I was at Joshua Tree National Park, taking photos of this Juniper Tree, but I was mostly facing the other direction, toward the sunrise when I looked behind me and saw these amazing Lenticular Clouds on the horizon.
I think this is the first and only time I have witnessed Lenticulars, so I was pretty excited. I quickly moved around the tree and found this composition and was able to get this shot while the soft morning light was still available.
The title "Never Surrender" seems appropriate, because this Juniper tree is growing in the most harsh desert conditions, surrounded by nothing but rocks and sand, and has somehow managed to cling to life in the gap between these two large boulders.

There are times in life when you feel like surrendering to the juggernaut that you feel is descending on you ....

This was actually quite an impromptu shot to take. I had just finished taking some light-trail photographs on a country road near Loch Tarsan and had headed to Jubilee Point on Loch Eck to see if it was suitable for another photoshoot I planned to take later that weekend ("Death Of Childhood Dreams"). It was ... but before heading home the idea for this shot popped into my head :)

The "Unconditional Surrender" statue of a sailor and nurse kissing will be moved from San Diego to New Jersey after Memorial Day, loaned to San Diego in 2007 by the Sculpture Foundation, where it will undergo maintenance before the roughly 6,000-pound sculpture and its 24,000-pound base will be shipped to New Jersey according to the Port of San Diego. "This is kind of a bittersweet day for Americas Finest City"
After a busy week and week end, an opportunity came up to head out and explore after some bad weather started to clear. It great finding old ruins.
A Shed That Time Forgot
Beside the CN Rail tracks, this weathered structure is slowly surrendering to the landscape — a tangle of blackberry vines and ivy curling around a roof that once sheltered railway tools and the workers who maintained the line. It’s likely an old section shed, a place where crews gathered between long walks of the rails, to store their spike mauls, rail gauges and other tools.
I shot this with the Pentax 17 on FlicFilm’s new Apollo 18 — a brand new colour film that I’ve quite enjoyed. It has a character that reminds me of my beloved Kodachrome: rich reds, deep greens, and a kind of warmth that doesn’t oversell itself. There’s something in the way it handles wood grain and rust that feels timeless.
Shooting a new half-frame film camera with a brand new film stock, standing in front of century-old railway structure … that’s the kind of contrast I enjoy. New tools, old stories — and film still feels like the right language for it.

The recent heat-wave has been murder on my flowers. Poor things!

The challenge - Warm
I originally shot this for a book cover but the publishers ended up going a slightly different direction. I loved it though, and couldn't help myself with Halloween so near! I love Halloween but I'm terrified of all things scary, so in reality we shouldn't mix. The most I can do is watch Hocus Pocus, carve pumpkins, and bake apple crisp. All of which I am doing several times over.
I feel a sense of joy and lightness with the end of October nearing. It marks the end of a lot of travel, and there is nothing I value more than being home. To me, home is where I can settle into myself. I'm spending the next two months re-writing my novel, printing the new series I've been working on all year, and creating new works by myself and for myself. Home is an amazing place if you cultivate it as such.
