Jeanne Dobie is a well-known American watercolorist and author of the book Making Color Sing. She wrote: "Have you ever looked into a lake or pond or even a rain puddle and discovered with surprise that the reflection looks better than the actual scene? Something indefinable happens when the subject is transposed. It is not quite the same as the scene; it is an "image" of the scene. When we, as artists, view a landscape, our minds also act as mirrors, reflecting what we see much like the lake or pond. Therefore, to be creative, we should paint the reflection in the mind, and not the scene."

Sun rises later everyday, now. A chill of winter is on the horizon but melancholy linked to the imminence of harsh weather, must die in the color that still lives in most grayish days.

Still going through the hundreds of shots done while Kerstine was visiting. Tonight is frost moon night and twilight will be with friends at a beach nearby!

Sunday morning. Me and my friends got up early, as usual. Nuno arrived from London and he was desperate for some photos. Last time he was here, we headed to the Sintra Mountains looking for a misty sunrise but we had no luck. That happened again this past weekend. No clouds, no mist. Since Azenhas is really close, and we did not want to miss sunrise (and i knew the tide was high) we decided to go there. Oh wow, surprise, surprise, I had never seen such raging seas! The natural pool is now totally filled with sand and the waves break close to the place where we were. We had to run away a couple of times and, once again, our friend Luís got wet. Nothing it didn't happen before. I love my sunday mornings, they are usually full of adrenaline. :))

Love the diagonal tension caused by the interplay of the water lines and the wall curve.

March 08. Yesterday, a very dramatic end of day and the lowest tide of the year! The sea was absolutely gorgeous. I am leaving to another sunrise, see ya later for more :)

"Hi,

Im 51 Buggie 2, tunisian , i was navigating any where when i for the first time discovered Flickr, i saw ur photos yesterday, i liked lots of them, especially photos that contain an allusion to an abstract idea, idont like building compositions and general landscapes..the big amount of ur photos is of course a quite nice souvenir of ur trips all around the world, i had great acknowledges about avenues, interiors, famous places...that's beautiful too but when i watched the whole 800 photos i discovered an other dimension of an original and genious marvellous shots..i selected about 55 splendid works, i was excited by the content, the composition, the lighting, these subjects express ideas and bring out abstract qualities such as personal characters, sympathy, humor, analytic observation... really bright work!!.I really enjoyed the voyage behind ur lens, on my screen wallpaper i choosed that old lady looking from her window to this world, down the street where people walk, buy, phone, shout, harrying up to what and why !!!, her arms closed gave her a socratic upper view to that portion of the city also her clothes synchronised with the wall colour then her woollen hat that has not only the same colour of the wall but the same texture , it s a perfect photo in compos.chromatism and especially a silent message that u brought out..i love also the intervall between red books, the russian oblic shot of the small girl in green, the kid in orange parallelizing the pigeon, the water drops on the small dry branches, the heart red veines, the bee stink, the lonely girl on chair near the beer in bl n white, the cracking sky, the human face, the stop lights of cars at a rainy nigh, the light coming from the ochre arc door, the ballerina smoke, the torn blue jean..etc, i d like to thank u and encourage ur fine and concise talent in this beautiful domain. Butterfly 2, my children my wife and i send u our congratulations for all the beauty u spread on our screen this weekend to make eyes see life alive and from the wright angle.

we hope to see more excellent works from u.

one old amateur, "

he brought tears to my eyes and this is why I am such a Flickr addict!!

My friends n i will be watching sunrise from here, next weekend. i can't wait for that to happen, plus the tide will be really low so we can explore this place further.

EDIT: So many of you have said that would love to be there...hey, you are all invited it will be a huge party and a lot of fun.:))

Tide was getting high and the sea was really rough, trully the opposite from what is depicted here thanks to the long exposure. The orange vivid tones are due to a huge street lamp on the parking lot. This is on the same place as this one but the opposite direction and shot later.

It was by making photographs that I learned to be an artist. But as I learned to be an artist I grew away from photography. Photography - no matter how trivial - comes between a person and the world, and the better you get at it the more true that is.

So very different from most of the beaches we have visited, Portinho da Arrábida is a deep sandy cove, a jewel, hidden by the mountain scenery of Serra de Arrábida. Being a very small fishing village, you will find Portinho when driving west along the southern coast of Setúbal. Let me tell you, this is the perfect place for two, :) the mist and the fog on the mountains surrounding the cove, a very calm turquoise blue water and a white sandy beach are wonderful add-ons to a long romantic walk on the beach. Better then a bottle of tabasco ;)) sounds good? Have a wonderful week, everybody!!!

As i told you before, today me and my friends went to one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. After a tremendous walk on a steep ravine we finally got there: a wild beach called Praia da Ursa. Only nudists, dogs, a fantastic scenario, the most wonderful light, amazing temperatures, jeez...you would not believe....a true dream!! well we cannot say the same about the way back, it was a nightmare :P....rewarded with a wonderful dinner and a bunch of really cool beers. What a wonderful day!

I've told you, already, how much i love to go to the same places more than once to experiment new approaches on handling the same subject. So today i was reading a book about lighting techniques and i found this quote from Vince Lombardi and I think this is a wonderful advise to many of us on Flickr.

In photography the golden hour is the first and last hour of sun when lighting is softer and warm in hue. In landscape photography, warm hues are considered desirable to 'enhance' the colours. On this day, the sky was quite stunning and this shot doesn't pay justice to that beauty but i guess it's close enough :)

The City of the Bridges

The city of Porto is aka "The City of the Bridges". There are 6 bridges crossing the Douro river. This is the Arrábida Bridge, it's arch is about 52m tall and the plate rises up to 70m above water level. Not my favorite bridge in Porto but it looks quite nice on this one :)

aka golden hour. After sunset on the other side of the beach.

Met my friends at 4.30 am today and drove west to explore a new destination: Malhada do Ouriçal. We arrived at Cabo da Roca around 5.00 am. All of us were a bit scared of coming down but... we decided that we would do it until we could and that nobody would risk it's safety. Tough one, i tell you, but worth every second. Such a wonderful place: strong sea currents, huge waves crashing there in front of us and the scenary, awww it was beautiful. Low tide peak at 9 am. Kerstine, get ready buddy!:) I will go there again, soon, to chase the afternoon light.

Close to the border with Spain, Moledo's seascape is totally out of this world and a wonderful escape from the crowds of the Algarve (south of Portugal) which are unbearable at this time of the year! This is the best place you can go to recharge your batteries, i tell you! and you can tell (from all these pics) how much i missed Flickr :)

Autumn is the eternal corrective. It is ripeness and color and a time of maturity;

but it is also breadth, and depth, and distance....

The sea water, up north, is very dangerous and unpredictable. I had to run, with my camera and tripod in hand, once or twice. Huge waves were crushing, not that far from me, delivering tons of gallons of water at once. Rough sea i tell ya, beautiful for long exposures yet very tricky. At that time, i did not have a tide table on me but i knew the tide was coming up, fast. So, all pics done in Moledo, were shot under a bit of stress :) as i was on my own and had to be extremely careful.. Anyway, it was worth it.

in The Lord of the Rings

Dusk again and tide was coming down…felt great to be alone here and listening to the waves slowly crashing on the shore, almost as if silence can’t, and should not be, disturbed. A beautiful end of afternoon on the beach, once again... Have a wonderful weekend everybody :)

and if you should ever leave

i could still tell you

that i couldn't love you

Title and words by Over the Rhine, a band i had the pleasure to hear about yesterday. It's beautiful.

It's amazing how fast color temperature changes when a new day rises. Warmer colors at the lower end of the color temperature range: Yellow, orange and red merge in a graded scale of color.

first light, pink shades - big

Magoito, shot the opposite direction of this one but earlier.

I can shoot frames for hours. The movement and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks sooths me to the point where i totally forget time and surroundings. So frequently, after water shooting sessions, i end up with hundreds of very similar frames and people around me say: " Oh, but they all look the same" well, uh... not for me. I can notice the smallest differences between all the frames and relate them to every thought crossing my mind while i was shooting 'em. This one was shot standing from a very high spot on the cliff look down to sea. (see where Luis is standing on the previous shot)

i can spend hours looking and shooting wildflowers. Actually i could spend hours looking and shooting anything. I just forget everything else in this world. It's definitely an addiction but it's also called "practice the art of seeing". True, the more images you take with your camera, the better you will become at seeing how your camera sees. Of course, this a great excuse for endless pleasure hours :)))

A series of very long exposures shot way after the sun had set. This one was shoot around 7.12 pm at ISO 800. The colors depicted were achieved by playing with white balance, ISO, exposure time, filters and polarizers all at once (the "bend and break" approach aka "let's see what comes out of it", LMAO)
