Sandal Castle was probably first built in the early 12th century after William de Warenne received the Manor of Wakefield from Henry I in about 1106.de Warenne shield
The earthwork motte and bailey castle was probably completed by about 1130.
The archaeological evidence suggests that the rebuilding in stone started at the very end of the 12th century and continued throughout much of the 13th century. The only documentary records relating to the building work are references to materials being supplied for building work in 1270 and 1275.
The castle seems to have been completely unoccupied from about 1600 until it was briefly re-fortified by a Royalist garrison in 1645 during the Civil Wars. The occupation lasted only a few months and the castle surrendered on 1 October 1645. In 1646 on the orders of Parliament the castle was stripped of its defences. The heap of stonework that was left quickly became overgrown. The masonry that did survive was revealed during the excavations in 1964 -1973.

We declare to the world
What the Lord has done
We will sing of His endless love
From the earth to the heavens
Praise be lifted high
To You our God

God, let Your presence fall
Fill us up to; overflowing
Surrendered by Your grace
We seek to see Your face

By the tranquil river's edge,
where soft winds blow,
A whispered tale of peace begins to weave.
The sun sets low,
casting a golden glow,
As nature bids the weary soul to leave.
In the meadow lush with flowers bright,
A gentle breeze caresses each bloom.
The sky in hues of pink and purple light,
Nature's lullaby dispels all gloom.
Beneath the ancient oak,
shadows play,
Leaves rustle secrets to the evening air.
Silent surrender marks the end of day,
A promise kept when life is laid bare.
Stars emerge as night takes her reign,
Guiding souls to rest in calm embrace.
In dreams they find no sorrow or pain,
Peaceful surrender in night's quiet place.

** What if we just surrender, surrender?
Baby, we could make it last forever
But only if we surrender, surrender
Baby, give me something to remember
So what if we just surrender? **

There are times in life when you feel like surrendering to the juggernaut that you feel is descending on you ....

This was actually quite an impromptu shot to take. I had just finished taking some light-trail photographs on a country road near Loch Tarsan and had headed to Jubilee Point on Loch Eck to see if it was suitable for another photoshoot I planned to take later that weekend ("Death Of Childhood Dreams"). It was ... but before heading home the idea for this shot popped into my head :)
The Grade I Listed Ashby de la Zouch Castle, a ruined fortification which is managed by English Heritage, in the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.
The castle was built by William, Lord Hastings, a favourite of Edward IV, after 1473, accompanied by the creation of a 3,000-acre park. Constructed on the site of an older manor house, two large towers and various smaller buildings had been constructed by 1483, when Hastings was executed by Richard, Duke of Gloucester. The Hastings family used the castle as their seat for several generations, improving the gardens and hosting royal visitors.
During the English Civil War of the 1640s, Henry, a younger son in the Hastings family, became a Royalist commander in the Midlands. He based himself out of the castle until he was forced to surrender it after a long siege. A fresh rebellion occurred in 1648, leading Parliament to slight the castle to prevent it being used militarily: the two towers were irreparably damaged with gunpowder and undermining. Parts of the remaining castle were turned into a new house and continued to be used by members of the Hastings family for many years, although they moved their main residence to Donington Hall.
The castle became famous after it featured in Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe in 1819, and its owner, Francis Rawdon, opened the ruins to visitors. Restoration work was carried out over the course of the next century, but by 1932 the Rawdon family could no longer afford to maintain the castle. It passed into the guardianship of the Ministry of Works, who carried out extensive repairs and opened the castle gardens before ownership was later transferred to English Heritage.

Masada is the name for a site of ancient palaces and fortifications in the South District of Israel on top of an isolated rock plateau, or large mesa, on the eastern edge of the Judean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. After the First Jewish-Roman War (also known as the Great Jewish Revolt) a siege of the fortress by troops of the Roman Empire led to the mass suicide of Jewish rebels, who preferred death to surrender.
Lately I've been feeling so ashamed
By these thoughts I'm hiding in my brain
'Cause I've been holding them down but they twist me violently
I'm hanging by a thread tonight but this time I don't wanna be saved (Saved)
So let me fall, let me break
Under everything unsaid
Just let me die 'cause I can't take
Living with what's in my head
If I surrender, surrender
To the monsters in me
If I surrender, surrender
To the monsters in me
Will it set me free?
What's the point of holding on like this?
When no one seems to care if I exist
There is no agony like being strong when no one knows you're sick
So sick of hearing I should stay when I know I would never be missed
So let me fall, let me break
Under everything unsaid
Just let me die 'cause I can't take
Living with what's in my head
If I surrender, surrender
To the monsters in me
If I surrender, surrender
To the monsters in me
If you could see under my skin
You'd realize why I hold it in
Why it's a fight I don't wanna win
Why it's a fight I don't wanna win
If you could see all my abuse
And spend a day inside my shoes
You'd realize why I just wanna lose
You'd realize why I just wanna lose
Will anyone believe the hell of being me
Before I decide to be the dying proof?
So let me fall, let me break
Under everything unsaid
Just let me die 'cause I can't take
Living with what's in my head
If I surrender, surrender
To the monsters in me
If I surrender, surrender
To the monsters in me
Will it set me free?

When we deliberately leave the safety of the shore of our lives, we surrender to a mystery beyond our intent.

I originally shot this for a book cover but the publishers ended up going a slightly different direction. I loved it though, and couldn't help myself with Halloween so near! I love Halloween but I'm terrified of all things scary, so in reality we shouldn't mix. The most I can do is watch Hocus Pocus, carve pumpkins, and bake apple crisp. All of which I am doing several times over.
I feel a sense of joy and lightness with the end of October nearing. It marks the end of a lot of travel, and there is nothing I value more than being home. To me, home is where I can settle into myself. I'm spending the next two months re-writing my novel, printing the new series I've been working on all year, and creating new works by myself and for myself. Home is an amazing place if you cultivate it as such.
