Located on the banks of the Calonne (a small watercourse), the church of Fontaine-la-Louvet, of Romanesque origin (not visible in the picture), was rebuilt in the 15th century in stone and flint. From the Romanesque period, only the apse remains. To the north are two chapels from the first half of the 16th century, with stone and flint chequerboard walls. This is one of the chapels. The dark flint stones symbolize the people and the light sandstone the church. The entrance gate, placed to the west, is sheltered by a half-timbered porch from the 16th century.

Antwerp, Estación Central.

(...) Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Austerlitz began, in reply to my questions about the history of the building of Antwerp station, when Belgium, a little patch of yellowish gray barely visible on the map of the world, spread its sphere of influence to the African continent with its colonial enterprises, when deals of huge proportions were done on the capital markets and raw-materials exchanges of Brussels, and the citizens of Belgium, full of boundless optimism, believed that their country, which had been subject so long to foreign rule and was divided and disunited in itself, was about to become a great new economic power—at that time, now so long ago although it determines our lives to this day, it was the personal wish of King Leopold, under whose auspices such apparently inexorable progress was being made, that the money suddenly and abundantly available should be used to erect public buildings which would bring international renown to his aspiring state. One of the projects thus initiated by the highest authority in the land was the central station of the Flemish metropolis, where we were sitting now, said Austerlitz; designed by Louis Delacenserie, it was inaugurated in the summer of 1905, after ten years of planning and building, in the presence of the King himself.

Delacenserie's eclecticism, uniting past and future in the Centraal Station with its marble stairway in the foyer and the steel and glass roof spanning the platforms, was in fact a logical stylistic approach to the new epoch, said Austerlitz, and it was also appropriate, he continued, that in Antwerp Station the elevated level from which the gods looked down on visitors to the Roman Pantheon should display, in hierarchical order, the deities of the nineteenth century—mining, industry, transport, trade, and capital. For halfway up the walls of the entrance hall, as I must have noticed, there were stone escutcheons bearing symbolic sheaves of corn, crossed hammers, winged wheels, and so on, with the heraldic motif of the beehive standing not, as one might at first think, for nature made serviceable to mankind, or even industrious labor as a social good, but symbolizing the principle of capital accumulation.

And Time, said Austerlitz, represented by the hands and dial of the clock, reigns supreme among these emblems. The clock is placed above the only baroque element in the entire ensemble, the cruciform stairway which leads from the foyer to the platforms, just where the image of the emperor stood in the Pantheon in a line directly prolonged from the portal; as governor of a new omnipotence it was set even above the royal coat of arms and the motto Endracht maakt macht. The movements of all travelers could be surveyed from the central position occupied by the clock in Antwerp Station, and conversely all travelers had to look up at the clock and were obliged to adjust their (...)

ENG: The Lübeck Lions are animal statues depicting life-size lions, which on the one hand symbolize Lübeck's origin as a lion city, but also stand for its fortitude as such. Two of them have gained worldwide fame due to their placement in front of Lübeck's landmark Holstentor. The right lion which is here in the picture looks as if he is examining every visitor. The left one which is not in the photo is about 3 meters away and seems to be taking a nap. That's why I chose the one on the right. ☻

The merchant Johann Daniel Jacobj had the two resting lions made in iron casting by the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry in the middle of the 19th century and had them placed in front of his house. (...) After they were housed in Lübeck's St.-Annen-Museum after the end of the war, they have been resting on low stone pedestals out of town at the end of the small park in front of the Holsten Gate since 1949.

The Palendorp is a monument that symbolizes an old village that has completely disappeared into the sea since 1792. This beautiful work of art consists of 160 poles of six to twelve meters high. The poles are in the shape of 10 houses and a church.

The current village is already the fourth Petten. The third, situated around the current cemetery where the church stood, was demolished by order of the German occupiers in 1943 because the Atlantkwall had to be built there — an entire village disappeared…

Ravens symbolize a complex mix of wisdom, magic, mystery, and transformation, but can also be associated with death, prophecy, and ill-omen across different cultures. They are seen as messengers from the cosmos, tricksters, and creators, while in literature and mythology, they are often linked to the cycles of death and rebirth, or the darker side of the subconscious.

The daffodil symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings. It became associated with new beginnings (and the coming of spring) because it is one of the first perennials to bloom after the winter frost. ... The Latin name for daffodil is Narcissus. It is believed to be named after the son of the river god from Greek mythology.

Kanji is one of the 3 oldest writing systems in Japan. It is however the most complex. Japanese Kanji symbols are actually taken from China, and like Chinese characters each symbol doesn’t actually represent a letter of the alphabet. Instead, each kanji symbol represents a word or a sound. In this respect they’re somewhat similar to hieroglyphics.

According to the language of flowers, a daisy symbolizes innocence and purity. A daisy means “day’s eye” (from Old English’s “daegeseage”) because the petals open during the day revealing its yellow centers and then close at night. Daisy, with its happy, fresh image, was a celebrated girls' name starting in the 19th century, when other flowers (violet, lily, rose, magnolia) were also doing double duty as given names.

Last week I photographed my ring for Macro Mondays, a ring that symbolizes many beautiful and precious memories. For this week's theme I have again chosen a piece of jewelry with equally beautiful and precious memories. The necklace and pendant were my mother's, she wore it often. I rarely wear it myself but it is very precious to me.

I wish you a good start of a new week. Thank you for your views, faves and comments, they are all much appreciated! Please don't use this image on websites, blogs or other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved.

Month: OCTOBER

Classic Steampunk style is associated with machine technology and fine Victorian clothing. But the style and character of the costume create by details and colors.

The photo is made in hot shades of orange, yellow, brown. These colors that are combined in our imagination with the rust of metal and fallen leaves in October. Dark details and shadows speak of the approaching night, remind of the magical time of spirits (Halloween, All Saints' Day, Day of the Dead, Samhain) - this is symbolized by bats. And the large clock on the tower reminds us that time always advances and we cannot stop its progress. Only to live with dignity every moment.

People often say that the red hibiscus symbolizes Goddess Kali's tongue.

The small and delicate butterfly symbolizes summer for me. The various colors and shapes of this vulnerable beauty have accompanied me since I was a boy. The butterfly still fascinates me today because its dancing encounters in the air seem so free. However, if you encounter a butterfly in the evening or early morning, it is usually quiet, probably enjoying the moment of peace. This year, I was able to photograph the various butterfly species relatively well, something I don't always manage. I haven't been out and about very often, but I've always seen butterflies somewhere out there in the wild, in the delicately fragrant meadow of flowers.

Next summer is sure to come...

Ivy symbolizes fidelity (it won’t easily let go of something it’s attached itself to) and eternal life (because the plant is evergreen).

I plant this ivy outside into summer planters and move it inside into a basement window over the winter. I have kept this going, in this manner, for about three years.

We have been gone all summer. This little plant has survived a very hot summer! It brings joy!!!

Mute Swans symbolize Love, Purity and Unity. It comes from the fact that these birds form long-term pair bonds, often remaining as a mated pair for years. What you see here is a female swan cozied-up on the edge of the pond.

The Tungam Chham, or Dance of the Terrifying Deities, is a traditional Bhutanese ritual performed during religious festivals to symbolize the triumph of good over evil. It features dancers in elaborate costumes and masks, representing deities who subdue harmful spirits and guide them toward salvation. This image captures a masked dancer spinning in a burst of vibrant brocade during the sacred dance. The swirling robes, fierce deity mask, and rhythmic movement symbolize the victory of wisdom over chaos. The photo was taken at the Thimphu Tshechu festival.

Peaches symbolizing immortality (or the wish for a long and healthy life) are a common symbol in Chinese art, appearing in depictions or descriptions in a number of fables, paintings, and other forms of art, often in association with thematically similar iconography, such as certain deities or immortals.
