The surrender, which took place 21 – 27 November, saw 332 weapons handed in at police stations across Greater Manchester.

Samurai swords, kukri knives and a machete were among the haul of weapons dropped off by residents.

The anonymous surrender was supported by Rhian Jones, the mother of Dominic Doyle who was tragically stabbed to death on a night out in Tameside. He was just 21 years old when he died.

The knives will now be donated to the British Ironworks Centre, who will melt them down and transform into a statue in memory to those that have lost their life to knife crime.

Chief Inspector Debbie Dooley said: “During this one week alone, more than 300 knives were surrendered by members of the public, meaning there are fewer weapons on the streets that could potentially fall into the wrong hands.

“We’re pleased so many people took the opportunity to safely dispose of their bladed items and would like to thank the community for helping us to reduce knife crime and make the streets safer, which will ultimately save lives.”

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jim Battle said: “There has been a fantastic response from the public to this campaign and I want to say thank you. Your support has led to the surrender of more than 300 knives, taking them out of circulation and putting them into safe hands.”

To report a crime, call Greater Manchester Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The statue commemorates the famous V-J embrace in Times Square, photographed by Alfred Eisenstaedt. The statue itself has provided some debate on it's "artistic merit" and spent several years being moved from Florida to San Diego to New Jersey and eventually back to San Diego. Given the large veteran population that resides in the greater San Diego area, it seems an appropriate locale.

Love it or hate it, it's a wonderful photo op, is conveniently located near the USS Midway museum and the nearby Fish Market restaurant is fantastic.

Copy of letter (22 February 1833) from Thomas Haughton, Kelvin Grove, Carlow, to Sir William Gossett, Under-Secretary for Ireland, Dublin Castle, in connection with the surrender of arms by members of the Whitefeet in Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow and Goresbridge, Co. Kilkenny.

The Whitefeet were one of a number of secret societies in operation in Ireland during the nineteenth century. They used violent tactics to achieve their objectives, which were centred around improvements in the circumstances of rural workers and tenant farmers. There was a focus on issues connected with land such as evictions, high rents, tenure and tithes.

The image above shows page 1 of the letter. The letter reads as follows:

Copy of Public Correspondence

Kelvin Grove Carlow 22 Feb. 1833

Sir

I have the honor to state for the information of his Excellency the Lord Lieut. that in consequence of repeated interviews, which Mr Howard Moore and I have had with the Revd. P. Kehoe P.P. of Leighlin Bridge we proceeded on Wednesday the 13 Inst. to the neighbourhood of Old Leighlin and there received Ten Stand of arms which were surrendered by “the Whitefeet.”

And on Tuesday the 19 Inst. I proceeded to same place & received in addition 4 stand making 14 stand from that hitherto badly infected neighbourhood.

I then proceeded to the neighbourhood of Gores Bridge, & thro’ the agency of the Revd. Jas. Maher P.P. obtained a voluntary surrender of 19 Stand of Arms there – making a total of 33 stand or pieces of all Arms as p[er] enclosed list.

The condition of the Arms obtained in the Leighlin district is generally good, some appear to have been Yeomanry muskets & Horse pistols [ ] fowling pieces & a Brass [Bar?] Blunderbuss in perfect order.

Those obtained at Goresbridge are not so well appointed, but nevertheless were capable of being made a dangerous use of in the hands of lawless persons.

Mr Moore and I have of course made no conditions with any of the parties further than this; that in all cases on a full & unconditional surrender & subsissin [sic, submission?] to the law being made, we on our part promised to use our best exertions to obtain the clemency & protection of his Excellency towards such of those lawless people as had not been guilty of murder or any aggravated felony, and I make no doubt , if it shall be his Excellencys pleasure to delegate to the Magistrates of this County such power to give “protections” that a very considerable further surrender of Arms may be expected; and the very best consequences must be the result, as from the enquiry we have been able to make, we are of opinion that as regards the district of Old Leighlin, that there were three distinct “gangs” of acting Whitefeet yet their number did not exceed 25 in all from whom we have already received 14 Stand of Arms.

By reference to dates his Excellency cannot fail to observe that the arrangements herein referred to had been made sometime previous to the promulgation of the proposed strong measures on the part of H.M. Govt. otherwise it might be inferred that those contemplated measures had produced the submissin [sic] herein noted.

You will be pleased to inform me as to his Excellencys pleasure on the following questions.

1st As to how far Mr. Moore & myself & other magistrates may be warranted in giving “protections” to persons making submissin [sic] or surrendering Arms; and the form thereof, and if so permitted, whether any and what securities may be requisite as to the future good conduct of the parties.

2nd If we are warranted in hereafter restoring to the lawful owners (some of whom have claimed them) any of the Arms in our possession, and further how we are to dispose of the residue.

In conclusion I beg to state I should be wanting in the discharge or a public duty if I failed in most respectfully bringing under the notice of his Excellency the unceasing exertions of the two Clergymen herein named in their endeavours to recall the people of their neighbourhoods to a due sense of their past misconduct; and in the attainment of which object they appear to have been signally successful & in this report Mr. Moore fully concurs &c &c

This is the result of having 2 professional ballet dancers in the studio, who are up for a challenge and something different.

How do you capture their graceful, often powerful movements and action in such a static medium?

These two are super-toned performers.

I salute them.

They are balancing on the barre while I was balancing the lighting.

thanx for your time and comments, M, (*_*)

Nikolai Khabibulin - Nikolai Alexandrovich Khabibulin ( born January 13, 1973) is a Russian former professional ice hockey goaltender. Known by the nickname "The Bulin Wall", he spent the majority of his playing career in the National Hockey League with the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Edmonton Oilers. Khabibulin excelled at the international level, winning two Olympic medals (gold and bronze) and was named Best Goaltender at the 2002 Winter Olympics. He was the first Russian goaltender to win the Stanley Cup, doing so with Tampa Bay in 2004; until 2020, he was also the only Russian goaltender to start in the Finals. He is also a four-time NHL All-Star.

Playing career - Winnipeg Jets / Phoenix Coyotes (1994–99)

Khabibulin was selected in the ninth round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Winnipeg Jets. In the 1993–94 season, he played with the touring Russian Penguins and by the start of the NHL season in January 1995, was playing in the NHL. In 1996, he moved with the Jets to Phoenix, Arizona, where they became the Phoenix Coyotes. In five years with the Jets / Coyotes franchise, he started at least 60 games in three of those seasons (including two instances in which he played 70 games), a heavy workload for a goaltender. Although the team made the Stanley Cup playoffs each of these years, some claimed that their first-round exits were partly due to Khabibulin being fatigued from playing so many regular season games.

Tampa Bay Lightning (2001–2004) - On March 5, 2001, Khabibulin was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Mike Johnson, Paul Mara, Ruslan Zainullin and the New York Islanders' second-round choice (previously acquired; Phoenix selected Matthew Spiller). Khabibulin quickly signed a contract with Tampa Bay and by the next season, he re-emerged as a premier goaltender. At the 2002 NHL All-Star Game his flawless, 20-save third period allowed the World All-Stars to rally for a comeback 8–5 win. Though Éric Dazé of the Chicago Blackhawks was chosen as the All-Star MVP, Khabibulin's play was the talk of both locker rooms. Indeed, many players were surprised that Khabibulin wasn't named MVP, an honour they felt was deserved and obvious. MVP voting was allegedly conducted with about five minutes remaining in the game while the North American All-Stars still held the lead.

Chicago Blackhawks (2005–2009) - As the National Hockey League Players' Association ratified a new collective bargaining agreement, Khabibulin became a free agent when play was set to resume. Coming off his Stanley Cup win the previous NHL season, the Chicago Blackhawks signed him to a four-year, $27 million deal, making him the highest paid goaltender in the League. Injuries and inconsistent play, however, plagued him during his tenure in Chicago. In his first season with the Blackhawks, he recorded a 3.35 goals against average — the highest of his career since his rookie season in Winnipeg — and Chicago finished second-to-last in the Western Conference. In July 2008, the Blackhawks signed goaltender Cristobal Huet, previously of the Washington Capitals. The signing of Huet was thought to have effectively displaced Khabibulin as the starting goaltender, especially given he was put on waivers on September 29, 2008, but cleared. In light of Huet and Khabibulin's combined salaries (Huet was signed to a contract averaging $5.6 million per season), it was speculated Khabibulin would be traded to provide cap space. However, he spent the entire season with the team, playing in 42 games, and by the start of the 2009 playoffs, he had retrenched himself as starting goaltender. Khabibulin and the Blackhawks defeated the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks to progress to the Western Conference Finals against the Detroit Red Wings. During the third game of the series, Khabibulin surrendered three goals in one period after shutting out the Red Wings in the previous period. He was replaced by Huet for the third period due to a lower body injury. Khabibulin missed the remaining three games of the series as a result of the injury.

Edmonton Oilers (2009–2013) On July 1, 2009, Khabibulin signed a four-year, $15 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers, replacing Dwayne Roloson as the Oilers' starting goaltender.

Return to Chicago (2013–14) - On July 5, 2013, Khabibulin signed a one-year, $2 million contract to play for the Blackhawks for the 2013–14 season. It was his second stint with Chicago after previously playing for them from 2005 to 2009. He served as the backup goaltender to Corey Crawford. Khabibulin suffered an injury in a loss to the Nashville Predators on November 16, 2013, and was placed on injured reserve the next day. As a result, goaltender Antti Raanta was recalled from the Blackhawks' American Hockey league affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. He never played another game in the NHL after sustaining the hip injury. Khabibulin announced his intentions to retire on November 13, 2015. He has expressed an interest in continuing his hockey career in management.

It’s not often that I “surrender the waist” and wear something that hangs straight from my shoulders to hips. I skipped the belt today to make airport security simpler and give myself more comfort on the plane ride.

Security was a breeze. In fact, the agents weren’t requiring passengers to remove their shoes . . . unless there was metal in them, so I still had to take off my studded boots. On the plane, I was SO comfortable that I slept until Reno. (Well, let’s be honest. I fall asleep on the plane every time, no matter what I’m wearing.)

SURRENDER

All of us have always had a very difficult choice moment. A lot of doors that open new paths and new fates in front of us, depending on our election our future changes, sometimes a little some times radically. This photo represents human choices and their consequences. Talking about this, I strongly recommend watching "Mr. Nobody" a film that will make you think a little bit about the choices you've made in your life.
