagination as much as Bangkok. Galata Tower, built in 1348 by the Genoese as part of their fortifications, is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks. Originally a watchtower, it later served as a fire lookout during the Ottoman era. Standing 67 meters tall, it offers stunning panoramic views of the city. The tower symbolizes Istanbul’s rich history, blending Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman influences. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the Galata district’s heritage.

In almost every part of the world, the Dragonfly symbolizes change, transformation, adaptability, and self-realization. The change that is often referred to has its source in mental and emotional maturity and understanding the deeper meaning of life.

To the Japanese, it symbolizes summer and autumn and is admired and respected all over, so much so that the Samurai used it as a symbol of power, agility and best of all, Victory. In China, people associate the dragonfly with prosperity, harmony and as a good luck charm.

A being with tentacles on its face, elegantly dressed, symbolizes the fusion of the strange and the sophisticated. Its presence stands out not only for its unusual appearance but also for its harmony with its surroundings: a melting chair reflects the fluidity of time, while a temple of crocodiles, imposing and mysterious, suggests a space where the ancient and the surreal coexist in perfect symmetry, challenging our perception of what is elegant and possible.

A tengu mask in Japanese culture symbolizes protection, wisdom, and a connection to mountain spirits, but also the duality of good and evil, arrogance and cunning. It is used in rituals, dances, and theaters such as Noh and Kabuki to represent the multifaceted nature of the mythological creature, the tengu, which is half human, half bird and often possesses a long red nose and wings.

Urban Bonds. A bicycle symbolizes the yearning for freedom and movement, yet its chain serves an anchor, tethering it—and us—to urban life. It embodies a delicate balance aspiration and constraint.

The acorn, symbolizing potential and growth, stands isolated amidst the encroaching void, reflecting the futility of hope in a world overridden by decay. The blurred silhouette in the background amplifies the sense of detachment, underscoring the haunting reality of existence where dreams wither before they can bloom. This poignant piece starkly contrasts the fragility of life against the relentless march of entropy.

I'll be going now...

Hyperbole aside, this will be my last post for awhile (for a positive reason). Tomorrow will be my last day in Montana, and I debated over which shot to symbolize it with. I settled on the real final shot I ever took out here. It truly symbolizes a lot. Seen ripping along the 4th Sub back home to Missoula, the first opportunity (opportunity vs doing it is another discussion I suppose) I had to shoot the business train is also the last time it would ever run. The railroad would fall 8 days later. The cars will certainly haul passengers again, but will never again be carrying the flag of Montana's proudest company. The trip was to celebrate the retirement of the Vice President, with his entire career served at MRL. For me though, it celebrated the end of one lifetime, and the beginning of another in the not so distant future. In the nine months following this shot, I haven't felt the urge to pick up the camera, save for a fun trip into Moab. It's just not the same. The 4300's are gone, both of the immaculate 4406/4408 on this train, along with all the other 4400's are now unrecognizable in Helena Helper service, the SD45's have been cut up (355 remains), the 355, 290 and all the GP9's sit in a deadline at Livingston. Even the gas train no longer takes the 10th Sub westbound, one of the best chases in the country. No MRL power leads mainline trains anymore, save for a few locals. The party is truly over, at least for me. I'm fortunate to have been able to document so much of this railroad, the good and the bad. When people talk about ol big blue and tell how things were, I don't need to listen... I lived it. See you on the other side!!

This is such a lovely pose.

It can be symbolized in so many ways to tell someone that you love them, holding their heart close to you or that your own heart is broken and needs a cushion.

Cherry blossoms, known as sakura, symbolize the fleeting nature of life. They are stunning in full bloom but only last a few weeks before falling and withering away. This duality represents both life and death, beauty and violence. As spring brings new life, the blooming sakura exudes vitality, yet their short lifespan reminds us of life's transience.

Sakura is a prominent symbol in Japanese culture, appearing in art, film, poetry, and literature. Historically, they represented the brief, colorful lives of samurai, who lived by a strict moral code called bushido. Fallen cherry blossoms symbolized the end of a samurai's life.

During World War II, kamikaze pilots adorned their planes with sakura, symbolizing a beautiful, honorable death for the emperor. In Japanese folk religions, cherry blossom trees were associated with agricultural fertility, believed to be the dwelling places of deities who transformed into rice paddy gods.

The Hanami ritual celebrates the transient beauty of cherry blossoms. Known as "flower viewing," it involves gazing at the flowers, a practice that dates back to ancient times when farmers prayed and made offerings under the trees for a bountiful harvest. Today, Hanami is a beloved annual event where families and friends gather for picnics and parties under the cherry blossoms, enjoying food, drinks, and each other's company.

Seeing a green heron can symbolize patience, wisdom, and the ability to adapt to different situations, according to some spiritual perspectives on bird symbolism. They are often associated with stillness, observing surroundings before acting, and perseverance. In some traditions, herons in general, are seen as symbols of transformation and solitude.

The baptistery is an octagonal building that symbolizes the eighth day (octava dies), the time of Christ's Ascension. It symbolized eternal life, which is given by baptism. The style of the church served as a prototype for Leone Battista Alberti's construction of other Romanesque churches in Tuscany. The exterior is decorated with statues by Andrea Sansovino, Giovan Francesco Rustici and Vincenzo Danti.

The stone sculptures in Sno, a small village in the Kazbegi region of Georgia, are part of a remarkable art project in the Caucasus. These sculptures consist of impressive stone artworks depicting giant faces, often with a melancholic or mysterious expression. They were created by local artist Merab Piranishvili, who is renowned for his unique ability to bring faces and emotions to life in natural stone. Working primarily with local stones, he carves expressive facial features that tell stories about life, the soul, and the deep connection with nature. The sculptures symbolize the ancient wisdom of the mountain dwellers and the spirit of the past. The faces sometimes appear sad or contemplative, reflecting both the challenges and the beauty of life in the Caucasus. Fully integrated into the surrounding landscape, the sculptures stand among the mountains, hills, and rugged grasslands, blending seamlessly with their natural environment. This is what makes Piranishvili’s work so unique: he respects the natural shapes of the stones and subtly adds human characteristics without compromising their raw, natural beauty. Piranishvili often works directly in the field, selecting local stones and carving them with a hammer and chisel. He carefully considers the natural form of each stone, adapting his designs to create a result that looks organic and harmonizes with the surrounding environment.

Sno is located near the breathtaking Stepantsminda area and the imposing Mount Kazbegi. The stone sculptures are a hidden gem in this region, attracting an increasing number of art enthusiasts and travelers. The site exudes a serene, almost meditative atmosphere—perfect for those seeking something unique off the beaten path. If you ever find yourself near Kazbegi, these sculptures are well worth a visit. They offer a truly unique experience where art and nature come together in perfect harmony.

Symbolizing both benevolence and malevolence, the fox is sometimes identified with the messenger of the kami Inari in Japanese mythology.

Statues of foxes are found in great numbers both inside and outside shrines dedicated to the rice and fertility god.

At the Toyokawa Inari Betsuin Temple in Tokyo, we saw hundreds of these kitsune fox statues bedecked in their bright red bibs (a sign of their divinity) with some holding a scroll in their mouth, symbolizing their roles as messengers of the gods. They were surrounded by complimentary red and white flags, Inari's traditional colours.

Built in 1828, many of its structures are Shinto, but this is a Buddhist temple of the Sōtō Zen sect.

You know where this is, you've seen it before. This shot is used in all the promotional material for Japan. After seeing it so many times, I'd argue this shot symbolizes Japan (on a photographic level at least). Hence my title choice, which is one of the primary nicknames for the country. It's truly unbelievable that this island nation has THE longest history in the world, one of the most respectable cultures, managed to preserve it's strength through centuries of self isolation, has some of the most beautiful landscapes in both urban and natural backgrounds. And on a personal note, the strive for perfectionism in Japan is inspiring to no end. And Shinto is one of the better religions I've had the privilege to research. Japan is a near perfect country.

This shot however, is not. I'm actually a little embarrassed to release it in this state. So why is it here at all? The conditions for getting this shot, I would not allow myself to walk away from this one. Up before dawn to get "the rising sun", the road up to Arakurayama was closed. I'm no hiker, so walking up all those flights of stairs might have been one of the most grueling and physically demanding things I've had to do in this country (even Fushimi wasn't as tiring as this).

On top of that, I made the massive mistake to shoot this with a slow shutter, even with a tripod there were many problems. Every angle I got here had a problem of random blurs of light. I had to balance out the clarity and the noise reducer in editing, and certain pieces are still out of proportion. This is still the best angle I got here and this is as good as this image is going to get. I was actually a little worried it would look like an AI image when I was finally done with it. My associate said I was overexaggerating and that it was fine so I uploaded it anyway. But I will gladly hit this location again in the future, I must never lose the strive for perfection, at all of these places and angles.

The color red symbolizes intense situations and emotions but at the same time it indicates warning and danger.

My red sky is a sky which reflects strong human emotions, covering them like a blanket and thus giving a sense of safety and hope.

Prunis subhirtella "Pendula" or Weeping (a willow) Higan Cherry.I didn't have to get under this cherry blossom tree because it was pretty much at eye level and in front of me.I read that Japanese like to sit underneath the cherry flowering trees because of what they symbolize which is beauty and a short-lived existence. Also, the Japanese know when it's time for their kids to go back to school once they see the flowers are dying.Japan's school year begins in the month of April.

Symbolizing rebirth and new beginnings, the daffodil is virtually synonymous with spring. Though their botanic name is narcissus, daffodils are sometimes called jonquils, and in England, because of their long association with Lent, they’re known as the “Lent Lily.” Lore connecting the daffodil to not only a sign of winter’s end but a lucky emblem of future prosperity is found throughout the world. In Wales, it’s said if you spot the first daffodil of the season, your next 12 months will be filled with wealth, and Chinese legend has it that if a daffodil bulb is forced to bloom during the New Year, it will bring good luck to your home.

Welcome to the future, Dubai Metro, UAE.

Bur Juman station symbolizes the rapid growth of Dubai, which has been a sleepy fishing village until 1970s.

The luxury chandeliers are anything but jellyfishes drifting at the mercy of the waves. The fan-shaped ceiling is a memorial of pearl oysters which divers used to collect within the sea.

The past is gone, but I think getting back to the roots is important to live in the present, and to believe in the future.

Thanks for your interest in my work and special thanks for your nice comments and faves. They are always appreciated.

This photo symbolizes a very dark but beautiful period in my life, after which I could walk back into the light again.

Dark, because on January 21st I nearly lost my life due to a heart infarct. The larger half of my heart was fully blocked and when I entered hospital my temperature had dropped to 34 degrees Celcius.

Beautiful, because during that period several people were fighting for my life and I think that is the most beautiful gift a person can get.

I took this photo on one of the first walks after leaving hospital. I would have loved to get the beautiful girl a bit larger in the frame (I loved her hair waving in the wind) but at the time all I could do was keep up with her, not to catch up with her. So, it was a bit of a difficult shot as both of us were on the move. Even if the girl had not been there I would have taken a photo anyway because I think the diffused light and colors in the top of the trees is absolutely beautiful. Yet another gift that I received.

It is located at the rear of the Pacific War Memorial dome on a raised platform which provides visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of Manila Bay, the Bataan Peninsula, and the coastline of Cavite. Designed by Aristides Demetrios, the sculpture commemorates the sacrifices, hopes and aspirations, and the heroic struggle by the United States and the Philippines to preserve freedom for future generations. The sculpture stands as a reminder that all men will fight as one if need to be to defend a nation's liberty.

Ukraine survived a military battle in 2023 against the huge and rich Russia. Ukrainians lived through this terrible and difficult year in all respects, 2023, with dignity. We hoped for the best, but life, as always, is harsher and indifferent to hopes. Tomorrow is 2024. This is a symbolic day on the calendar, but it measures time, allows you to acutely feel losses and think about the future. No one knows what future awaits all of us living in this world, but we all believe in the best. There is no other way to live.

Wishing everyone happiness and peace in the New Year 2024. Glory to Ukraine! 💙💛

The evergreen tree has long symbolized life itself. Spruce is considered a symbol of eternity. Nature can freeze and bloom, but spruce, like life, is eternal. It remains green at any time of the year and represents immortality, eternal youth, courage, fidelity, longevity and dignity.

New Year is the main calendar holiday that occurs at the moment of transition from the last day of the current year to the first day of the next year. Celebrated by many states and their citizens in accordance with accepted traditions.

Symbolism: Flowers often symbolize growth, renewal, and the cycle of life. Similarly, mushrooms can symbolize transformation and regeneration as they emerge and contribute to the decomposition process in nature.

Each one would be exciting to capture as an individual specimen. I'm hoping for new individuals to surface. I'm thinking that if anyone else finds them, they'll be history (destroyed). This was a 60-image stack, just enough with my settings to capture them all.

Sif is traditionally depicted with long, golden hair which some scholars claim symbolizes wheat.

She is part of a divine fertility couple as Sif represents the soil of the earth and the golden bounty of the fields.

Thor, the thunder god, represents the rain that fertilizes that soil to produce crops.

As a jest, Loki the Trickster, cut Sif's golden hair, leaving her bald and heartbroken. This may represent the harvesting of the crops and the stubble left in the fields.

Thor forced Loki to replace the cut hair with golden locks.

In my picture the replacement is a crown formed of wheat heads and swirling flag leaves, which Sif wears over her regrown hair, which is once again almost ready to harvest.

Few things symbolize the American West more than the Bison. This Bison was climbing a small hill, trying to rejoin the herd, in Lamar Valley on the northern edge of the park.

Magnolia is a very strong plant that is resistant to natural conditions, unlike other delicate flowers.
